They carry water, fuel, fodder, goods and people; pull carts and farm implements; and contribute to household income. Those practical roles can also create close human–animal relationships, but “guardian” and “companion” are not universal cultural categories. What a donkey means depends on the community, its economy and the conditions in which the animal works.
The clearest global evidence concerns work and welfare. Regional meanings require local evidence, such as the study of brick-kiln donkeys in Northern India. Understanding both parts—what donkeys do and the circumstances around that work—gives a more accurate picture than treating one tradition as representative of every culture.

What donkeys do in human societies
Working animals helped ancient cultures expand geographically, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) continues to describe working equids as contributors to traction, transport, agricultural production, food security and household needs. Donkeys are one part of that wider equid group, alongside horses and mules.

Working Animals International’s 2025 World Donkey Day overview estimates about 50 million donkeys worldwide and describes approximately 5,000 years of use as working animals. The figure is an estimate rather than a complete census. In practice, a donkey may support a family’s income, reduce the time needed to collect necessities or connect a household with markets and public services.

Donkey roles by setting and task
The same species can perform very different jobs. Workload, equipment, terrain and local resources determine both the value of the task and the risks to the animal.
| Setting or task | Typical contribution | What determines welfare |
|---|---|---|
| Pack transport | Carrying water, fodder, fuel, food and other goods along paths or roads | Load weight and balance, distance, heat, footing, rest and access to water |
| Cart transport | Moving people or bulk goods between homes, farms, markets and services | Harness fit, road safety, traffic, braking, hours worked and sheltered recovery time |
| Agricultural traction | Pulling implements or helping with cultivation and other farm work | Soil and slope, implement design, pulling effort, nutrition and seasonal workload |
| Construction and industry | Hauling materials, including in demanding environments such as brick production | Dust, heat, sharp surfaces, long shifts, supervision, injury prevention and veterinary access |
| Access to services | Taking people or supplies to health, education or trading facilities where other transport is limited | Safe routes, emergency readiness, reliable harnesses and the animal’s ability to recover after urgent trips |
Rural households may rely on donkeys for several of these functions at once. Urban and peri-urban animals can be part of commercial carting or waste and material transport, while industrial settings may expose them to heavier loads and more hazardous surfaces. A label such as “working donkey” therefore says little about the actual day unless the task and environment are specified.
How donkey work supports livelihoods and services
A donkey’s contribution is often indirect. Carrying water or fuel can free time for paid work, schooling or care responsibilities. Transporting farm products can make a market reachable, and moving fodder or tools can keep other livestock and crops productive. These benefits are particularly important where motor vehicles are unaffordable, roads are poor or fuel supplies are unreliable.

Working Animals International’s International Working Animal Day statement, published 15 June 2026, gives a specific example from Chivi district in southern Zimbabwe. Donkey owner Patience said: “When I was ready to give birth, I took the donkey cart and went all the way to the hospital. If someone is sick or injured, we can use the donkeys to get to the hospital.” This is firsthand evidence of service access in one community, not proof that every donkey-owning household has the same experience.
WOAH also links working equids with household needs and food security. The economic value is not limited to cash earned from the animal’s labor: dependable transport can lower costs, protect time and provide options during an emergency. Measuring those benefits requires local data, which is often incomplete.

Cultural meaning is local, not one global story
“Guardian” and “companion” can be useful prompts for asking how people relate to donkeys, but the available evidence does not establish a single worldwide tradition. A donkey may be treated as a partner in production, a household asset, a source of transport, an animal requiring protection or an individual with emotional value. Those descriptions can overlap, and they can change when a family migrates, changes jobs or gains access to motorized transport.
What the Northern India brick-kiln study shows
Watson and colleagues’ 2020 study of working donkeys in Northern Indian brick kilns is a case study of those relationships in context. It discusses how caste, ethnicity, inherited knowledge, gender, migration, religion, poverty and shared hardship influence the work and the decisions surrounding animal care. The point is not that every Indian community—or every brick kiln—works this way. Rather, welfare measures can fail when they ignore the social pressures and economic choices that shape a donkey owner’s options.

An effective program must understand who makes decisions, how knowledge is passed on, which hazards are unavoidable and what support is affordable. The study therefore informs intervention design; it does not provide a universal definition of donkeys as guardians or companions.
Why broad cultural claims are risky
Folklore, religious symbolism and companion-animal practices differ by region and community. Without a source specific to a named tradition, it is safer to describe the documented work and relationship than to attribute a belief to an entire country or faith. A respectful account identifies the people, place, period and activity involved, and distinguishes a participant’s testimony from a population-wide pattern.
Welfare determines the quality of the relationship
Whether a donkey is viewed as a partner or simply as transport, its experience depends on material conditions. WOAH’s working-equid guidance identifies the following welfare domains.

- Multiple Uses: this donkey animal toy is a nice gift choice on birthday, wedding and other festival days, and also an attractive decoration for bookcases, desks and rooms; You can even use it as cake toppers to make a woodland animal themed cake
Food and water
Animals need sufficient, appropriate feed and regular access to clean water. A donkey carrying loads, pulling a cart or working in heat may need more frequent opportunities to drink and recover than an animal at rest. Resource scarcity can affect both the household and the donkey, so solutions should address availability as well as owner knowledge.
Housing and rest
Shelter should protect the donkey from weather, allow it to lie down and stand safely, and reduce exposure to hazards. Rest periods must match workload, terrain and temperature. Keeping an animal tied or confined in a dangerous area can create welfare problems even when its daily ration is adequate.
Injury and disease management
Harnesses, carts, loads and footing can cause wounds or lameness. Early recognition, basic wound care and access to qualified veterinary or farrier services can prevent a manageable problem from becoming disabling. WOAH includes disease and injury management among the core welfare responsibilities for working equids.
Handling and work practices
Handlers need equipment that fits, routes that are as safe as circumstances allow and methods that do not cause avoidable fear or pain. Work should be adjusted when an animal is sick, injured, severely underconditioned or unable to cope with the environment. In industrial settings, dust, heat, traffic and sharp debris require particular attention.
End-of-life and slaughter
WOAH’s standards also address slaughter. Humane handling does not stop when a donkey can no longer work; transport, restraint and killing should minimize suffering and follow applicable veterinary and legal requirements.

A practical welfare assessment
Anyone evaluating a donkey program, household or workplace can use the same questions without ranking one culture above another:
- Workload: What does the donkey carry or pull, for how many hours, over what distance and on what terrain?
- Equipment: Are harnesses, packs and carts fitted and maintained, with loads balanced and secured?
- Environment: Are heat, cold, dust, traffic, steep ground, sharp surfaces or contaminated water creating hazards?
- Recovery: Does the animal receive meaningful rest, shade or shelter and enough time to eat and drink?
- Body condition: Is feed sufficient for the work, and are there visible signs of weight loss, dehydration, lameness or exhaustion?
- Health care: Can the owner obtain timely veterinary, dental and hoof-care help, including treatment for wounds?
- Decision constraints: Do poverty, migration, gender roles, inherited practices or lack of services limit the choices available?
The final question is essential. Advising an owner to “work less” or “visit a clinic” is not a complete intervention if there is no alternative transport, no nearby professional or no money for treatment. Practical support might combine training, affordable care, safer equipment, rest arrangements and referral pathways.

Different organizations count different things. A donkey-only estimate cannot be compared directly with a total for all equines or all working animals.
| Figure | Scope and attribution | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 50 million donkeys | Working Animals International, World Donkey Day page (2025) | Estimated worldwide donkey population; not a precise census |
| 116 million equines | Brooke report summarized by FAO (2022) | Donkeys, horses and mules combined; includes about 36 million in 38 lowest-income countries |
| 263,000-plus donkeys treated in 2024 | Working Animals International (2025 page) | A charity-reported service total, not a population estimate |
| Estimated 76% decline in China’s donkey population since 1992 | WOAH article (6 May 2022) | Country- and period-specific estimate reported by WOAH |
| About 200 million working horses, donkeys and mules | Working Animals International (2026), attributing a 2021 World Horse Welfare and The Donkey Sanctuary report | Broad working-equid estimate, not a donkey count |
FAO and Brooke have emphasized that population data are incomplete. The safest interpretation is to use each number for the scope it actually measures, rather than turning a broad equine total into a claim about donkeys alone.
Donkey-skin trade and other contemporary pressures
In its 6 May 2022 article, WOAH linked rising demand for donkey skins used to make gelatin products for medicinal and beauty markets with pressure on donkey populations. The article cites higher prices, theft and illegal trade, with China and Nigeria among the country examples discussed. Those are findings from WOAH’s 2022 account, not a substitute for a newer country-by-country assessment.

Trade pressure can affect welfare and livelihoods simultaneously. When prices rise, owners may face incentives to sell animals they depend on, while theft removes transport and income from households. Responses therefore need both enforcement and support for owners, along with reliable population monitoring. A statistic about declining numbers does not by itself show why animals disappeared or what policy will work locally.
Supporting donkeys responsibly
For an individual owner or community program, qualified veterinary and farrier advice should guide hoof treatment, wound care, parasite control, nutrition and decisions about workload. Basic tools such as hoof-care equipment or an equine grooming kit can be useful only when users know how to apply them safely; equipment is not a replacement for professional diagnosis.
Charitable programs may offer veterinary treatment, wound dressings, bandages, farrier care or hoof treatment. Before donating or organizing support, check what services are currently available, who delivers them and whether the program works with local owners rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all model.
The practical conclusion
Donkeys are best understood as adaptable working partners whose importance is measured in tasks and relationships: carrying essentials, pulling loads, supporting farms, earning income and sometimes making a journey to medical care possible. Cultural meanings are real but local, and the Northern India brick-kiln study demonstrates why social context matters without speaking for the world. Treating every donkey as a universal guardian or companion obscures the conditions that determine its welfare. A better approach is specific: identify the animal’s job, listen to the people involved, measure the risks and provide care that fits their circumstances.
