Ed Lam’s Dragonflies of North America: Is This the Right Field Guide for You?

Ed Lam’s Dragonflies of North America uses more than 1,850 technical illustrations to identify 329 U.S. and Canadian dragonflies. Here are its scope, anatomy-focused strengths, limitations, and best uses.

Ed Lam’s Dragonflies of North America is an excellent identification guide for people who want to understand dragonfly structure, but it is not a complete Odonata guide. The book covers 329 dragonfly species recorded in the United States and Canada, excludes damselflies, and makes technical drawings—not photographs—the central identification tool. That combination is unusually good for learning wing, body, and structural differences, while its limits matter if you need Mexico coverage, damselfly identification, extensive behavior notes, or a very small field guide.

Donna L. Schulman’s 2025 review in 10,000 Birds describes a 448-page hardcover written and illustrated by Ed Lam, published by Princeton University Press in October 2024. The review reports more than 1,850 color illustrations and over 300 anatomical close-ups. This review explains what those features mean in practice, who will benefit most, and how to pair the book with local records and a second guide when necessary.

What this field guide is designed to do

Dragonflies of North America is an illustration-led reference for identifying adult dragonflies in the United States and Canada. Lam’s approach treats anatomy as the primary evidence. Species plates show male and female dorsal and side views, with additional drawings of wings and body parts. Captions point to the structures that separate similar species rather than merely presenting an attractive portrait.

Schulman’s review calls the drawings “the main text,” noting that captions identify significant features. That is the book’s defining editorial choice. A photograph can show color and posture as they appeared when the shutter clicked; a controlled drawing can isolate a diagnostic stripe, abdominal segment, wing mark, or appendage and show it at a useful scale. The result is a guide aimed at learning why an identification is correct, not only at matching an overall silhouette.

The book is therefore best understood as a dragonfly specialist’s guide for North American field work, with enough introductory material for a motivated beginner. It is not a general guide to every member of the order Odonata, and it does not replace a regional reference when a state, province, or Mexican locality has its own identification problems.

Coverage: 329 dragonflies, but no damselflies

Geographic scope

The review reports coverage of 329 dragonfly species in the United States and Canada. “North America” in this title should not be read as a promise of full continental coverage: Mexico is outside the stated scope. A reader who travels or lives south of the United States–Mexico border will need a regional source that treats local species and distributions directly.

Within the United States and Canada, the broad geographic coverage is useful for travelers and for readers who move between regions. It also means that an account may include species unlikely to occur near your home. Local expertise remains important because a continental treatment cannot replace knowledge of a particular watershed, mountain range, prairie, or coastal habitat.

Taxonomic scope

Only dragonflies are covered. Damselflies are excluded, so the book is a poor sole choice for a pond survey, bioblitz, or nature journal that records all Odonata. Dragonflies and damselflies often occur together, and an observer who carries only this volume may be able to identify one group while leaving the other unidentified. Plan on a second guide or a current local resource if both groups are part of your goal.

Season and distribution information

Each species account includes a range map, a written distribution statement, and likely months of occurrence. These are starting points for planning a search, not guarantees that an insect will be present on a particular date. Schulman emphasizes that many dragonflies are habitat-specific. A shaded portion of a map can cover a large area in which the required stream, marsh, lake margin, seep, or other habitat is absent.

Use the map to ask a narrower question: does suitable habitat exist in the mapped region, and is the flight window plausible for today’s weather and elevation? For unusual records, consult current local observations. The review notes that knowledge continues to develop as observers submit records to resources such as iNaturalist and Odonata Central.

How the identification system works

Technical drawings instead of photographic plates

Lam’s drawings present both sexes in dorsal and side views. That matters because sexual dimorphism can change the useful characters: a male’s abdomen, a female’s coloration, and the shape of terminal appendages may not provide the same visual cues. Side views help with body profile and abdominal patterning, while dorsal views make wing arrangement and top-of-body markings easier to compare.

Additional wing and body details let you examine structures that are easy to miss in a live, moving insect. The captions direct attention to those details, turning the plate into an explanation. For a learner, this can build a repeatable habit: observe the whole insect first, then check the particular character that separates the likely candidates.

Species-account contents

According to Schulman’s review, species accounts provide:

  • Common and scientific names.
  • Size information.
  • Overall appearance.
  • Habitat.
  • Identification features highlighted in the text and captions.
  • Similar species to consider.
  • A range map and written distribution.
  • Likely months of occurrence.

Account layouts expand when a species has subspecies or multiple forms that need additional treatment. That variation is functional: a page with more forms may be denser, but it prevents a complex identification from being forced into the same space as a straightforward one.

The “In-Hand Characters” section

The guide includes an “In-Hand Characters” section with more than 300 anatomical close-ups. This is aimed at difficult identifications in which a broad color pattern is insufficient. Close views can support examination of small structures when an observer has a safely restrained specimen or a high-resolution image, and they can also serve as a study reference before going into the field.

“In-hand” should not be interpreted as a direction to capture every dragonfly. Handling is a specialized practice with welfare, legal, and conservation implications. The section’s greatest value for many readers will be educational: it shows which structures experts inspect and helps connect the simplified field plate to the anatomy underneath.

What you learn before the species accounts

Ten short opening chapters establish the vocabulary and workflow used later in the book. Schulman lists chapters on the dragonfly life cycle, anatomy, finding and identifying dragonflies, families, identification basics, and catching and collecting. Family and genus introductions add shared information about physical traits, behavior, and habitat.

This front matter makes the guide more than an alphabetical lookup book. A beginner can start with broad questions—what kind of habitat to search, how families differ, and which body parts deserve attention—before attempting a species-level identification. An experienced observer can use the same pages as a refresher when moving into an unfamiliar family.

Where the book is strongest

Learning structural differences

The strongest case for this guide is the person who repeatedly reaches a pair of similar-looking species and wants to know what to inspect next. The combination of male and female views, side and dorsal perspectives, enlarged details, and explanatory captions gives that reader a visual checklist. Instead of memorizing a color impression that changes with light, age, or wear, you can learn a structural character that remains useful across observations.

Building identification confidence

Because each account names similar species, the guide encourages comparison rather than premature certainty. A responsible identification is not simply “this looks blue”; it is “these candidate species occur here, this habitat fits, the season is plausible, and the illustrated diagnostic character agrees.” The book supports that chain of reasoning, especially when paired with a photograph or written field notes.

Studying away from the field

The 448-page format offers room for substantial illustration and anatomy. It can function as a home reference for reviewing images, preparing for a trip, or learning a family before visiting a wetland. The trade-off is physical size: a 5.5-by-8.5-inch volume is more substantial than a pocket booklet, and its suitability for carrying all day depends on your pack and field habits.

Supporting both sexes and difficult forms

Including male and female views helps when the individual in front of you does not match the most familiar internet photograph. Extra space for subspecies or forms acknowledges that variation can affect the visual decision. The guide does not make every identification easy, but it gives you more of the relevant evidence in one place.

Limits you should plan around

No damselflies and no Mexico coverage

The two biggest scope limits are explicit: damselflies are absent, and the stated geographic coverage is the United States and Canada. If your regular outings include mixed Odonata or Mexican localities, buy or borrow a complementary regional guide before relying on this book as your only reference.

No glossary

Schulman notes that the book has no glossary. The opening anatomy and identification chapters provide context, but a reader who encounters an unfamiliar technical term may need to look it up elsewhere or infer its meaning from the illustrations. Beginners can reduce friction by keeping a separate anatomy reference or a trusted current resource available during study sessions.

Limited flight-pattern treatment

The review finds relatively little discussion of flight patterns in individual species accounts. That matters because behavior in the air—hovering, gliding, patrolling, perching, or repeatedly returning to a route—can be a useful first clue when an insect will not settle. Lam’s guide emphasizes diagnostic structure, so use behavioral observations as a supplementary filter rather than expecting every account to provide a detailed flight profile.

Maps require habitat interpretation

A broad range map can create false confidence if it is read as a presence map. The review specifically cautions that habitat specialization means a species may occupy only a small fraction of the colored area. Combine the map with the account’s habitat description, local weather, elevation, water conditions, and recent observations.

Short resources list

The resources list is brief. That keeps the book focused, but it gives less direction to readers who want a large trail of specialized literature, online databases, or historical treatments. For current records and taxonomy, supplement the printed book with active regional recording communities and updated databases.

How it compares with other guide types

The right alternative depends on the identification problem you actually face. Schulman’s review names Dennis Paulson’s eastern and western guides and regional guides by Kathy Biggs, John C. Abbott, Giff Beaton, and Blair Nikula. The comparison below reflects the distinctions described in that review; it is not a new side-by-side test of every book.

Reader need Why Lam’s guide may fit When another guide type may be better
One reference for dragonflies across the United States and Canada Its stated coverage reaches 329 dragonfly species across both countries. A regional guide may be easier to carry and may give more local detail.
Dragonflies and damselflies together It offers detailed dragonfly identification. Choose a guide whose stated taxonomic scope includes both groups.
Learning fine anatomy Technical drawings, captions, and more than 300 anatomical close-ups emphasize structure. A photographic guide may better show color and appearance under photographic conditions.
Behavior and feeding natural history Family and genus introductions provide some behavioral context. Schulman says Paulson’s books offer more treatment of subjects such as feeding behavior.
Local state or provincial specialization The broad account format gives a useful continental baseline. Regional guides by Biggs, Abbott, Beaton, or Nikula may fit a specific area more closely.
Very light travel The 5.5-by-8.5-inch format is manageable for some packs. A compact regional booklet or digital guide may be preferable when weight and speed matter most.

Do not choose between drawings and photographs as if one medium is universally superior. Drawings can clarify a small structural difference; photographs can communicate real-world coloration, posture, and lighting. Many serious observers use both, consulting the drawing to understand the character and a photograph or their own image to check how that character appears on a live insect.

A practical field workflow using the book

The guide works best as part of an observation process rather than as a last-second picture-matching exercise. The following sequence keeps the broad evidence separate from the final structural check.

  1. Record the setting first. Note the date, approximate time, weather, elevation if known, and habitat type. Write whether you are beside a pond, slow stream, marsh, seep, lake edge, forest opening, or another environment. Habitat narrows the candidate list before you study tiny marks.
  2. Observe without disturbing the insect. Watch where it perches, how it patrols, whether it returns to the same location, and whether it flies low over water or through vegetation. Flight behavior is useful context even though the individual accounts contain relatively little dedicated flight-pattern treatment.
  3. Get the broad appearance. Estimate size, body shape, dominant colors, wing posture, and visible patterns. If possible, photograph the insect from more than one angle. A single backlit image can hide exactly the feature you later need.
  4. Check geographic and seasonal plausibility. Look at the range map, written distribution, and likely months in the relevant account. Treat the result as a probability filter, not proof of presence. A mapped species still needs suitable habitat.
  5. Compare similar species. Read the account’s similar-species notes before settling on a name. Make a short list of two or three candidates and identify the character that should separate them.
  6. Use the correct view. Compare your image or field sketch with both dorsal and side drawings. A side view may reveal body profile that is invisible from above; a dorsal view may make a wing or abdominal pattern easier to evaluate.
  7. Follow the caption to the structure. Use the arrows and explanatory text to locate the diagnostic feature. The point is not to count matching colors but to verify the character the guide identifies as significant.
  8. Check sex and variation. Compare male and female plates and read any notes about subspecies or forms. Do not discard a plausible identification because it does not resemble the most familiar male image.
  9. Document uncertainty. If the key character is hidden, the photograph is poor, or the range is unusual, record the insect at the highest defensible level and seek a second opinion. A careful “dragonfly, genus uncertain” is better than a confident but unsupported species name.
  10. Review after the outing. Use the “In-Hand Characters” plates and your photographs at home, when you can enlarge details without rushing. Compare your notes with current local records if the observation would be unusual or important.

Binoculars, cameras, and observing tools

The reviewed material discusses what kind of binoculars to buy and how to photograph dragonflies as part of its introductory guidance, but it does not identify a specific model or establish a single best specification. That means your choice should follow your observation style rather than a brand or a number supplied here.

For binoculars, prioritize comfortable close focusing, a steady view, and a weight you will actually carry. Dragonflies often remain at a distance or move quickly, so a stable image and patience can matter more than a nominal magnification increase. For photography, aim for several useful frames: a side view, a dorsal view, and a habitat image. Leave room around the insect so the wing tips and abdomen are not cropped; those edges may become important when you consult the drawings.

Use the book’s anatomy plates to decide what your image needs to show. If the relevant character is on the side of the abdomen, another top-down photograph will not solve the problem. Avoid chasing an insect solely to improve a picture; repeated disturbance can deprive it of resting and feeding opportunities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Catching and collecting: read the chapter responsibly

The opening material includes catching and collecting, but the presence of that chapter is not blanket permission to capture dragonflies. Regulations vary by jurisdiction, protected areas may impose additional restrictions, and handling can injure delicate wings or appendages. Before collecting, verify the rules that apply to the exact location and understand why a specimen is necessary.

For most observers, noncontact methods—careful watching, photography, and written records—are sufficient. If a permitted study requires handling, minimize time out of the insect’s normal environment, avoid damaging the wings, and follow established entomological practice. The guide’s “In-Hand Characters” section should be treated as an anatomy reference, not an invitation to handle every individual you encounter.

Keeping printed information current

Printed range maps and seasonal windows are valuable baselines, but dragonfly records change as observers document new local occurrences and refine identifications. Schulman points to iNaturalist and Odonata Central as examples of resources receiving current observations. Use those platforms to check recent activity, while remembering that an online record still deserves scrutiny for image quality, location accuracy, and identification confidence.

When a record would be consequential—far outside the expected range, very early or late in the season, or important to a conservation project—seek confirmation from experienced local observers or a regional authority. The book gives you a structured way to inspect the specimen; current records tell you whether the result fits what is known now.

Who should buy it?

Strong match

  • Observers who want one dragonfly-focused reference for the United States and Canada.
  • Learners who find technical drawings easier to study than photographs alone.
  • Naturalists willing to compare similar species and learn anatomical characters.
  • Photographers who want to understand which views and structures to capture.
  • Experienced watchers adding a broad continental reference to a local guide.

Look for a companion instead

  • Anyone who needs damselflies in the same volume.
  • Readers whose primary field area is Mexico.
  • Observers who require a very small, lightweight outing guide.
  • Readers seeking extensive behavior, feeding ecology, or a large resource bibliography.
  • Beginners who want a glossary built into the same book and do not want to consult outside references.

Buying and edition checks

The hardcover ISBN-13 reported by the review is 978-0691232874, and an ebook version is also reported. Use the ISBN and full title when checking a library or retailer so that you do not confuse this book with another work using “Dragonflies of North America” in its listing.

The review does not establish a current price, inventory status, or retailer listing. Confirm whether you are viewing the October 2024 Princeton University Press edition, which format is being offered, and whether the listing is new, used, or digital before purchasing. An ebook can be convenient for searching and enlarging illustrations; a hardcover may be preferable for repeated use near water or in a field pack where a screen is impractical.

Bottom line

Choose Dragonflies of North America if your priority is learning how to identify dragonflies through illustrated anatomy across the United States and Canada. Its 329-species scope, male and female views, explanatory captions, and extensive close-ups make it unusually strong for structural study. Do not make it your only Odonata book if you need damselflies, Mexico, a highly portable format, or more extensive behavior and glossary support. Pair it with a local guide and current observation records, and it becomes a powerful reference rather than an all-purpose answer to every dragonfly question.
