He was later diagnosed with pituitary dwarfism, a rare inherited endocrine disorder—not a miniature German Shepherd variety. Chance’s account raises legitimate welfare questions, but one rescue story cannot establish how common the disorder is or prove that a particular commercial breeder caused it.
What happened to Chance?
The ASPCA’s account says Chance was born at a commercial breeding facility and transported with other puppies. On January 24, 2017, the van crashed in Avoca, New York. Chance was rescued after the crash and later diagnosed with pituitary dwarfism. The ASPCA presents his experience within a broader criticism of commercial breeding practices and calls him a victim of a “cruel breeding industry.”

Those are the documented facts of the individual narrative. The story does not provide a population survey, a comparison with dogs from other sources, or evidence tracing Chance’s mutation to a specific breeding decision. It is therefore useful for understanding one dog’s experience and the welfare concerns surrounding puppy production, but it cannot by itself measure prevalence or establish industry-wide causation.

What is pituitary dwarfism in a German Shepherd?
Pituitary dwarfism is a medical endocrinopathy in which a dog’s pituitary system does not support normal juvenile growth. It should not be confused with intentionally producing a smaller “mini” German Shepherd. Affected dogs may begin life looking much like their littermates, then develop a distinctive pattern of slowed growth and other clinical changes as they mature.

Merck Veterinary Manual notes: “Juvenile-onset panhypopituitarism occurs most frequently in German Shepherd Dogs.” The term juvenile-onset panhypopituitarism describes a disorder beginning during development in which the pituitary gland fails to provide a normal range of hormones. The visible result can be disproportionate growth, but the condition is more than a body-size difference; it is a veterinary disease requiring assessment.
In the German Shepherd research, pituitary dwarfism is associated with a mutation in the LHX3 gene. The condition is described as autosomal recessive. That inheritance pattern matters: a dog can carry one altered copy without showing the disease, while a puppy that inherits the relevant altered copies from both parents may be affected. The presence of a carrier in a lineage is not proof that a breeder intentionally produced an affected puppy, and a dog’s appearance cannot identify carrier status.
Is pituitary dwarfism inherited?
Yes. The peer-reviewed German Shepherd study links the disorder to an autosomal recessive LHX3 mutation and reports that a genetic test can identify carriers. A carrier test is useful for understanding breeding-line risk, but it is not the same as diagnosing every short or slow-growing puppy. A veterinarian or qualified genetic service must interpret a result in the context of the dog’s clinical history and the test’s specifications.

Recessive inheritance also explains why unaffected parents can produce an affected puppy: parents may carry one altered copy while appearing healthy. Conversely, a dog from a commercial facility is not automatically affected, and a dog from a small or home breeding program is not automatically free of inherited disease. Responsible breeding decisions require verified parentage, an appropriate test where available, and veterinary or genetic counseling rather than assumptions based on the seller’s label.
What signs can owners notice?
Merck’s clinical reference explains that affected puppies can initially resemble unaffected littermates. Slower growth and coat changes may become apparent later in puppyhood, rather than immediately after birth. This delayed appearance is one reason a casual comparison of newborn puppies cannot rule the condition in or out.
- Growth: a puppy may stop gaining height or body size at the expected rate.
- Coat: changes in hair development or coat quality can emerge as the dog matures.
- Developmental pattern: the timing and combination of signs matter more than size alone.
These signs are not specific to pituitary dwarfism. Poor growth can also reflect nutrition, parasites, chronic disease, skeletal problems, or other endocrine disorders. Do not diagnose a puppy from photographs, littermate comparisons, or an online story. A veterinarian should examine any dog with persistent growth or coat concerns and decide which tests are appropriate.

How is a suspected case evaluated?
There is no reliable home checklist that confirms pituitary dwarfism. A useful veterinary appointment begins with a complete history: birth and growth records, diet, illness, medications, vaccination dates, littermate information, and the dates when growth or coat changes were first noticed.

- Describe the timeline. Tell the veterinarian whether the puppy was initially similar to littermates and when growth or coat differences appeared.
- Follow the recommended diagnostic plan. The clinician may need to distinguish pituitary disease from nutritional, infectious, skeletal, or other hormonal causes. The LHX3 test described in the German Shepherd study can identify carriers; it should not be treated as a universal consumer DNA answer or as a substitute for clinical evaluation.
- Ask what the result means for the individual dog. A diagnosis, a carrier result, and an uncertain result have different implications for care and for any future breeding decision.
If a rescue dog’s origin is unclear, preserve all records and ask the rescue or shelter what diagnostic evidence supports the stated diagnosis. “Dwarf” used as an informal description is not equivalent to a confirmed endocrine diagnosis.
What does the clinical research say about treatment and quality of life?
The most useful outcome evidence comes from Kitzmann and colleagues’ 2021 study in PLOS ONE. It used owner-completed standardized questionnaires for 47 German Shepherd Dogs with presumed pituitary dwarfism and 94 unaffected German Shepherd controls. The affected dogs were analyzed according to the treatment they had received, including a levothyroxine-treated group.

| Evidence group | What the study reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 47 dogs with presumed dwarfism | Owners completed standardized questionnaires about wellbeing and other outcomes. | These were presumed cases in an observational study, not a randomly selected prevalence sample. |
| Levothyroxine-treated affected dogs | The study reported the best quality-of-life ratings in this group, similar to the unaffected German Shepherd controls. | This is an association in survey data, not proof that every affected dog will respond the same way or that treatment is suitable without veterinary supervision. |
| Other affected treatment categories | Affected dogs were compared by treatment received; the study also examined survival, concurrent disease, and adverse effects. | The paper’s findings should not be converted into a head-to-head clinical-trial result or a self-treatment plan. |
| 94 unaffected controls | Provided a comparison group of German Shepherd Dogs without reported dwarfism. | Controls show how owners rated unaffected dogs in this sample; they do not establish a normal value for every German Shepherd. |
The study has important limits. It was observational rather than randomized, relied on owner questionnaires, and included dogs described as having presumed dwarfism. Treatment was not assigned under a controlled protocol, so differences between groups may reflect disease severity, age, concurrent illness, access to care, or other factors. The authors explicitly noted that larger studies are lacking. The findings support discussing treatment options with a veterinarian; they do not justify starting, stopping, or adjusting levothyroxine on your own.
Survival, concurrent diseases, and adverse effects were part of the study’s assessment, but the existence of those analyses should not be mistaken for a guarantee about an individual dog’s lifespan or response. An owner needs a patient-specific plan based on examination, laboratory interpretation, monitoring, and the dog’s overall welfare.
Does Chance’s story prove that commercial breeders cause dwarfism?
No. The ASPCA account documents Chance’s reported origin, transport crash, rescue, and later diagnosis. It does not show how many puppies from commercial facilities have pituitary dwarfism, compare those rates with other breeding settings, or demonstrate that a named breeding practice created the LHX3 mutation.

Because the disorder is described as autosomal recessive, the mutation can pass through apparently healthy carriers. A breeding facility could fail to identify or manage inherited risk, but that specific conclusion requires records and genetic evidence. The van crash is a separate event and should not be presented as the cause of a hereditary endocrine disorder.
The strongest way to read the advocacy language is as a welfare argument: Chance’s circumstances illustrate concerns the ASPCA associates with commercial puppy production. That argument may prompt scrutiny of housing, veterinary care, breeding records, transport, and inspection. It remains different from epidemiological proof that the entire commercial breeding sector causes dwarfism.
What should a guardian do if a puppy may have dwarfism?
- Get veterinary care promptly. Delayed growth deserves an examination even when the puppy is bright and eating normally.
- Keep objective records. Record weight and height at regular intervals using the same method, and save dated photographs.
- Do not use appearance as a diagnosis. Small stature, a soft coat, or an unusual body shape can have many causes.
- Ask for the basis of any claimed diagnosis. Request veterinary records and clarify whether the statement refers to clinical findings, a genetic result, or an informal description.
- Discuss breeding only after confirmation. A carrier result and an affected-dog diagnosis require different decisions. Use veterinary and genetic counseling before breeding.
- Report welfare concerns through the appropriate channel. If records suggest neglect, unsafe transport, or illegal conditions, contact the relevant local animal-welfare or regulatory authority rather than relying on social-media claims.
Chance’s story is emotionally powerful because it connects a recognizable dog to difficult questions about breeding and transport. The medically important lesson is narrower and more useful: pituitary dwarfism is a rare inherited condition associated with an LHX3 mutation, signs may emerge after early puppyhood, and diagnosis and treatment belong with a veterinarian. The ethical lesson is also evidence-based: one rescue account can justify asking how animals are bred, housed, screened, and transported, but broader claims require broader data.
