Donkey teeth are built for a demanding job: the cheek teeth grind coarse, fibrous forage into particles small enough to swallow. Their mouths broadly resemble horses’ mouths, but eruption is usually later and several familiar horse-ageing clues are unreliable in donkeys. Teeth can suggest an age range, not prove an exact birthday.
Regular examinations by a veterinarian or qualified equine dental professional are the safest way to find disease early. Do not rasp, extract, or try to diagnose a donkey’s teeth at home.

What donkey teeth do
A donkey’s teeth begin the digestive process in the mouth. The incisors at the front grasp and cut forage; the premolars and molars along the cheeks then crush and grind it. The Donkey Sanctuary’s Clinical Companion of Donkey Dentistry describes the cheek teeth this way: “The cheek teeth are highly evolved to be a very efficient start to the digestive process, grinding rough, fibrous ingesta into particles for swallowing.”
That grinding function matters because donkeys commonly eat rough, high-fibre material. If a tooth is painful, loose, displaced, or overgrown, the donkey may not reduce food properly even when it appears to be eating. Poor chewing can affect body condition and welfare before an owner sees an obvious mouth injury.

Donkey and horse mouths are similar, not identical
Donkey dental anatomy is broadly comparable with horse anatomy, but it should not be treated as an exact copy. A 2008 post-mortem study examined 19 donkey skulls and 108 teeth from 14 of those skulls. It reported a greater difference between upper- and lower-jaw width in donkeys than in the horse comparison used in the paper: 27% in donkeys versus 23% in horses. That quantitative difference affects how teeth meet and wear, so a professional should assess a donkey as a donkey rather than apply a horse chart mechanically.
When do donkey teeth come in?
Donkey eruption follows the same broad sequence seen in horses and ponies, but permanent teeth commonly appear around six to eight months later. The interval is approximate, and breed differences mean an individual may not match a printed timetable.
| Tooth | Approximate eruption in donkeys | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Central deciduous incisors | Birth to 2 weeks | Reported timing from the Brooke’s Working Equid Veterinary Manual; an estimate, not a guarantee. |
| Middle deciduous incisors | About 8 weeks | Approximate eruption age. |
| Corner deciduous incisors | About 12 months | Approximate eruption age; breed variation is possible. |
| Permanent central incisors | 3–3.5 years | Reported eruption range for donkeys. |
| Permanent middle incisors | About 4 years | Approximate age when the permanent middle pair erupts. |
| Permanent corner incisors | 5–5.5 years | Approximate age; do not use it as an exact birthday marker. |
“Deciduous” means the first, temporary teeth. They are replaced by permanent teeth as the donkey matures. Eruption can be more useful for estimating age in a young animal because a tooth is either emerging or has not yet emerged. Once the permanent mouth is established, wear varies too much for a simple visual schedule to deliver a precise age.
Can you tell a donkey’s age by its teeth?
Only approximately. A veterinarian may combine eruption history, the appearance of several teeth, the donkey’s records, and the rest of its physical development to reach an educated estimate. Tooth appearance alone cannot reliably establish an exact age, especially in an adult with a complete permanent set.

Why traditional incisor clues fail
Several signs routinely used in horse ageing are particularly uncertain in donkeys. Research involving 63 donkeys and 106 mini-Shetland ponies found that deciduous and permanent incisor eruption occurred later than in horses. The same study found the disappearance of cups, clinical crown length, hooks on the upper corner incisors, and Galvayne’s groove unreliable for determining age in donkeys and mini-Shetlands.
These signs can still be part of a professional examination, but they should be presented as clues with a wide margin of error. A seller’s claim that a donkey is a particular age “because of the groove” is not a dependable substitute for documented history or veterinary assessment.
What an age estimate can and cannot tell you
- Young donkeys: Eruption of temporary and permanent incisors can narrow the likely age range, although breed and individual variation remain.
- Adults: Wear patterns may support a broad estimate but should not be treated as a precise number.
- Older donkeys: Missing, displaced, or heavily worn teeth can make visual ageing even less dependable and may themselves indicate disease.
How common are dental problems?
Dental disease becomes more common as donkeys age. In a UK cross-sectional study of 357 Donkey Sanctuary donkeys aged 2 to 53 years, 73% had dental disease. Prevalence was 28% in the youngest age group and 98% in the oldest. The largest significant increase for most disorders occurred in the 15–20-year age group.
Those figures describe the examined UK population, not every donkey worldwide. They are useful for showing the strong age relationship and the importance of continued checks, but they are not a universal prevalence rate for a farm, breed, or country.

| Disorder | Range reported across age groups in the UK study | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Diastemata | 3.8%–86% | Abnormally wide gaps between teeth, where food can become trapped. |
| Missing teeth | 0%–56% | Absent teeth, with prevalence rising in older groups. |
| Overgrown teeth | 15%–86% | Excess tooth growth that can interfere with normal chewing. |
| Worn teeth | 8%–84% | Tooth wear recorded at different rates across age groups. |
| Displaced teeth | 0%–38% | Teeth that do not sit in the expected alignment. |
| Periodontal disease | 0%–28% | Disease affecting the tissues that support teeth. |
The ranges above combine age groups in that study, so a range is not a prediction for an individual donkey. A donkey can have more than one disorder at the same time, and a normal-looking front tooth does not rule out a problem in the cheek teeth.
Signs that should prompt a professional assessment
Owners are often the first to notice a change in eating or general welfare. Arrange an examination if a donkey’s chewing or feeding pattern changes, if it struggles to handle forage, or if you have any concern that pain is affecting its condition or behaviour. Dental disease may be subtle, particularly in stoic animals, so waiting for complete loss of appetite is risky.
Useful observations to report include:
- taking longer to eat or leaving normally accepted forage;
- difficulty chewing or repeatedly dropping partially chewed food;
- loss of body condition despite access to feed;
- new resistance around the head or mouth;
- foul mouth odour, facial swelling, or discharge; and
- any change in comfort, demeanour, or ability to maintain normal welfare.
These observations are warning signs, not diagnoses. Similar changes can have non-dental causes, and only an appropriately trained professional can determine what is happening inside the mouth.

How donkey teeth should be checked
The Donkey Sanctuary’s public dental-care guidance identifies prevention as the key measure and recommends regular dental checks by a veterinarian or equine dental professional. The available guidance does not establish one examination interval that suits every donkey, so a professional should set the follow-up plan for the individual animal.

What a suitable provider should offer
If you are choosing between providers, look for the ability to assess the whole mouth and to obtain veterinary diagnosis or treatment when needed, rather than someone offering only a quick visual look or a stand-alone rasping service.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What qualification does the professional hold? | Dental procedures require appropriate training and legal authorization in the relevant jurisdiction. |
| How much donkey or working-equid experience do they have? | Donkey anatomy, behaviour, eruption timing, and disease patterns are not identical to those of horses. |
| Can they perform a complete oral examination? | Problems may occur in the cheek teeth or between teeth and may not be visible from the front. |
| What happens if disease is found? | The provider should have a clear route to veterinary diagnosis, pain management, treatment, or referral. |
| How will follow-up be arranged? | Older donkeys and animals with existing disease may need an individualized monitoring plan. |
Why home dentistry is unsafe
Do not rasp teeth, remove a tooth, probe a gap, or give a donkey a dental tool treatment yourself. Without a full examination, filing a visible sharp edge can miss the painful cause, damage healthy structures, or delay treatment. Extraction and other invasive procedures require professional assessment and appropriate veterinary care.

Home care is primarily observation and record-keeping. Keep a note of the donkey’s age or best-known history, appetite, body condition, and any changes in chewing. Tell the examining professional what forage and feed the donkey receives and when you first noticed a problem. Good records make it easier to distinguish a new change from a long-standing condition.

What the evidence means for different ages
Foals and young donkeys
In a young donkey, the main questions are whether teeth are erupting in a broadly expected sequence and whether eating is comfortable. The published eruption figures provide approximate landmarks, while breed variation and the documented delay compared with horses mean a single late-looking tooth is not automatically abnormal.
Adult donkeys
Once permanent incisors are established, do not rely on cups, crown length, hooks, or Galvayne’s groove to assign an exact age. Adult dental checks should focus on comfort, function, alignment, and disease rather than on producing a deceptively precise number.
Senior donkeys
The UK prevalence study found the highest disease burden in its oldest group, with most disorders increasing markedly in later life. Older donkeys therefore deserve continued professional monitoring even if they are still eating normally. A quiet reduction in chewing efficiency can be the first sign of a problem.
