Why Dozer was declared a dangerous dog
Dozer is the Weller family’s golden Labrador in Geraldton, Western Australia. In August 2025, the City of Greater Geraldton declared him a dangerous dog after receiving a report about an alleged incident involving a woman walking her German shepherd. The family disputed the account and said it had not been given details or supporting evidence. The available reporting does not establish the alleged incident as a tribunal finding. What the August evidence order did—and did not—decide
After the family appealed, a directions hearing took place in August. PerthNow reported Jill Weller’s account that the tribunal ordered the City to provide evidence by 5 September, with a further hearing listed for 12 September. That account describes a procedural direction, not a tribunal decision on whether the alleged incident happened or whether the declaration should stand. The report was not the tribunal’s written order. PerthNow’s August report also quoted Weller saying Dozer would not be euthanised regardless of the appeal outcome.

The family said it had not been given the details or supporting evidence behind the declaration. In September, ABC reported that the City planned to submit video evidence and call witnesses. The family had submitted a behavioural assessment and statements from people who knew Dozer. These were the parties’ reported positions during the appeal, not findings reached after a contested hearing. ABC News’ September report also said the family had relocated to Wyndham and the City continued pursuing the matter at that point.

What happened to the dangerous-dog declaration
The dispute ended in November. ABC reported that the tribunal revoked the declaration with the City’s consent. Under the reported agreement, the owners undertook to have Dozer complete ten training sessions at a local training centre by the end of the year. The centre was to provide written confirmation and observations, and the owners had to ensure Dozer was kept in accordance with the Dog Act 1976. ABC News reported the revocation on 21 November.
The Geraldton Guardian likewise reported that the City revoked the declaration after reaching an agreement with Weller, the proceedings were withdrawn, and planned final hearing dates were vacated. The reported outcome was a resolution by agreement, not a published contested judgment deciding whether Dozer committed the alleged attack. Was Dozer going to be put down?
PerthNow reported Weller’s post-directions-hearing assurance that she had received confirmation through the process that Dozer would not be euthanised. ABC later reported that the City denied any suggestion it intended to put him down, and that Dozer was returned to the family later in August after they built a fence. The owner’s earlier fear and the City’s denial are distinct reported accounts; the August evidence direction itself was not an euthanasia decision. ABC News reported the return and the City’s response.
What the original declaration required
Contemporaneous reports described conditions attached to the original dangerous-dog declaration, including secure confinement and use of a muzzle when Dozer was outside the enclosure. PerthNow also described a dangerous-dog collar, warning signs, fencing and inspections among the conditions the family had been told applied. These reports concern the declaration during the dispute; they are not current requirements for Dozer after the City revoked it. ABC’s September account and PerthNow’s August account described the conditions and the family’s account at those points in the case.
