The Donskoy is a social, energetic Russian cat distinguished by a hairless-to-sparsely coated appearance, not by one fixed look. Some are born bald, while others have a soft flocked coat, a velour coat that thins with age, or a brush coat that keeps more hair. TICA traces the breed to Rostov-on-Don in 1987.
This is an affectionate companion for a household that can provide daily interaction and regular skin care. Hairless individuals need oil removal, sensible protection from sun and cold, and routine veterinary oversight. The breed is not proven hypoallergenic, and current veterinary references do not establish a breed-wide rate for inherited disease.

What is a Donskoy cat?
The Donskoy, also called the Don Sphynx in some historical accounts, is a medium-sized, sturdy cat from Russia. TICA’s breed history says the foundation cat was found in Rostov-on-Don in 1987. Elena Kovaleva rescued and named the cat Varvara; when Varvara later produced kittens that also lost their coats, breeder Irina Nemikina developed the breed that TICA registers as the Donskoy. That account is TICA’s documented breed history rather than an independently verified archival reconstruction.

Hairlessness is the most recognizable feature, but it is not universal. Coat expression can change as a kitten matures, so the appearance at a few weeks or months is not a guarantee of the adult coat. The breed’s skin is often wrinkled, and TICA’s standard describes a warm, soft feel. Its wording is: “The Donskoy is a very intriguing, unique, soft-hearted and social cat of medium size with soft hairless wrinkled skin that feels hot and velvety to the touch.”

TICA lists a life expectancy of 12–15+ years. The profile does not identify a study or population behind that figure, so treat it as TICA’s estimate, not a measured average for every Donskoy.
Donskoy coat types and appearance
TICA recognizes four coat categories. A kitten can move from one category toward another as it grows, particularly in the velour and brush types. Discuss the parents’ coats and previous litters with a breeder, but avoid promises about a kitten’s final appearance.
| Coat type | What you may see | Showing and breeding notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber bald (born bald) | Little or no hair from birth; the skin can look strongly wrinkled. | One of the recognized Donskoy coat expressions. |
| Flocked | A very fine covering with a chamois-like texture. From a distance, the cat may look hairless. | Texture and coverage can be subtle and vary with age. |
| Velour | Often starts with a bald spot; much of the coat may disappear as the cat matures. | Adult appearance is especially difficult to predict from a young kitten. |
| Brush | More hair remains, although bald areas can occur. | Admissible for breeding under the TICA standard, but not for showing. |
The Donskoy is generally described as medium in size and solidly built, with the distinctive wrinkled skin associated with the breed. A brush or flocked Donskoy may look very different from a rubber-bald individual while still belonging to the same breed. Hairless does not mean maintenance-free: skin oils that would normally collect on a coat remain on the skin and require a routine.

Temperament and life at home
TICA characterizes Donskoys as friendly, affectionate, intelligent, playful and sociable. They tend to seek company from people and other cats and are inquisitive about their surroundings. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees; early socialization, health, previous handling and the individual cat’s personality still matter.
Companionship needs
A Donskoy is a poor match for a home where a cat will routinely be left without interaction for long stretches. Plan for regular play, conversation and shared time. If everyone works or studies away from home, enrichment and a compatible animal companion may help, but neither replaces assessing the individual cats’ temperaments and making gradual introductions.
Activity and enrichment
Active Donskoys benefit from smart, interactive toys, a scratching post and opportunities to investigate safe parts of the home. Rotate toys so that play remains interesting, and use short sessions throughout the day rather than expecting one long workout. Secure windows, balconies and other escape routes before allowing an inquisitive cat to explore.

Questions to ask before choosing one
- Will someone provide daily social time and interactive play?
- Can the household maintain wiping, bathing and nail, ear and dental care?
- Is there a warm indoor environment in winter and a plan to limit intense sun?
- Can the family budget for routine veterinary visits and prompt treatment of skin or eye changes?
- Are all residents comfortable with a cat whose skin may feel warm and whose coat may change over time?
How Donskoy care differs from the image of a “low-grooming” cat
Less fur does not remove grooming; it changes the work from brushing hair to caring for skin. TICA’s general guidance is a starting point, not a rigid prescription. A veterinarian can adjust frequency for the cat’s skin, climate, age and any medical problem.
Skin routine
- Wipe hairless skin regularly. TICA advises daily wiping for hairless Donskoys to remove accumulated oils. Use a cat-suitable product and stop if the skin becomes red or irritated.
- Bathe on a recurring schedule. TICA gives once a week to twice a month as general guidance. The correct interval depends on oil production and veterinary advice; over-bathing can also irritate skin.
- Check folds and friction points. During wiping or bathing, look for persistent redness, odor, scaling, sores or painful areas. Arrange a veterinary examination instead of trying to mask a problem with cosmetics.
Sun and temperature protection
TICA notes that Donskoys can sweat through the skin and tan with sun exposure, and it warns about sunburn. Ask a veterinarian whether sunscreen is appropriate and which formulation is safe for your cat; do not apply a human product or assume that any pet sunscreen is suitable. Limit prolonged direct sun with shade, indoor access and sensible window management.
A fine winter coat may not provide adequate insulation in cold weather. Keep the cat indoors, provide a warm resting area and watch for shivering, lethargy or cold ears and paws. Clothing should never be used as a substitute for a warm environment, and any garment must fit safely and be tolerated by the individual cat.

- Provide fresh water every day.
- Keep vaccinations and parasite prevention current, as TICA recommends for the breed.
Health: what is established and what remains uncertain
TICA describes the Donskoy as an overall healthy breed while advising owners to monitor skin, sunburn and routine preventive care. That broad profile is not a guarantee for an individual cat and cannot replace a physical examination, documented medical history or appropriate testing.
Limited breed-specific evidence
FREGIS Veterinary Hospital reports that scientific literature on the Donskoy’s principal diseases and possible predispositions is lacking because the breed remains rare. It describes the hairlessness mutation as inherited through autosomal semi-dominant transmission and says no pleiotropy is described in its profile. A lack of published prevalence data should be read as uncertainty, not proof that inherited problems do not occur.
HPS5 and the pink-eye phenotype
The University of Montreal Veterinary Genetics Laboratory reports an HPS5 mutation associated with oculocutaneous albinism in Donskoys. Reported features include hypopigmentation and a “pink-eye” phenotype. The laboratory links the finding to a particular inbred pedigree and explicitly says the mutation’s frequency in the general Donskoy population has not been characterized. The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine lists Donskoy, HPS5 and pink-eye among conditions to monitor.

These reports justify asking informed questions, not labeling every Donskoy as affected. A test result applies to the variant and sample tested; it does not guarantee that a cat is free of every genetic or acquired disease.
What to request from a breeder
- Veterinary records for the kitten and both parents, including vaccination and parasite-treatment history.
- Any genetic testing relevant to the family line, with the laboratory report rather than a verbal summary.
- An explanation of what each test detects, its limitations and whether the result is appropriate for the Donskoy’s pedigree.
- Permission for your veterinarian to examine the kitten during the return or health-guarantee period specified in the contract.
- Disclosure of previous eye, skin or other medical findings in related cats.
Take the records to your own veterinarian soon after adoption. Seek prompt advice for squinting, unusual eye color changes, persistent discharge, severe sunburn, non-healing skin lesions, marked itching or any sudden change in behavior.
Comparing a Donskoy with other hairless cats
Names such as Sphynx and Peterbald are often raised in the same conversation, but they are separate breeds. The available veterinary references do not support a blanket claim that Donskoys are healthier or less healthy than either. A useful comparison focuses on the individual cat and the practical commitments below.

| Decision point | What to establish for a Donskoy | Why it matters when comparing breeds |
|---|---|---|
| Coat outcome | Which of the four coat types the kitten has now, and how related cats matured. | Hairlessness and grooming workload can vary within a breed and between individuals. |
| Skin and sun care | Daily wiping and bathing expectations, plus a veterinarian-approved sun plan. | Every hairless or sparsely coated cat still needs a realistic skin-care routine. |
| Social needs | Evidence that the individual cat enjoys handling, play and other animals. | Breed descriptions are tendencies; the cat’s observed temperament is decisive. |
| Health documentation | Parent and kitten records, lineage-relevant testing and a veterinary examination. | No breed label substitutes for records and an assessment of the particular cat. |
Is a Donskoy the right cat for you?
Choose a Donskoy if you want an interactive companion, enjoy an involved relationship with your cat and can maintain skin care throughout the year. The breed can suit families who plan play and handling respectfully, keep the home temperature comfortable and protect exposed skin from excessive sun.
Reconsider if you need a cat that can be left alone most days, if recurring wiping and bathing are impractical, or if you expect hairlessness to eliminate allergies or grooming. No source establishes Donskoys as hypoallergenic, and skin oils, saliva and household allergens are not removed simply because a cat has little visible fur.
Before bringing a Donskoy home
- Visit the breeder or rescue setting and observe how the cat responds to handling, noise and unfamiliar people.
- Confirm the coat type and discuss how the parents’ coats changed with age.
- Read veterinary and genetic records yourself; ask follow-up questions about any abnormal eye, skin or pigment finding.
- Book a first examination with a veterinarian experienced in cats and bring all records.
- Prepare a warm indoor resting area, shade from strong sun, a scratching post, interactive toys, grooming supplies and fresh water.
- Agree on a daily care schedule so wiping, play and monitoring do not depend on one person being available.
With those preparations, the Donskoy’s unusual appearance is only one part of the decision. Its social character, changing coat and recurring skin-care needs are the traits that shape everyday life together.
