Perth Zoo’s last elephant, Putra Mas, arrived at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia on 5 November 2025. Monarto reported that he travelled about 2,700 kilometres by road in roughly 42 hours, accompanied by keepers and veterinarians. His transfer completed Perth Zoo’s departure from keeping elephants.
How did Putra Mas get to Monarto?
Putra Mas, a 35-year-old male Asian elephant at the time of arrival, travelled from Perth Zoo to Monarto Safari Park in a custom-built transport crate. Monarto reported the journey as approximately 2,700 kilometres and about 42 hours on the road. Keepers and veterinarians accompanied him. After the crate was craned into the habitat, Monarto said, Putra Mas walked calmly into the barn. Monarto Safari Park’s arrival account describes the transfer.

Perth Zoo says Putra Mas was trained to enter his crate voluntarily, using food and encouragement so it could become a familiar, safe space. The zoo’s account describes the crate as insulated and air-conditioned, with a temperature gauge and cameras; it also says the elephants wore tethers during transit. These transport details are Perth Zoo’s account of its preparation and procedures.
What is known about the border crossing?
The published account establishes the journey’s origin, destination, reported distance and approximate duration, but it does not give an exact time or place for crossing from Western Australia into South Australia. Nor does it provide a fully verified road itinerary or list of stops. The journey took place by road; a more detailed route or a dramatic border-crossing scene is not documented in the cited arrival account.

Why did Perth Zoo move its elephants?
Perth Zoo says it announced in 2018, following the death of its matriarch Tricia, that its elephants would move on because the inner-city site did not have space for a full herd. Tricia died in 2022, aged 65, leaving Permai and Putra Mas at the zoo. Monarto’s stated aim in bringing elephants from regional zoos together was to give animals that had lived alone or in pairs more opportunities for social interaction.
Those are the zoos’ stated reasons for the moves, not an independent finding that relocation produced a particular long-term welfare outcome for Putra Mas. The reported calm walk into the barn describes his arrival, not a measured assessment of his welfare over time.

How the Monarto herd came together
Putra Mas joined four elephants who had already arrived at Monarto’s new habitat. The dated chronology and program updates show that establishing social groups was a gradual process rather than an immediate move into one fully integrated herd.
| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| November 2024 | Burma arrived from Auckland Zoo as the first elephant at Monarto’s new habitat. |
| January 2025 | Permai moved from Perth Zoo to Monarto. |
| April 2025 | Pak Boon and Tang Mo arrived from Taronga Zoo Sydney. |
| 5 November 2025 | Putra Mas arrived from Perth Zoo, completing Perth Zoo’s departure from keeping elephants. |
| 25 February 2026 | Monarto reported that Permai and Tang Mo had shared habitat without barriers; Burma and Pak Boon were still progressing through protected introductions. |
Monarto’s February 2026 update is a snapshot of progress at that date, not a guarantee of current groupings. Its FAQ described a founding herd of five—Burma, Permai, Pak Boon, Tang Mo and Putra Mas—and said breeding was not then being explored. The stated priority was helping the elephants settle and supporting a cohesive herd, with future decisions deferred to the regional species-management program. That was a dated policy statement, not a commitment about future plans.
