What does an Egyptian Mau look like?
The Egyptian Mau has a compact, well-muscled body built for acceleration and jumping. TICA and CFA both describe a medium-sized active cat with a spotted pattern that occurs naturally rather than being produced solely by selective markings or grooming. Spots can vary in shape and arrangement, so a few visible spots do not prove breed identity.
Distinctive structure
TICA’s profile highlights a brow and eye set that give the face an alert expression, plus a loose skin flap running from the ribcage toward the hind leg. The hind legs are proportionally longer than the front legs, producing the characteristic “tiptoe” stance. These details help judges evaluate a breed-standard cat, but they are not a reliable stand-alone test for an unregistered cat.

Eyes and overall impression
The green “gooseberry” eye color is especially associated with the Mau in TICA’s description. Combined with the spotted coat, muscular frame, and longer rear legs, it creates a recognizable athletic silhouette. Breed-standard language is intended for identification and judging; pedigree papers and a registry record are needed to establish that a cat is a registered Egyptian Mau.
Where did the Egyptian Mau come from?
Registry histories connect the modern American breeding program to three Maus brought from Italy to the United States in 1956 by Nathalie Troubetskoy, with Richard Gebhardt’s help. CFA likewise states that three cats traveled with Troubetskoy when she emigrated in 1956.

Both organizations discuss ancient Egyptian depictions and possible origins. Those narratives are historical interpretations from the registries, not conclusive genetic proof that every modern Mau descends directly from a particular ancient population.

What is an Egyptian Mau’s temperament?
TICA describes the Mau as gentle, extremely loyal, and strongly attached to its family. Many are playful and energetic at home while remaining wary of unfamiliar people. This combination can feel rewarding to an owner who wants a devoted companion, but it may be challenging if the household expects every cat to greet visitors immediately.
Family relationships
Maus can fit families with children and other cat-friendly pets when those companions can keep up with the cat’s energy and respect its boundaries. Climbing and jumping
A sturdy cat tree, wall-mounted perch, or another secure elevated station gives the Mau a permitted place to climb. Anchor tall equipment so it cannot tip, check platforms regularly, and keep launch points away from fragile objects. TICA specifically recommends a perch or cat tree; it does not require a particular brand, size, or design.
Play and mental stimulation
Use interactive toys that let the cat stalk and catch, rotate toys to preserve interest, and finish vigorous sessions with a small meal or calm rest period. Maus may enjoy playing with water. TICA describes the Egyptian Mau as generally healthy and gives a life-expectancy range of 10–15+ years. The range appears on TICA’s live breed profile without a stated publication year, so it should be treated as a general breed estimate rather than a promise for an individual cat.
Predispositions named in the breed profile
- Urolithiasis: urinary stones or stone formation are listed as a breed predisposition.
- Pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK-Def): an inherited disorder included in TICA’s list of concerns.
- Leukodystrophy: TICA notes that signs may appear in kittens as early as seven weeks.
Being listed as a predisposition does not mean that every Mau will develop one of these conditions. Watch for changes in appetite, drinking, urination, mobility, energy, or behavior and contact a veterinarian promptly when something is abnormal. CFA describes the breed as healthy and recommends asking breeders about health history in their lines. A breeder should be able to explain the records they keep; do not treat a verbal guarantee as a diagnosis or as proof of risk-free ancestry.
Routine veterinary planning
Arrange preventive examinations, vaccinations, parasite control, dental assessment, and any testing your veterinarian considers appropriate for the individual cat. Kittens, seniors, and cats with symptoms may need a different schedule from a healthy adult. How can you find an Egyptian Mau breeder?
Both TICA and CFA maintain breeder-finding resources through their breed organizations. TICA says members listed through its resource have signed its Code of Ethics. That statement describes the listing requirement; it does not establish current kitten availability or guarantee the practices of a particular breeder.
Questions to ask before reserving a kitten
- Can you see the kitten with its mother and littermates in the place where it was raised?
- What veterinary examinations, vaccinations, parasite treatments, and identification records will accompany the kitten?
- What health problems have occurred in this breeder’s lines, including urinary disease, PK-Def, or leukodystrophy?
- How are kittens socialized to handling, household sounds, carriers, children, and other animals?
- What written contract, return policy, and ongoing support are provided?
- Can the breeder show registration or pedigree documentation that identifies the cat as an Egyptian Mau?
Review records directly, verify names and dates, and be cautious if a seller will not answer basic health and socialization questions. A responsible directory listing is a starting point for due diligence, not a substitute for it.
Is my adopted cat an Egyptian Mau?
A spotted coat, green eyes, a tiptoe stance, or a friendly personality can make a shelter cat resemble a Mau, but appearance alone cannot confirm breed. Without pedigree documentation, describe the cat accurately as a spotted domestic cat or a Mau-type cat rather than asserting registered status. A veterinarian can assess general health and physical traits, while a registry or documented lineage is needed for formal breed identification. DNA tests may provide estimates, but the breed profiles themselves do not establish a DNA test as definitive.

Is an Egyptian Mau right for your household?
