Verdict: Ebita Breed Jo Hinomaru Bento (also spelled Bentou) looks like a useful supplemental pellet for freshwater shrimp, but the available evidence does not justify calling it objectively better than competing foods. One hobbyist reported strong feeding response, intact small pellets and little visible clouding; those observations were uncontrolled and do not demonstrate better molting, survival or breeding. Buy it for the reported handling and palatability only if the package label, seller and price make sense in your market.

What Ebita Breed Jo Hinomaru Bento is

Jo Hinomaru Bento is a packaged shrimp food associated with Ebita Breed and marketed for freshwater aquariums. Retail and review pages use both “Jo Hinomaru Bento” and “Jo Hinomaru Bentou,” so either spelling can identify the same product. It is sold as a dry pellet rather than a wafer or gel food. Available listings show that the product is not presented in one universally consistent package: one review describes a 20 g container, while a Singapore retailer lists 50 g. Treat the size printed on the pack in front of you as authoritative.

How strong is the “hype” evidence?

The most detailed use report comes from an Aquariadise review updated in March 2026. Its reviewer fed the food for several weeks in a planted 30-gallon aquarium containing red cherry and Amano shrimp. They described shrimp gathering quickly, pellets staying intact and little visible clouding. Those are useful practical observations, but they are one person’s account in one aquarium. There was no controlled comparison with another food, independent replication, laboratory analysis or measured outcome for growth, molt success, survival or breeding.

A historical forum repost repeats that review, so it should not be counted as a second independent test. Retail descriptions explain the intended function of the product, not proof that it delivers the claimed biological benefits. In practical terms, the evidence supports “some shrimp accepted these pellets and the water looked clear in that setup,” not “this formula improves colony performance.”

Ingredients: why the labels need careful reading

Ingredient information is not consistent across the available sources. FishyHub/Faith Aquatics lists a retailer-provided description of seaweed powder, beer yeast, wheat gluten meal, soybean powder, fish meal, shrimp meal, squid meal, chlorella, fly larva powder, pupa powder, coconut powder, calcium carbonate and lactic acid bacteria for marine products. That is not a manufacturer label verified here.

The Aquariadise review instead mentions phospholipids, animal cholesterol, vitamin C, DHA, freshwater chlorella and a product feature called “Shrimp Guard.” The reviewer also says the package is labeled in Japanese and that exact ingredients were difficult to verify. These two descriptions do not match one-to-one, so they should not be merged into a single definitive formula.

If ingredient transparency is your priority, photograph the original package, obtain a translation and ask the seller for a current specification before purchase. Do not infer that a named additive prevents failed molts or guarantees breeding; no controlled evidence in the available material supports those outcomes.

What the pellets were like in use

Reported feeding response

In the 30-gallon planted aquarium, the reviewer saw red cherry and Amano shrimp congregate around the small square pellets. This suggests the food was attractive in that colony, but feeding response varies with stocking density, existing biofilm, hunger and competing foods. A rapid swarm is not a health test.

Pellet integrity and residue

The same account describes little visible clouding and pellets that held together during feeding. That can make portioning easier and may reduce the chance of fine particles spreading through a filter intake. It does not mean the product cannot affect water quality: any protein-rich food can pollute water when overfed, and a pellet that looks intact can still be consumed, soften or break apart out of sight.

How to feed it without risking water quality

Published schedules differ. The retailer recommends Jo Hinomaru Bentou one or two days per week alongside Quatro2 as a staple feed, breaking large grains to match colony size. Aquariadise suggests using it two or three times weekly as a supplement and removing leftovers after two to three hours. These are source-specific instructions, not a single reconciled feeding standard. Use the directions on your actual package first, then adjust to the number and size of shrimp.

  1. Check the label and colony size. Confirm the serving guidance, expiration or lot information and whether your pellets need to be broken. A whole pellet suitable for a large colony can be excessive for a small group.
  2. Start with a conservative portion. Offer a piece that the colony can consume within roughly two hours. For a new food, begin below the package suggestion and increase only if no food remains and shrimp are still competing for it.
  3. Place it where you can observe it. Use feeding tongs or a dish in an area with good visibility and gentle flow. Avoid dropping food directly into a strong intake.
  4. Watch the first session. Note whether shrimp approach, whether the pellet stays together and whether powder clouds the water. These observations are more useful for your aquarium than a generic claim about the product.
  5. Remove leftovers. Siphon or net uneaten food after the period stated on the package; the available guidance uses two to three hours. Remove it sooner if the pellet disintegrates, fouls the substrate or attracts unwanted growth.
  6. Log the response. Record the portion, time, water clarity and any ammonia or nitrite result from your normal testing routine. Stop feeding the product if parameters rise or animals show stress, and perform the corrective water change appropriate for your aquarium.
Schedule mentioned by source Role described Important qualification
One to two days per week Used alongside Quatro2 as staple feed Retailer recommendation; follow the package in your market.
Two to three times per week Supplemental feeding Aquariadise recommendation; not a controlled feeding trial.

Is it suitable for different freshwater shrimp?

Neocaridina, such as red cherry shrimp

Red cherry shrimp were included in the reviewer’s aquarium, and the reviewer reported that they gathered to feed. That makes the food a plausible option for Neocaridina keepers who want to test a small pellet. It does not establish a preferred dose or a benefit over your current diet. Introduce it as one component of a varied routine rather than replacing all grazing and supplemental foods at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amano shrimp

Amano shrimp were also present in the reported aquarium and were observed feeding. Their larger bodies may make a whole pellet easier to handle than it is for juvenile shrimp, but the source does not provide a size-based feeding chart. Break the pellet when smaller animals cannot access it or when one shrimp monopolizes the piece.

Caridina, including Crystal Red shrimp

No source here provides a controlled test on Crystal Red or other Caridina shrimp. The product is marketed for freshwater shrimp, but that broad label is not proof of performance in a particular Caridina line or water chemistry. If you keep sensitive Caridina, test one small feeding while maintaining your established temperature, mineral and pH routine. Judge acceptance and water response in your tank instead of assuming a marketing claim applies to every colony.

Juveniles, berried females and mixed colonies

The available material does not establish special benefits for juveniles, berried females or breeding colonies. Small pellets can be hard for tiny shrimplets to reach, while a whole piece can be dominated by adults. Crush a very small amount only when needed, because extra fine particles are harder to recover and can spread through the aquarium.

Does it cloud the water?

The reviewer reported little visible clouding in a planted 30-gallon aquarium. That is encouraging for handling, not a guarantee. Cloudiness depends on dose, filtration, substrate disturbance, bacterial activity and how long food remains in the tank. The safest test is a small portion in your aquarium with normal filtration running. Remove the food when the label’s time window ends, and do not compensate for a cloudy tank by adding more products.

How long will a container last?

No reliable duration can be calculated from the available information because the sources do not state the reviewer’s portion size, shrimp count or feeding mass. A 20 g container and a 50 g container will obviously last different lengths of time, and a densely stocked colony consumes food faster than a nano group. To estimate your own usage, weigh or measure several typical portions, multiply by the number of feeding days per week, and divide the net weight printed on the package by that weekly amount. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a promised shelf life; discard food that has absorbed moisture or passed its labeled date.

Price, package size and availability

Aquariadise reported approximately US$10 for a 20 g container. A Singapore FishyHub/Faith Aquatics listing showed a 50 g package at SGD 15, and a marketplace result also showed a 50 g listing. These figures come from different package sizes, currencies, sellers and points in time, so they are not a like-for-like value comparison. Check current local stock, shipping, currency conversion, seller identity and net weight before deciding whether the price is reasonable.

Listing or report Size and price What you can and cannot conclude
Aquariadise review, updated March 2026 About US$10 for 20 g Source-specific historical report; price may have changed.
FishyHub/Faith Aquatics listing, accessed October 2026 50 g at SGD 15 Singapore listing; shipping, taxes and current stock can change.

Aqua Emporium’s catalog also lists Ebita Breed Jo Hinomaru Bentou among aquarium products, indicating that specialist aquarium retailers may be a buying route. No source verifies a manufacturer-direct store, a current marketplace seller, an Amazon listing or an affiliate relationship. Do not assume that a similarly named listing is authentic.

Buying and authenticity checklist

  • Match the spelling, product name and net weight on the listing to the physical package.
  • Ask for a clear photograph of the Japanese label, lot or date information and the sealed container.
  • Request a translation or manufacturer specification if the ingredient panel is important to your husbandry decisions.
  • Compare the total delivered cost, not just the sticker price; a 20 g and 50 g package cannot be compared without normalizing by weight.
  • Check storage instructions and reject food with a damaged seal, moisture, unusual odor or unexplained relabeling.
  • Keep the receipt and seller details until you have inspected the package and completed a cautious first feeding.

Pros and limitations for a shrimp keeper

Potential advantage What supports it Limitation
Small square pellet format Reported by the Aquariadise reviewer No standardized dimensions or manufacturer feeding chart were provided.
Shrimp readily gathered to eat Observed in one planted 30-gallon aquarium with red cherry and Amano shrimp Anecdotal, with no control food or independent replication.
Little visible clouding Reviewer’s observation over several weeks Water response changes with tank, dose and cleanup.
Specialist-retailer availability Listed by FishyHub/Faith Aquatics and Aqua Emporium; a marketplace result also exists Stock, sellers and prices are volatile; authenticity requires checking.
Potentially broad nutrient profile Retailer and review ingredient descriptions mention plant, animal and additive components The descriptions conflict and neither is verified as a definitive formula.

How it compares with your current shrimp food

Rather than choosing by hype, score Jo Hinomaru Bento against the food you already use. Give each option a simple assessment for five criteria: label transparency, shrimp acceptance, pellet control, water response and delivered cost per gram. The existing product may remain the better choice if it has a verified formula, predictable portions and proven compatibility with your water routine. Jo Hinomaru Bento becomes more compelling when your colony accepts the pellet, you can remove leftovers easily and the matched-weight price is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat an attractive feeding swarm as evidence that the food should become the sole diet. Shrimp naturally graze on biofilm and surfaces, and a varied routine can reduce the risk of relying on an unverified formulation. Change one food at a time so that any water-quality or appetite change has an identifiable cause.

Final assessment: is Jo Hinomaru Bento worth the hype?

It is worth a cautious trial for keepers who value a small pellet and want to observe feeding behavior in their own aquarium. The strongest positive evidence is a single reviewer’s report of good acceptance, intact pellets and little visible clouding. The main reasons for restraint are the conflicting ingredient descriptions, Japanese-only labeling reported by the reviewer, inconsistent package sizes and the absence of controlled comparisons or measured shrimp-health outcomes.

Buy the exact size you need from a seller that can show a sealed, traceable package. Follow the package directions, start with a small portion, remove leftovers and judge the food by your colony’s response and water parameters. That makes the purchase a measured husbandry experiment—not a promise that the product will improve molting, survival or breeding.
