Earthborn Cat Food in 2026: Recall Facts, Recipe Review, Pros and Cons

Earthborn has wet and dry cat foods, but its 2026 evaluation requires separating current labels from a terminated 2021 recall and later FDA warning-letter findings.

Earthborn cat food is not covered by a current blanket recall in the FDA record reviewed for 2026. The brand does have a terminated March 2021 recall involving specified products, dates and lots made at Midwestern Pet Foods’ Monmouth, Illinois facility, plus an August 2021 FDA warning letter that documented Salmonella-positive Earthborn lots and broader manufacturing-control findings. Those records matter, but they do not establish that every current Earthborn recipe is affected. The practical decision is to check the exact product, lot code and expiration date, then judge the recipe against your cat’s nutritional and medical needs.

What this Earthborn review finds

Earthborn Holistic’s current cat-food catalog displays nine results, with both wet and dry choices. The visible catalog names are Primitive Feline, Wild Sea Catch, Catalina Catch, Chicken Catcciatori, Harbor Harvest, Monterey Medley, Chicken Jumble with Liver and Chicken Fricatssee. The catalog count and names establish variety, but the format, package size and current ingredient panel for each recipe should be confirmed on its individual product page before you buy. Product pages can change, and a catalog tile alone is not enough to infer whether a named recipe is canned, pouched or dry.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The clearest label example is Primitive Feline. Its current manufacturer page lists chicken and chicken meal first, followed by pumpkin, sweet potato, tapioca, peas and pea protein. Later ingredients include chicken fat, flaxseed, dried egg, salmon meal, Alaska pollock meal, Pacific whiting meal, taurine, added vitamins and minerals, and probiotics. Earthborn says Primitive Feline is formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. That is a formulation statement from the maker, not an independent nutritional audit, a feeding-trial result or a guarantee that the food suits an individual cat.

For safety questions, the most accurate answer is neither “always safe” nor “never safe.” FDA records describe a specific 2021 recall and later warning-letter findings. The FDA now marks the recall terminated, while the warning letter remains historical regulatory context. A cat owner should use the product’s exact lot and expiration information, monitor FDA notices and ask a veterinarian about allergies, diagnosed disease or prescription diets.

What the catalog shows

The manufacturer’s catalog accessed October 13, 2026, displays nine cat-food results. The visible names are:

  • Primitive Feline
  • Wild Sea Catch
  • Catalina Catch
  • Chicken Catcciatori
  • Harbor Harvest
  • Monterey Medley
  • Chicken Jumble with Liver
  • Chicken Fricatssee

Because only eight names are visible in the catalog information available here, the ninth result should be identified from the live catalog before publication or purchase rather than guessed. The same caution applies to format: the catalog demonstrates a wet-and-dry range, but it does not by itself provide a complete recipe-by-recipe wet/dry breakdown.

How to compare the individual products

Open the current product page for the exact recipe and record the details printed on the package or page:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether it is dry food or a wet food and the package size.
  • The first several animal and plant ingredients.
  • Any grain, pea, pea-protein or other ingredient your cat must avoid.
  • The stated life stage and any feeding directions.
  • The guaranteed analysis and calorie information, when published.
  • The lot and expiration information on the physical package.

Do not transfer Primitive Feline’s ingredients or life-stage statement to Wild Sea Catch, Catalina Catch or another recipe. A named flavor does not establish its protein sources, carbohydrate ingredients or adequacy statement.

Primitive Feline: the best-documented example

Ingredient profile

The label opens with “Chicken, Chicken Meal, Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Tapioca, Peas, Pea Protein.” Chicken and chicken meal therefore provide the first listed animal ingredients. The recipe also uses chicken fat, dried egg and several fish meals, including salmon, Alaska pollock and Pacific whiting. Taurine, vitamins, minerals and probiotics appear later in the list.

Zesty Paws Dog Vitamins - Dog Multivitamin Chews, Chicken, 90 Ct | Dog Vitamins and Supplements for Hip & Joints, Skin & Coat, Omega 3 Fish Oil for Dogs
  • 8-in-1 Formula - Zesty Paws Multifunctional Bites are functional supplement chews with premium ingredients that support physical performance, antioxidants, hip & joint, heart, immune, skin, liver, & gut health for dogs of all ages, breeds, and sizes.
  • Skin Health & Antioxidants – For animals with sensitive skin, this formula contains Cod Liver Fish Oil and Vitamin E to help maintain normal moisture and CoQ10 to help reduce oxidative stress.
  • Hip, Joint & Performance Support - Each dog chew features OptiMSM, a premium form of MSM for muscular support, which works synergistically with the Glucosamine HCl and Chondroitin Sulfate in these chews for hip and joint support plus Cod Liver Oil and B-Complex Vitamins support normal physical performance.
  • Gut Health & Probiotics - These chews also contain a six-strain Gut Health Blend (500 million cfu per chew) and a Digestive Health Blend to promote gut flora while supporting normal bowel function for dogs.
  • Heart, Liver & Immune Health - Multifunctional Bites feature powerful antioxidants, premium CoQ10, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamins A, C, & E to promote healthy cardiovascular function, support liver health and enhance immune response.

Primitive Feline is grain-free, but grain-free does not mean carbohydrate-free. Pumpkin, sweet potato, tapioca, peas and pea protein all contribute non-animal ingredients. Pea protein can also raise the total apparent protein percentage without representing the same amino-acid profile as meat. For a cat that reacts to poultry, egg, fish or peas, the full current label matters more than the product name.

Life-stage statement and its limits

Earthborn states that Primitive Feline is formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. An all-life-stages profile is a nutrient-target statement covering growth and maintenance requirements; it is not proof of superior health outcomes, digestibility, palatability or suitability for every kitten, adult or senior cat. The manufacturer also says all Earthborn recipes are formulated to meet AAFCO requirements. Treat both statements as company claims unless an independent evaluation is available.

Earthborn recall and FDA safety history

Three FDA records are easy to conflate. They concern different events, facilities and scopes.

Date FDA record What it covered How to interpret it now
January 11, 2021 Expanded aflatoxin recall Corn-containing dog and cat products made at Midwestern Pet Foods’ Oklahoma facility. Listed brands included Sportmix, Pro Pac and Nunn Better; Earthborn Holistic does not appear among the product names listed in the notice. A separate Midwestern event, not an Earthborn-specific recall listing.
March 27, 2021 FDA publication of Midwestern’s voluntary recall announcement Specified Earthborn Holistic and other products, expiration dates and lots made at the Monmouth, Illinois facility because of potential Salmonella contamination. The FDA page now marks this recall terminated. Termination concerns removal, correction or product disposition; it is not a guarantee that every product from the company is risk-free.
August 9, 2021 FDA warning letter Inspection and preventive-control findings, including Salmonella-positive finished lots identified as Earthborn Coastal Catch, Meadow Feast and Wild Sea Catch, with discussion of distribution of portions of some lots. Historical company-level regulatory context, not a statement that every current formula or bag is under recall.

The March 2021 Earthborn recall

The FDA’s March 27, 2021 notice relayed Midwestern Pet Foods’ March 26 voluntary recall. It covered specified products manufactured at the Monmouth, Illinois facility, with particular expiration dates and lot codes, because of potential Salmonella contamination. The notice explicitly says, “This recall covers only certain products manufactured at Midwestern Pet Foods Monmouth, Illinois facility.” It also says other Midwestern products were unaffected by that particular recall.

That wording is important. A recall is a targeted corrective action for identified products, dates, lots or facilities. It is not evidence that every Earthborn recipe was contaminated, and it is not evidence that every product made by the company is permanently unsafe. Conversely, the FDA’s terminated status should not be read as a lifetime guarantee for a new package. Check the lot and expiration code on the bag or can against current FDA information whenever a safety concern arises.

The January 2021 aflatoxin event was separate

FDA’s January 11 expanded recall concerned corn-containing foods made at the Oklahoma facility. The listed product names included Sportmix, Pro Pac, Nunn Better and other named products; Earthborn Holistic is not listed in that notice. FDA’s broader alert reported more than 110 pet deaths and more than 210 sick pets as of January 21, 2021. Those figures referred to affected Midwestern foods in the aflatoxin investigation, not to Earthborn cats specifically.

Do not merge the aflatoxin event with the March Earthborn recall. They involved different hazards, product lists and facility information.

What the August 2021 warning letter adds

The FDA warning letter dated August 9, 2021 provides broader manufacturing context. It discusses inspection findings and states that FDA found Salmonella-positive results in several finished lots, including Earthborn Coastal Catch, Meadow Feast and Wild Sea Catch. It also discusses distribution of portions of some identified lots. The letter does not establish that those historical lots are currently on sale, nor does it put every current Earthborn formula under a present recall.

What the safety record means for a current purchase

Use lot-specific checking, not a brand-wide shortcut

When you have a package in hand, photograph the product name, lot code, expiration date and manufacturer information. Compare those details with the FDA’s current recall database and the company’s notices. If a code matches a recall, stop feeding it, keep the packaging and follow the regulator’s return or disposal instructions. If your cat becomes ill after eating any food, contact a veterinarian promptly and retain the package for identification.

Understand the limits of a terminated recall

The FDA’s “terminated” label means the agency determined that the recall action had been completed through removal, correction or disposition of the affected product. It does not certify every later batch, and it does not replace ordinary storage, handling and expiration checks. A sealed, in-date package with a code outside a specific notice is not the same thing as a package named in that notice, but no historical record can guarantee an individual cat’s response.

Get veterinary help for higher-risk cats

Ask your veterinarian before changing food for a cat with a diagnosed illness, food allergy, chronic gastrointestinal signs, urinary disease, kidney disease or a prescription diet. A grain-free or fish-containing recipe may be inappropriate for a particular medical plan even when its label meets a nutrient profile. Seek urgent veterinary advice for repeated vomiting, severe diarrhea, marked lethargy, refusal to eat or other signs of illness.

Potential advantages of Earthborn cat food

  • Choice of formats and named recipes: The current catalog offers wet and dry options and multiple named formulas, giving owners more than one texture and protein direction to consider.
  • A detailed example label: Primitive Feline publishes a full ingredient sequence that can be inspected before purchase, including its animal proteins, plant ingredients, taurine, micronutrients and probiotics.
  • A stated all-life-stages formulation: The manufacturer identifies Primitive Feline as meeting AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. This can simplify feeding a multi-cat household when the recipe suits each cat.
  • Company information is available: Earthborn identifies Midwestern Pet Foods as its maker and says the company was founded in 1926. It says its dry dog and cat foods and treats are made in four company-owned U.S. kitchens in Indiana, Illinois, New York and Oklahoma.

The facility statement is specifically about dry foods and treats. It should not be extended to wet foods without a separate, current confirmation.

Potential drawbacks and cautions

  • Historical FDA events: The March 2021 recall and August 2021 warning letter are material parts of the company’s safety history, even though the recall was limited to specified products and is now marked terminated.
  • Grain-free, pea-containing example: Primitive Feline contains peas and pea protein as well as tapioca, sweet potato and pumpkin. Cats that need a different ingredient profile should compare the current label or use a veterinarian-directed diet.
  • Limited independent verification: The available AAFCO statements are manufacturer claims. They do not independently verify formulation, manufacturing controls, digestibility or outcomes in an individual cat.
  • Incomplete catalog detail at a glance: The catalog count is nine, but the visible information does not fully identify the format and package details for every result. Buying decisions should rely on the linked product page and physical label.
  • No blanket safety conclusion: A terminated, lot-specific recall cannot support either “every current bag is dangerous” or “the brand can never have another problem.”

Wet versus dry: choosing the format for your cat

When wet food may fit better

Wet food supplies substantial water and can be useful for cats that eat poorly, prefer soft textures or need a veterinarian-managed hydration strategy. Confirm that the specific can or pouch is complete and balanced for the intended life stage; a flavor name alone does not establish adequacy.

When dry food may fit better

Dry food is convenient to measure and store. It is also more calorie-dense by weight, so portion control matters. Primitive Feline’s published ingredient list is for a dry-style recipe, but do not assume every Earthborn dry formula uses the same proteins, legumes or life-stage wording.

Mixed feeding

Combining wet and dry can work when total calories are adjusted and both foods are nutritionally complete for the cat’s life stage. Introduce the combination gradually, monitor body weight and stool quality, and follow veterinary advice for cats with medical conditions.

How to transition to Earthborn

Earthborn’s manufacturer guidance is to change foods gradually over seven to 10 days. A practical schedule is:

  1. Days 1–2: feed mostly the current food with a small portion of the new food.
  2. Days 3–4: increase the new food while reducing the old food.
  3. Days 5–6: make the new food the larger share.
  4. Days 7–10: move to the intended full portion if your cat is eating normally and stools remain acceptable.

Slow the transition if your cat develops loose stool, vomiting or food refusal. Do not force a fast change in a cat with a history of gastrointestinal disease; ask your veterinarian for a tailored plan. Keep fresh water available, especially when changing between wet and dry formats.

A practical label-and-recall checklist

  1. Identify the exact recipe: Record the full product name, format and package size rather than relying on “Earthborn” alone.
  2. Read the adequacy statement: Confirm whether the food is complete and balanced and which life stage it covers.
  3. Inspect the ingredient list: Note primary animal proteins, fish, egg, grains, peas, pea protein and any ingredient your cat cannot tolerate.
  4. Record the code: Save the lot number and expiration date before opening the package.
  5. Check FDA notices: Compare the code with current notices, remembering that the March 2021 action involved specified lots and dates.
  6. Transition over seven to 10 days: Adjust portions for calories and watch appetite, stool and hydration.
  7. Escalate concerns: Contact a veterinarian for persistent digestive signs, allergy symptoms or any cat that needs a prescription diet.

How independent reviews should be read

Cats.com evaluates Earthborn using its own categories, including species-appropriateness, ingredient quality, variety, price, customer experience and recall history, then assigns its own overall rating. That score is an editorial judgment produced by that outlet’s method, not a standardized scientific assessment or an FDA grade.

Catster’s 2026 review states that it was created in partnership with Earthborn Holistic and that Earthborn compensated Catster for editorial work. Any favorable assessment from that review should therefore be read with that disclosure in mind. Neither outlet’s score should be combined with the other to create an invented average.

Who may want a different approach

Earthborn can be difficult to evaluate for a cat that requires a tightly controlled elimination diet because several recipes may use multiple animal proteins, fish, egg or legumes. Primitive Feline, for example, combines poultry, egg and several fish meals rather than offering a single-protein profile. Cats with confirmed allergies, chronic disease or a prescription requirement should be matched to a veterinarian-approved formula, not selected solely from a marketing claim or review score.

Bottom line on Earthborn cat food in 2026

Earthborn offers meaningful recipe variety and publishes a detailed Primitive Feline label with an all-life-stages AAFCO formulation claim. Those are useful product attributes, not proof of superior health results. The brand’s record also includes a terminated March 2021 recall for specified products and lots, an August 2021 FDA warning letter describing Salmonella-positive Earthborn lots, and broader preventive-control findings. The January 2021 aflatoxin recall was a separate Oklahoma-facility event whose listed products did not include Earthborn.

If you are considering a current bag or can, verify the exact formula, life-stage statement, ingredients, lot code and expiration date. Transition over seven to 10 days, and involve your veterinarian for allergies, illness, unusual symptoms or prescription feeding. That lot-specific, cat-specific approach is more accurate than treating the company as either universally safe or universally unsafe.
