If you want an Egyptian-inspired name with a clear historical connection to cats, Bastet is the strongest choice: she was a goddess associated with cats and the city of Bubastis. For more options, this guide separates that documented history from creative names inspired by Egyptian mythology. Those invented suggestions may suit your cat, but they are not presented as verified ancient Egyptian names or translations.

What makes an Egyptian cat name historically grounded?

The surviving evidence supports a small number of meaningful connections, not a verified inventory of 100 ancient Egyptian cat names. Museum sources document Bastet’s feline associations and cat figures used in religious contexts; they do not establish that every Egyptian-sounding name on a modern list is ancient or has a particular translation.

The Global Egyptian Museum describes Bastet as a cat goddess, probably originally a lion goddess, and connects her to Bubastis in the Nile Delta. It explains that the Egyptian term per bastet means “House (or sanctuary) of Bastet.” That explanation applies to per bastet, not as a literal translation of the place name Bubastis or as a translation of Bastet’s personal name. Global Egyptian Museum: “Bastet”.

Bastet’s imagery also shifted over time: the Global Egyptian Museum says Old Kingdom depictions nearly always showed her with a lioness head, while later traditions more often regarded her as a cat. The British Museum associates her with cats, fertility, childbirth, joy, dance, and protection. These are associations with the goddess, not meanings of her name. British Museum: Egyptian sculpture.

Historically supported names and references

Bastet

Best for: a cat whose name should have a direct, documented feline connection. Bastet is the clearest choice in the sources used here. The name evokes a goddess associated with cats and protection, as well as joy, dance, fertility, and childbirth in the British Museum’s educational summary. None of those associations should be mistaken for a literal name translation.

Bubastis

Best for: a formal-sounding place-name reference. Bubastis is historically connected with Bastet; the Global Egyptian Museum identifies it as her city. It is a place name, not a personal name meaning “cat.” A natural household option is to use Bubastis as the full name and a shorter call name of your own choosing.

Bastet-inspired names

Best for: a personal variation that keeps the historical reference recognizable. You could use Bastet as the formal name and choose a nickname such as “Bas” or “Basti.” Those nicknames are modern household choices, not attested ancient names or translations.

Why cats appear in Egyptian religious history

Cat imagery was more than decoration. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes cat statuettes dedicated at temples or placed in catacombs with cat mummies, including at Bubastis and Saqqara. One cat statuette in the Met collection is dated to the Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 664–30 BCE; that date belongs to the object, not to every Egyptian cat figure or to Bastet’s name. The Metropolitan Museum of Art: cat statuette.

This ritual context helps explain why Bastet is a fitting reference for a cat. It does not mean a modern pet name was used in antiquity, or that every ancient cat figure represented the goddess in the same way.

Scarab Distinctive, playful For a small, busy explorer; a recognizable ancient-Egyptian-themed image, not a translation.
Sphinx Bold, memorable For a watchful or mysterious cat; evokes monumental imagery rather than a documented cat name.
Delta Simple, place-inspired For a cat with a relaxed, flowing presence; refers to the river-delta setting, not a personal name from the sources.
Moonstone Soft, imaginative For a quiet or nocturnal cat; a modern celestial image.
Pharaoh Grand, playful For a cat who seems to rule the household; a title-inspired choice, not a cat’s historical name.
River Easy, nature-inspired For a relaxed cat or one drawn to water; a contemporary choice inspired by Egypt’s landscape.
Golden Warm, descriptive For a golden-coated cat; an English descriptive name rather than an Egyptian word.

How to choose a name you’ll use every day

  • Decide how much history you want. Choose Bastet for the strongest documented cat connection, Bubastis for a place-name reference, or a modern idea if sound and style matter more than historical authenticity.
  • Try the name aloud. Say it in the situations where you will call your cat. A short everyday nickname can make a longer formal name easier to use.
  • Keep meaning claims honest. If a name is an imaginative choice, describe it as inspired by Egyptian mythology or imagery rather than assigning it an unverified translation.
  • Check unfamiliar spellings before choosing them. The sources here do not verify a broad set of Egyptian vocabulary or deity names. For a name beyond Bastet and Bubastis, consult a specialist linguistic or museum reference before stating a specific meaning.
