They breathe through moist skin, hatch from cocoons, and occur in thousands of species occupying different soil zones. Their tunnels can improve infiltration and aeration, yet introduced earthworms can damage forests that evolved without them. The useful answer is therefore not simply “earthworms are good” or “earthworms are bad”: effects depend on species, habitat and what the animals are doing there.
This guide separates the biology shared by many earthworms from traits that vary among ecological groups, then explains when their soil work helps, when it can cause problems, and why some species are raised for composting.

1. Earthworms are segmented invertebrates
An earthworm has no internal bones. Its body is divided into repeated segments, and bands of muscle contract and relax in sequence to push the animal through soil or across a surface. Small bristles, called setae, grip the surrounding material while those waves of contraction move the body forward.
That design lets an earthworm wedge between soil particles, compact or extend different body sections, and anchor itself when a predator or disturbance pulls at it. The familiar cylindrical shape hides considerable variation: species differ in size, pigmentation, burrowing behavior and preferred soil layer.

There is no single settled species count
“Earthworm” is a common name covering many species rather than one animal. Penn State Extension reports more than 1,000 species, while the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reports more than 3,000. The safest global description is thousands of species; the estimates differ in scope and source, so neither should be presented as an exact worldwide total.
2. They breathe through their skin
Earthworms exchange gases across their skin instead of using lungs. The skin must stay moist so oxygen can dissolve and pass into the body while carbon dioxide moves out. Damp soil, leaf litter and humid compost therefore support breathing.
When an earthworm dries out, that gas exchange fails and the animal can die. This explains why worms are most active after rain or in shaded, moisture-retaining soil, and why exposed pavement on a hot, dry day is dangerous. Moisture does not mean permanent flooding is ideal: prolonged saturation can reduce the oxygen available in soil and force worms to move toward better-aerated spaces.
3. Different earthworms occupy different soil zones
Species are not interchangeable. Ecologists commonly distinguish groups by where they live, how they burrow and what they eat. The three broad categories below explain why observations of one worm cannot automatically be applied to every earthworm.

| Ecological group | Typical soil zone | Burrow pattern | Food source and behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Litter dwellers | At or near the surface in leaves and other litter | Usually little permanent burrowing in mineral soil | Surface litter and decomposing material; generally little soil ingestion |
| Topsoil dwellers | Upper mineral soil | Shallow, often horizontal burrows | Organic matter mixed with soil in the upper layer |
| Subsoil dwellers | Deeper soil profiles | Persistent, mainly vertical tunnels | Surface residues pulled downward and processed with soil |
These are ecological patterns, not rigid labels for every species. Temperature, moisture, food availability and soil structure can change where an individual is found.
4. What do earthworms eat?
Earthworms feed on organic material and soil, but the proportions depend on the ecological group. A litter-dwelling worm may consume fallen leaves and partly decomposed plant material at the surface. A topsoil or subsoil species encounters organic matter attached to mineral particles and can ingest soil along with that food.
As material passes through the digestive tract, it is excreted as a casting. Castings contain processed organic matter and mineral particles, and their production helps redistribute nutrients. It is inaccurate to say every earthworm eats the same food or that all species are dedicated leaf eaters. Their diet follows their habitat.
Why feeding changes the ground
Feeding moves organic material through different layers and breaks larger residues into forms that microorganisms can further decompose. The result is a biological mixing process, not a guaranteed fertilizer effect. Soil texture, plant community, climate and the species present determine whether that processing is useful, neutral or disruptive.

5. How do earthworms reproduce?
Many earthworm species are hermaphrodites, meaning one individual has both male and female reproductive structures. Even so, many commonly mate with a partner and exchange sperm. During reproduction, the clitellum—the conspicuous band around the body of a mature worm—helps produce a cocoon in which embryos develop.
Hermaphroditism does not mean every species must find a mate. Some species can reproduce without a partner, so a universal rule about mating would be misleading. Reproductive strategy varies among species and populations.
Young worms hatch from cocoons
Eggs develop inside protective cocoons rather than being born live. Penn State Extension gives a typical figure of 20 to 30 cocoons per year, with one to 10 eggs in each cocoon, but emphasizes that output changes with species and environmental conditions. Temperature, moisture, food supply and crowding can all affect reproduction, so those numbers are useful context rather than a promise for every worm.

Earthworm tunnels create connected spaces through otherwise compact soil. Depending on the species and site, those channels can help rain infiltrate, improve air movement and provide routes for roots and microorganisms. Deep vertical burrows may carry surface residues downward, while shallow horizontal channels concentrate activity near the topsoil.

Castings and the processing of organic matter can contribute to soil aggregation—the formation of more stable crumbs or clumps—and to movement of nutrients through the profile. These are mechanisms, not guaranteed outcomes. A dry, compacted soil, a waterlogged site or a community dominated by one introduced species may respond differently from a diverse, undisturbed soil.
Why “ecosystem engineer” is a useful description
FAO describes earthworms as “ecosystem engineers” because their feeding and construction physically modify habitat for other organisms. The phrase describes their influence; it does not mean every modification benefits every plant or ecosystem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Are earthworms good for soil?
In many gardens, farms and natural soils, earthworm activity is associated with better infiltration, aeration, aggregation and nutrient movement. Those services are especially plausible when the resident species are adapted to the habitat and food is available without destroying the soil’s existing structure.
“Good for soil” is therefore a context-dependent judgment. A worm that opens useful channels in a cultivated bed may have a very different effect in a forest whose leaf layer evolved without earthworms. To assess an unfamiliar site, identify which species or ecological group is present, where the worms are feeding, and whether plant regeneration or soil cover is changing.

8. Earthworms are not native everywhere
Native status matters. In the Great Lakes region, many earthworms arrived from Europe and Asia, often through human activity. Minnesota Extension warns that some introduced species consume the forest-floor duff—the organic layer of leaves and other debris—and can limit regeneration of native trees.
This regional warning should not be generalized to every garden, lawn or ecosystem. A nonnative earthworm can be a useful decomposer in a managed compost bin yet a serious disturbance agent in a forest that developed without earthworms. Local habitat history and the particular species determine the risk.
What to avoid assuming
- Finding worms in a garden does not prove they are native to the surrounding region.
- A large worm population does not automatically indicate healthy soil.
- Soil benefits documented in agricultural settings do not establish the same outcome in boreal or hardwood forests.
9. Some species are raised for vermicomposting
Vermicomposting uses earthworms to process suitable organic waste in a managed container. Surface-litter species such as red wigglers are commonly used because they feed near the surface, where a composting bin concentrates food and moisture. This use is distinct from the ecological role of deep-burrowing soil species.
A composting setup must match the worm’s needs: adequate moisture, air spaces and an appropriate supply of decomposing organic material. The worms’ castings become part of the finished compost. A species chosen for a bin should not be released outdoors, especially where introduced earthworms could alter a sensitive ecosystem.
10. How to interpret an earthworm sighting
One worm on a sidewalk, in a garden bed or in a compost bin tells you very little by itself. Use the setting to form a more reliable interpretation:
- Check moisture and shade. Surface activity after rain is consistent with the need for moist skin and does not by itself indicate an unusual population.
- Look at the soil layer. Worms concentrated in leaf litter behave differently from worms making deep, persistent vertical tunnels.
- Notice the food source. Fallen leaves, compost and soil-bound organic matter point to different feeding strategies.
- Consider the ecosystem. A cultivated bed, a compost bin and a Great Lakes forest do not carry the same ecological stakes.
- Avoid moving worms between sites. Transporting a species into habitat where it did not evolve can create the very invasion problem documented in some forests.
These checks are more informative than judging every earthworm by its size or by a single claim about “worms improving soil.”
Earthworms: the practical takeaway
Earthworms are moist-skinned, segmented animals whose movement, feeding and cocoon production vary across thousands of species. Their tunnels and castings can improve the movement of air, water and nutrients, which is why many are valued in managed soils and vermicomposting. The same engineering activity can remove forest-floor duff and hinder native tree regeneration where introduced worms enter ecosystems that evolved without them. Identify the habitat and ecological group before deciding whether an earthworm is beneficial, harmless or a concern.
