Ear Cropping and Tail Docking: What the Evidence Means for Dogs

Ear cropping and tail docking are surgical alterations, not grooming. Veterinary and welfare organizations cite pain and aftercare risks and find no established health benefit for cosmetic procedures.

Ear cropping and tail docking are elective operations when done for appearance. Cropping removes part of a dog’s external ear flap; docking removes part of the tail. Veterinary and welfare organizations say cosmetic versions cause pain and aftercare risks without an established health benefit. Surgery can still be appropriate when a veterinarian identifies a medical problem in an individual dog, but a breed standard or fashion is not a diagnosis.

What are ear cropping and tail docking?

Ear cropping is the surgical removal of some or all of the visible external ear flap. Tail docking is the surgical removal of part of the tail. The ASPCA describes cropping as cutting away ear cartilage and docking as partial amputation of the tail. Neither procedure is ordinary grooming: both alter living tissue and require a surgical decision, pain control and wound care.

Cosmetic procedures are performed to create a preferred outline or to conform to a traditional breed “look.” A medically indicated operation has a different purpose, such as treating disease, severe injury or another problem that threatens an individual animal’s health. The same body part may therefore be involved in two very different decisions: appearance alone versus a documented clinical need.

Why do people dock tails or crop ears?

Owners may cite tradition, a working-dog image, a show-ring standard, or beliefs that a shorter tail or erect ears prevent injury or infection. Those reasons explain why the practices continue; they do not establish that surgery helps a particular dog. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says more than 20 breed standards call for tail docking or ear cropping. A standard describes an appearance; it cannot by itself demonstrate a medical necessity.

Some proponents argue that cropping reduces ear infections or that docking prevents tail injuries. The welfare and veterinary sources reviewed do not establish those claims as benefits of cosmetic surgery. The RSPCA says there is no evidence that cropping or taping ears benefits a dog unless there is a medical reason. A Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) journal letter likewise reported no credible scientific evidence that cosmetic cropping and docking provide health or welfare benefits.

Is ear cropping painful for dogs?

Yes. Cropping cuts through the ear flap and its cartilage, creating wounds that must heal. The RSPCA describes the operation as painful and warns that healing can be prolonged, aftercare is required, and wounds may become infected. The danger is greater when a procedure is carried out without prescribed anaesthesia or pain relief. Taping or shaping the ears afterward can extend the period of discomfort and wound management.

Tail docking is also painful because it removes part of the tail, which contains skin, muscle, nerves and vertebrae. The CVMA characterizes cosmetic procedures as unnecessary pain. Pain is not limited to the moment of surgery: the healing period, handling of the wound and complications can all affect welfare. Evidence in the cited sources does not provide a reliable incidence rate for these complications, so a percentage should not be assumed.

A veterinarian who believes surgery is necessary for disease or injury should explain the expected pain, prescribe appropriate analgesia, use anaesthesia suited to the patient, and give an aftercare plan. That clinical context is different from operating solely to change appearance.

Does cropping a dog’s ears prevent ear infections?

The sources reviewed do not support cosmetic cropping as a proven way to prevent ear infections. The RSPCA specifically says there is no evidence of benefit from cropping or taping except for medical reasons. The CVMA letter reaches the same broad conclusion for cosmetic cropping and docking, finding no credible scientific evidence of health or welfare benefit.

Ear disease has many possible causes, and an individual dog with recurrent infections needs a veterinary examination rather than a cosmetic operation. A veterinarian can identify the actual problem and discuss evidence-based treatment or, if tissue must be removed, explain why that surgery is medically justified. A breed’s customary ear shape does not substitute for that assessment.

Can cropped ears or a docked tail affect communication?

Dogs communicate with people and other dogs through posture and movement, including ear and tail carriage. The CVMA notes that removing ears or tails may affect those signals. A shorter tail or reduced ear mobility can limit the visual information another animal uses to interpret fear, confidence, arousal or an invitation to interact.

This does not mean every dog with a cropped ear or docked tail will have a defined behavioral disorder. It means communication is a welfare consideration that should be included in the decision, rather than treating the altered appearance as purely cosmetic and consequence-free.

What do veterinary and welfare organizations say?

Organization Position or evidence described Date or qualification
American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Opposes ear cropping and tail docking when performed solely for cosmetic purposes and encourages removing them from breed standards. Position summarized in the cited veterinary guidance.
American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Opposes the procedures for cosmetic or breed-standard purposes; reports that more than 20 breed standards call for one or both. Statement last revised June 2021; page accessed October 2026.
Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) States that cosmetic procedures cause unnecessary pain and that there is no credible scientific evidence of health or welfare benefit; also raises communication concerns. Canadian Veterinary Journal letter, December 2009.
World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Opposes elective surgery performed to alter appearance or behavior based on human preference or tradition; medically necessary tail docking should be done by a veterinarian with anaesthesia and pain control. Position statement announcement, February 2024.
RSPCA Describes cropping as painful, with possible prolonged healing and infection, and says evidence does not show benefit from cropping or taping except for medical reasons. Welfare guidance cited for this topic.

WSAVA Animal Welfare Committee chair Dr Heather Bacon OBE summarized the principle this way: “Elective surgeries should not be performed simply to alter an animal’s appearance or behaviour based on human preferences or tradition. A robust cost-benefit analysis and application of the evidence is always necessary to ensure the best health and welfare outcomes for our companion animals.”

Cosmetic alteration versus medically indicated surgery

Question Cosmetic cropping or docking Medically indicated operation
Purpose Change appearance or meet a tradition or breed standard. Treat a diagnosed disease, injury or other problem affecting that individual dog.
Expected benefit No established health or welfare benefit in the cited evidence. Benefit is assessed for the patient’s specific condition, with alternatives considered.
Decision-maker Owner preference, fashion or a standard. Owner and veterinarian weighing the diagnosis, prognosis, alternatives and welfare.
Pain management Sources warn of pain and risks, especially without prescribed anaesthesia and analgesia. Veterinary anaesthesia, pain control and monitoring are part of the treatment plan.
Aftercare Healing and infection risks remain, and ear shaping may require extended care. Care is tailored to the wound and the condition being treated.
Legal question Depends on the jurisdiction and whether non-therapeutic surgery is prohibited. May be treated differently where law permits necessary veterinary treatment.

Is ear cropping legal where I live?

There is no single worldwide rule. Laws differ by country and can change, so check the current statute or local authority for the place where the procedure would occur and where the dog would be transported.

England and Wales

The RSPCA states that ear cropping is illegal in England and Wales under section 5 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The same source says it is not illegal there to import a dog whose ears were cropped in another country. That distinction concerns importing an already-cropped dog; it does not make performing the operation locally lawful.

Australia

RSPCA Australia adopted a policy on April 8, 2024 opposing non-therapeutic tail docking and ear cropping. It says a justified surgical alteration should be carried out by a registered veterinarian using appropriate anaesthesia and aftercare. This is the organization’s policy, not a complete statement of Australian law.

Should I crop my dog’s ears or dock its tail?

If the reason is appearance, tradition or a breed standard, the veterinary positions summarized above weigh against proceeding. If your dog has a medical problem, the decision should concern that diagnosis rather than the breed’s usual silhouette.

  1. Describe the actual concern. Tell the veterinarian what you have observed, when it began and how it affects the dog. Do not treat a desired appearance as a symptom.
  2. Ask what diagnosis supports surgery. Request an explanation of the expected benefit for this dog and whether an examination or tests are needed.
  3. Discuss alternatives. Ask whether medical treatment, monitoring or a less invasive option could address the problem.
  4. Clarify anaesthesia and analgesia. Find out which pain-control plan, monitoring and follow-up the veterinarian recommends.
  5. Plan aftercare before consenting. Ask how long healing is expected to take, what care is required and what complications should prompt a call.
  6. Confirm the law. Check the rules where the procedure would occur and any requirements affecting transport or import.

WSAVA’s position is that medically necessary tail docking should be performed by a veterinarian with appropriate anaesthesia and pain control. RSPCA Australia similarly limits justified surgical alterations to registered veterinary professionals working with anaesthesia and aftercare. These safeguards do not turn cosmetic surgery into a health treatment; they describe the standard expected when a genuine clinical indication exists.

What do the reported numbers show?

The RSPCA reported a 621% increase in ear-cropping reports raised with the organization between 2015 and 2020, with 279 reports in total over those six years. The figures were released in February 2022. They are reports received by that organization, not a prevalence estimate, a count of confirmed cases, or a current annual rate. They indicate increased reporting activity, but cannot establish how common cropping is among all dogs.

What a breed standard can—and cannot—tell you

A standard may describe a cropped ear or docked tail because that appearance became traditional. It does not prove that the alteration prevents disease, improves welfare or is required for soundness. AAHA’s statement that more than 20 standards call for one or both procedures illustrates how widespread the convention is, not how medically necessary it is.

When a standard conflicts with an individual dog’s welfare, the dog’s health takes priority. A veterinarian’s assessment, the evidence for expected benefit, available alternatives, pain control and applicable law are the relevant questions. Fashion, show eligibility or historical practice cannot answer them on their own.

The practical verdict

For a healthy dog, cosmetic ear cropping and tail docking offer an altered appearance, while the cited veterinary and welfare bodies identify pain, healing and communication concerns and no established health benefit. Do not assume that a breed tradition prevents infection or injury. Seek a veterinary assessment when disease or injury is the reason for considering surgery, and verify local law before any procedure or cross-border movement.
