Trichogaster lalius, commonly called the dwarf gourami, is a small labyrinth fish that can thrive in a peaceful, planted freshwater aquarium when its environment is stable. The essentials are gentle circulation, open access to atmospheric air at the surface, a mature cycled filter, regular testing, varied omnivore feeding and carefully chosen tank mates. Published care sheets disagree on minimum aquarium size and on whether one fish, a pair or a group is best, so the safest choice depends on the tank’s dimensions, cover, sex and the individual fish’s temperament.
What is a dwarf gourami?
Dwarf gouramis are colorful anabantoid fish from slow-moving, heavily vegetated freshwater habitats. Their labyrinth organ allows them to gulp air from above the water, supplementing oxygen taken through the gills. That adaptation explains why a fish may occasionally visit the surface, but it does not make filtration, testing or water changes optional. OATA specifically warns that labyrinth breathing does not reduce the need for good water quality.

Adults reach up to 7.5 cm (about 3 inches), according to Fluval’s species spotlight. They are omnivores and often spend time among stems, floating plants and other cover. A planted layout with shaded retreats and some unobstructed surface area supports natural behavior while reducing visual conflict.

Choose the aquarium size from the source and the stocking plan
There is no single, universally adopted minimum. The published figures below refer to different recommendations and should not be blended into one “official” number.
| Publisher | Guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarium Co-Op | 10 US gallons or larger | A minimum starting point for a carefully furnished aquarium, commonly with one centerpiece fish. |
| Fluval | 15 US gallons (60 L) minimum | A larger minimum that gives a pair or community layout more swimming room and territory breaks. |
| OATA | At least 45 L for a small group of smaller gouramis | General gourami guidance, not a controlled dwarf-gourami-only trial; group stocking requires additional space and cover. |
Whichever figure you follow, prioritize a mature, cycled aquarium over a newly filled tank. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero before fish are introduced. Adding livestock too quickly or overstocking can cause toxic spikes even when the tank appears clear.
Build the layout around surface access
- Leave a clear route to the surface so every fish can gulp air without squeezing through dense hardscape or plant growth.
- Use live or soft artificial plants, wood and other sight-line breaks to create retreats. Floating plants can provide shade, but do not cover the entire surface.
- Choose a filter that provides biological filtration without blasting the fish. A spray bar, pre-filter sponge or baffled outlet can spread flow.
- Install a heater and a secure lid. Warm, humid air above the water helps reduce the shock of repeated trips from warm water into cold, dry room air.
- Use a substrate and decorations with no sharp edges that could tear the long fins.
Temperature, pH and hardness: keep a stable range
The following values come from separate publishers. Stability within a suitable range is more useful than repeatedly chasing a “perfect” reading.
| Source | Temperature | pH | Hardness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aquarium Co-Op | 72–82°F (22–28°C) | 6–8 | Soft to hard water tolerated |
| Fluval | 76–82°F (24–28°C) | 6.0–7.5 | 3–18 dH |
Use a reliable thermometer and test the water in the same way each time. If your tap water sits outside the chosen range, adjust it gradually rather than making abrupt corrections. Avoid mixing source ranges as though they were a single laboratory standard.

How to cycle and maintain the aquarium
Before purchase, run the aquarium through a fishless cycle or otherwise confirm that its biological filter can process waste. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises preparing the aquarium and asking a veterinarian about cycling; OATA likewise says ammonia and nitrite must be zero before introduction.
OATA recommends testing at least weekly for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness, and changing 25% of the water weekly. Its care sheet states: “Water testing kits are essential so that water quality can be checked on a regular basis (once a week) to ensure it does not slip below the water requirements stated above.” Treat replacement tap water with an aquarium conditioner before it enters the tank. A freshwater aquarium test kit, thermometer, heater, filter, siphon, conditioner and plant-safe cleaning tools cover the core routine.
- Test the aquarium before feeding, recording ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness.
- Use a siphon to remove debris while taking out about 25% of the water.
- Prepare replacement water at a similar temperature and dose it with conditioner according to its label.
- Refill slowly to avoid uprooting plants or creating a strong current.
- Rinse filter media only in removed aquarium water when it is clogged; untreated tap water can damage beneficial bacteria.
- Recheck fish behavior after maintenance. Gasping, clamped fins or sudden hiding warrants another water test.
Should you keep one dwarf gourami, a pair or a group?
Care sources describe different social arrangements. Aquarium Co-Op generally favors one dwarf gourami as a centerpiece because males may chase, nip and fight. Fluval describes the species as territorial, especially while spawning, and presents a planted, structured pair as an option; it also notes that males may chase females. OATA’s broader gourami guidance recommends groups with two females per male.
These recommendations are not interchangeable. Sex, tank footprint, density of plants, escape routes and individual personality all change the result.

One fish
A single dwarf gourami is a cautious choice when you cannot verify sex, when the aquarium is near the smaller published minimum, or when you want to limit territorial disputes. It can still interact with peaceful community fish, provided they do not compete aggressively for food.
A pair
A male and female may work in a spacious, heavily planted aquarium with multiple territories, but a male can harass a female. Watch for persistent chasing, torn fins or a fish that cannot reach food. Be prepared to separate them if cover does not break the pattern.
A group
Group stocking requires the most space and planning. OATA’s two-females-per-male advice is intended to distribute attention, not to guarantee compatibility. A group should have dense cover, open swimming lanes and a backup plan for a bully. Do not add several fish at once to an immature filter.
What are good dwarf gourami tank mates?
Compatibility is a temperament and size question, not a name on a community-fish list. Peaceful, similarly sized species that use different parts of the aquarium are the lower-risk choices. Suggested companions include small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, small loaches and some peaceful livebearers. Introduce community fish only after the aquarium is stable and provide enough cover for each species.

Tank mates to avoid
- Large or aggressive fish that can injure or intimidate a dwarf gourami.
- Persistent fin-nippers that target its flowing fins.
- Very timid fish that may remain stressed around a territorial centerpiece.
- Species small enough to be swallowed or harassed.
- Fast, pushy feeders that leave the gourami unable to eat.
Observe the first hours and days after an introduction. Chasing that never stops, a fish hiding constantly, ragged fins, rapid breathing or one animal monopolizing food means the combination is failing. Use a divider or separate aquarium rather than waiting for injuries to worsen. Some individuals become more assertive at feeding time even when they appear calm at other times.

Dwarf gouramis are omnivores. Offer a quality staple flake or small pellet, then rotate suitable frozen, freeze-dried, gel or live foods. Aquarium Co-Op names flakes, pellets, bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp; Fluval also lists small flakes, pellets, freeze-dried foods and smaller frozen foods.
- Feed a small portion once daily, following OATA’s instruction to provide only what is eaten within a few minutes.
- Vary food types over the week instead of relying on one product.
- Use thawed frozen food and remove leftovers promptly.
- Feed shy companions separately if the gourami dominates the surface.
- Reduce the portion if food reaches the substrate uneaten, because excess waste burdens the filter.
A healthy fish should approach food with interest and maintain a normal body shape. Sudden refusal, wasting or repeated spitting calls for a water test and closer health check before adding supplements or medication.

Aquarium Co-Op estimates about 2–4 years with good care and diet. That is an aquarium-care estimate from the publisher, not a population-level study or a guarantee for every fish. Genetics, initial condition, chronic stress, water quality and nutrition all affect an individual outcome. Stable water and a low-conflict community give the fish the best chance of reaching the upper end of that estimate.

Buying, quarantine and health checks
OATA advises selecting fish with clear, bright eyes, intact scales and fins, normal swimming and no ulcerations or bumps. Do not choose a fish from a tank containing visibly sick animals; pathogens can be present before obvious signs appear. A separate quarantine aquarium makes it easier to observe new arrivals and prevents a problem from spreading through a display tank.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s ecological risk-screening document records that T. lalius can be infected with dwarf gourami iridovirus (DGIV), citing Rimmer et al. (2016). Aquarium Co-Op describes the disease as difficult to cure and high-mortality, while noting that its own store had not personally encountered it. Those statements do not establish current retail prevalence, prove that a particular color morph is infected, or predict a treatment outcome.
If a fish becomes ill, isolate it where practical and contact a veterinarian experienced in fish medicine. The CDC’s fish-health guidance recommends separating a sick fish and seeking veterinary advice. Avoid guessing at medication when the symptoms could instead reflect ammonia, nitrite, temperature or compatibility problems.
Daily and weekly observation checklist
- Daily: Confirm normal swimming, breathing, appetite and surface access; remove uneaten food.
- Weekly: Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness; perform the 25% partial water change; inspect the heater, filter flow and lid.
- When adding fish: Add slowly, test more frequently and watch for a new ammonia or nitrite rise.
- After rearranging plants: Check that no fish is cornered and that the surface remains open.
- At every purchase: Reject fish with abnormal swimming, damaged fins, cloudy eyes, ulcers or unexplained lumps.
A dwarf gourami setup succeeds when the aquarium is calm, covered, mature and easy to monitor. Select the stocking plan that your tank can physically support, then let observed behavior—not a rigid label—determine whether tank mates remain together.
