A Doxiepoo is a Dachshund–Poodle mix, also called a Doxiedoodle. It can be affectionate, clever, lively, and entertaining—but it is not a standardized breed with predictable adult traits. The Dachshund parent may be miniature or standard, while the Poodle parent may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard. That means two Doxiepoos can differ substantially in size, coat, energy level, trainability, and body shape.
The right way to evaluate a Doxiepoo is to look at the individual dog and the exact varieties, health history, and temperaments of its parents. The “doodle” name does not guarantee a curly coat, low shedding, easy training, or freedom from inherited disease.

What is a Doxiepoo?
A Doxiepoo is produced by crossing a Dachshund with a Poodle. The name is used for a mixed-breed dog rather than a breed with an agreed-upon size, appearance, or temperament. Some breeders use miniature or toy parents to produce smaller puppies, but a standard Dachshund or Standard Poodle can also be involved.
Because the parents can come from different size varieties, there is no reliable official “Doxiepoo size.” A puppy’s adult appearance cannot be predicted precisely from the label, and even puppies from the same litter may mature differently.

Size and appearance
Size depends heavily on the parents. Standard Dachshunds generally weigh 16–32 pounds, while miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less. Toy Poodles stand under 10 inches, Miniature Poodles measure 10–15 inches, and Standard Poodles are over 15 inches. Their typical weights range from approximately 4–6 pounds for Toys, 10–15 pounds for Miniatures, and 40–70 pounds for Standards.
Most Doxiepoos encountered as companion dogs are bred from miniature or toy varieties, but that is not a rule. Ask for the parents’ actual measurements and pedigrees rather than relying on terms such as “toy,” “mini,” or “small.”
Possible Doxiepoo features include:
- A long or moderately elongated body
- Short, medium-length, or relatively long legs
- Drop ears
- A narrow Dachshund-like head or a finer Poodle-like head
- A smooth, long, wiry, wavy, or curly coat
- Coat colors inherited from either parent
The puppy’s coat and proportions may change considerably as it grows. A fluffy puppy is not necessarily going to develop a dense, curly adult coat, and a puppy with longer legs is not automatically protected from Dachshund-related back problems.
Coat, shedding, and grooming
Some Doxiepoos shed lightly, while others shed moderately. A Poodle parent does not guarantee a nonshedding or allergy-friendly dog. Poodles shed minimally, but Dachshunds are moderate shedders and are not considered hypoallergenic. A Doxiepoo may inherit either coat type—or something between them.
Grooming requirements depend on the coat:
| Coat type | Likely care |
|---|---|
| Smooth | Usually the simplest coat, with regular brushing and occasional bathing |
| Long or feathered | Frequent brushing to control tangles, especially around the ears and legs |
| Wiry | Regular brushing and coat care; the exact technique depends on texture |
| Wavy or curly | Brushing down to the skin to prevent hidden mats, plus regular clipping |
A long, dense, curly coat may need daily brushing. Professional grooming is often scheduled every four to eight weeks when the coat is clipped, although the appropriate interval depends on coat length and the owner’s brushing routine.
Plan for regular nail trims, toothbrushing, ear checks, and bathing when needed. Do not wait until a matted coat, overgrown nails, or an ear odor becomes obvious. If you are considering a Doxiepoo because of allergies, spend time with the specific dog first. No mixed-breed dog can be guaranteed hypoallergenic.
Doxiepoo temperament
The Doxiepoo can inherit two contrasting working backgrounds. Dachshunds were developed to hunt independently and may be bold, persistent, vocal, prey-driven, and unwilling to give up when interested in a scent. Poodles are highly intelligent, active, people-oriented dogs that often respond well to training.
A Doxiepoo may therefore be affectionate and eager to interact but also noisy, distractible, or selective about following instructions. Commonly reported tendencies include:
- Strong attachment to family members
- Alert barking
- Playfulness and curiosity
- Intelligence and a capacity for tricks
- Independence or stubbornness
- Interest in chasing small animals
These are possibilities, not guarantees. Genetics, early socialization, training, health, and the home environment all affect behavior. A Doxiepoo may live successfully with children or other pets, but introductions and supervision matter. Children should be taught not to grab, climb on, or roughly handle the dog, particularly if the dog has a long back or dislikes restraint. A strong prey drive may also make life with cats, rabbits, rodents, or birds more complicated.
Training and socialization
Doxiepoos can learn quickly, but intelligence does not always mean cooperation. A dog that understands a cue may still decide that following a scent, barking at a noise, or chasing movement is more rewarding.

- ≡ FIT / NO CHOKE ≡ The dog harness is designed with 4 adjustable webbings, which can be adjusted according to the size of the dog's body to get a perfect fit. It makes the dog's chest evenly stressed and prevents dogs from choking effectively
- ≡ SAFETY DETAILS ≡ High-bright reflective strips are embedded in both the dog harness and leash. It can help the dog be seen clearly even at night. The neck buckle is designed with a lockable button, which can prevent the dog from breaking away accidentally
- Start early. Introduce the puppy gradually to people, calm dogs, household sounds, grooming, different surfaces, and appropriate handling.
- Use rewards. Food, toys, praise, and access to interesting activities are more productive than harsh corrections.
- Keep sessions short. Several brief sessions are usually more effective than one long, repetitive lesson.
- Practice in different places. A reliable “sit” in the kitchen does not automatically transfer to a park.
- Build recall carefully. Use a long line in safe areas until the dog can respond despite scents and distractions.
- Make grooming part of training. Teach the dog to accept brushing, paw handling, ear checks, and clipping before these tasks become necessary.
Harsh punishment can increase fear, defensive behavior, or avoidance. Reward-based training is a safer approach for a mix that may already be sensitive, independent, or easily aroused.

There is no scientifically established daily exercise quota for Doxiepoos. Needs depend on adult size, age, health, leg length, body condition, and which parent the dog resembles.
Many will do well with regular leash walks, supervised play, and daily mental work. Useful activities include:
- Scent games and scatter feeding
- Food puzzles and stuffed enrichment toys
- Trick training
- Fetch adapted to the dog’s body and fitness
- Short obedience or rally-style exercises
- Supervised play with suitable dogs
Dachshunds generally benefit from two moderate daily walks and activity that maintains muscle tone. Poodles are active dogs that need physical and mental stimulation. A small Doxiepoo should not automatically be treated as a low-energy lapdog. At the same time, a short-legged or back-sensitive dog should not be pushed into repetitive jumping, strenuous running, or high-impact games.
Back and spinal health
Intervertebral disc disease, or IVDD, is one of the most important concerns to discuss before getting a Doxiepoo. Dachshunds are among the breeds commonly affected by disc degeneration, and a disc herniation can cause sudden pain, weakness, poor coordination, or paralysis.

Being mixed-breed does not eliminate this risk. A Doxiepoo with longer legs is not automatically safe, either. Risk is influenced by inherited structure, body condition, genetics, age, and other factors. There is also no sound basis for claiming that crossing a Dachshund with a Poodle prevents back disease.
Practical steps include:
- Keep the dog lean rather than merely “within the normal weight range.”
- Provide regular, moderate exercise to support muscle tone.
- Use nonslip flooring in areas where the dog struggles for traction.
- Teach controlled movement around furniture and stairs.
- Reduce repeated high-impact jumping where practical.
These precautions do not mean every stair or jump causes IVDD. A dog should not be confined so severely that it loses fitness, and management should be tailored with a veterinarian.
Seek prompt veterinary care for sudden back or neck pain, reluctance to move, weakness, an unsteady gait, dragging limbs, loss of coordination, or paralysis. Continuing normal activity after spinal symptoms begin can worsen the outcome.
Other possible health concerns
There are no robust breed-wide prevalence figures for Doxiepoos because they do not have a uniform breeding population or established health registry. Consider health risks from both parent breeds rather than assuming that a cross is automatically healthier.

Potential concerns include:
- IVDD and other back problems
- Obesity
- Patellar luxation
- Dental disease
- Ear infections
- Eye disease
- Cardiac conditions
- Inherited disorders associated with the Dachshund or Poodle parent
Screening should match the varieties used. Recommended Poodle testing can include eye, patellar, hip, DNA, thyroid, cardiac, or sebaceous adenitis evaluations, depending on whether the parent is Toy, Miniature, or Standard. Dachshund screening recommendations include patella, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations.

A DNA panel is useful for some inherited conditions, but it is not a substitute for orthopedic, eye, or cardiac examinations.
Feeding and weight control
There is no correct universal amount such as “one and a half to two cups per day” for every Doxiepoo. Food portions depend on the dog’s ideal weight, age, activity, reproductive status, health, and the calorie density of the food.
- Use the food label as a starting point, not a final prescription.
- Measure meals with a kitchen scale or consistent measuring cup.
- Check body condition regularly; ribs should be palpable without a thick fat covering.
- Count chews, training treats, table food, and food used in enrichment toys.
- Keep extras to no more than about 10% of daily calories unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.
- Adjust portions when weight or activity changes.
Scheduled meals are generally preferable to free-feeding, especially for a Doxiepoo that gains weight easily. Excess weight puts additional strain on a long or structurally vulnerable back.

Dental care
Small dogs can be prone to crowded teeth and dental disease. Daily toothbrushing is the most useful home-care habit. Introduce it gradually with a pet toothpaste and a soft brush or finger brush.
Dental chews and dental diets may help reduce buildup, but they do not replace veterinary examinations or professional treatment. Bad breath, red gums, bleeding, loose teeth, difficulty chewing, or dropping food warrants a veterinary check.

A definitive Doxiepoo lifespan has not been established through a recognized registry or strong breed-wide study. For context, the AKC gives Dachshunds a life expectancy of 12–16 years and Poodles 10–18 years, but those parent-breed figures cannot be converted into a guaranteed lifespan for their mixed offspring.
Good nutrition, a lean body condition, dental care, preventive veterinary visits, appropriate exercise, and responsible breeding all help support a longer and healthier life.

Evaluate the parents and the breeding practices—not just the puppy’s color, size, or “doodle” label. Before leaving a deposit, ask for:
- The registered names or permanent identification of both parents.
- The exact Dachshund and Poodle varieties used.
- Verifiable orthopedic, eye, cardiac, and DNA results appropriate for those varieties.
- The puppy’s veterinary examination and vaccination records.
- A written contract and return policy.
- Details about how the puppies experience handling, grooming, household sounds, surfaces, and visitors.
- An opportunity to meet the mother and observe the puppies’ behavior.
The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals can record evaluations for dogs that are not purebred or registered, so mixed-breed status is not a reason to dismiss documented health results.
Be cautious of sellers promising a “guaranteed nonshedding,” “hypoallergenic,” or “genetically perfect” Doxiepoo. Claims that the mix is automatically healthier, immune to IVDD, or predictable in size are not supported by the absence of a purebred pedigree.

Is a Doxiepoo right for you?
A Doxiepoo may suit someone who wants a small-to-medium companion with a lively personality and is prepared for training, grooming, barking, and individual variation. It may be a poor choice for a household seeking a guaranteed low-shedding dog, a completely quiet companion, or a dog that can safely tolerate rough play and unrestricted jumping.

FAQ
Are Doxiepoos recognized by the AKC?
No. A Doxiepoo is a Dachshund–Poodle mix and is not an AKC-recognized breed. It has no universally accepted standard for size, coat, appearance, or temperament.
How big will a Doxiepoo get?
Adult size is unpredictable because Dachshunds may be standard or miniature and Poodles may be Toy, Miniature, or Standard. Ask about the actual parents rather than relying on an advertised average.
Do Doxiepoos shed?
They may shed lightly, moderately, or somewhere in between. A Poodle parent does not guarantee a nonshedding coat, and Doxiepoos should not be marketed as reliably hypoallergenic.
Are Doxiepoos easy to train?
They can be intelligent and quick to learn, but the Dachshund side may contribute independence, stubbornness, prey drive, and barking. Short, consistent, reward-based sessions usually work best.
Are Doxiepoos prone to back problems?
They may be. The Dachshund parent introduces a risk of IVDD and other spinal problems. Keeping the dog lean and fit can help, but crossing with a Poodle does not eliminate inherited back risk.
How much should a Doxiepoo eat?
There is no fixed portion for the mix. Feed according to ideal body weight, age, activity, health, and the food’s calorie density, then adjust using body-condition assessments and veterinary advice.
Are Doxiepoos good family dogs?
Some are affectionate and playful with families, but individual temperament varies. Children must be supervised and taught gentle handling, and prey drive may affect compatibility with small pets.

The Doxiepoo is a variable Dachshund–Poodle mix, not a predictable standardized breed. It may be bright, loving, playful, vocal, and rewarding to train, but prospective owners should also prepare for coat variation, possible shedding, independence, weight gain, and Dachshund-related spinal risk. Choose based on the individual dog, the exact parent varieties, documented health testing, and the breeder’s practices—not on promises attached to the name.
