In the United States, an Egyptian Mau costs about $800–$2,500 from a breeder or $50–$200 through adoption. PetMD places a companion-kitten purchase at $1,000–$2,000. Ownership is separate from the purchase price: published monthly estimates range from $55–$175 to approximately $160–$590 because they count different combinations of food, litter, insurance, veterinary care and enrichment.
Use the purchase figures as planning ranges, not guaranteed quotes. Egyptian Mau availability is limited, and the final price depends on location, pedigree, age, color, registration, purpose and the veterinary work or supplies included in the sale.

Egyptian Mau price at a glance
The following figures are current published estimates for the regions and purposes stated. They should not be averaged into one “true” price because each source uses different assumptions.
| Source and date | Purchase or ownership estimate | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Catster, 2026 | $50–$2,500 to acquire; $50–$200 adoption; $800–$2,500 breeder; $55–$175 per month | U.S. ranges covering adoption, breeder purchases and a lower monthly budget estimate |
| PetMD, current page accessed 2026 | $1,000–$2,000 | Estimated price for a companion Egyptian Mau kitten |
| PDSA, current page accessed 2026 | £500 average purchase cost; £13,600–£15,800 lifetime cost | United Kingdom figures, with an expected 12–14-year average lifespan |
| The Vet Desk, 2026 | Approximately $160–$590 per month | A higher U.S. monthly-expense estimate using broader or more expensive ongoing assumptions |
The broadest U.S. acquisition range, $50–$2,500, combines adoption and breeder channels. It is not evidence that a pedigreed kitten from a reputable breeder normally costs $50. Conversely, a $2,500 quote does not automatically prove superior quality; documentation, health practices and the sales contract matter.

Why Egyptian Mau prices vary so widely
Egyptian Maus are relatively uncommon. Limited availability can mean fewer local litters, transportation costs and longer waits for a kitten. The breed is also defined by more than a spotted coat. The Cat Fanciers’ Association describes it as “the only natural domesticated breed of spotted cat.” A spotted domestic shorthair may look similar without having an Egyptian Mau pedigree.
Pedigree and registration
A breeder who can document parentage through an established registry is offering something different from an unverified spotted cat. Registration, transfer paperwork and a written pedigree may be included in the price or charged separately. Ask which organization registered the litter and whether you will receive the documents in your name.
Color and show potential
Color categories recognized by major registries include silver, bronze and smoke. Within a litter, pricing can differ by color, markings, conformation and whether the kitten is sold as a companion, show prospect or breeding prospect. A show or breeding price is not a guarantee of future ribbons or breeding success; it reflects the seller’s assessment and contract terms at the time of sale.

Kittens may cost more than adults, while retired breeding cats can be priced differently from kittens. Prices also reflect regional demand and travel. Compare what is included: registration, vaccinations, deworming, sterilization, microchipping, health examinations, delivery and starter supplies can materially change the amount you pay at pickup.
Breeder, rescue or shelter: which route costs less?
Buying from a breeder
Catster’s 2026 U.S. estimate for a breeder Egyptian Mau is $800–$2,500. PetMD’s $1,000–$2,000 companion-kitten estimate sits inside that interval. A responsible breeder should be able to explain the kitten’s lineage, socialization, veterinary care and placement terms before taking a deposit.

Breeder pricing is usually the route with the clearest pedigree documentation, but it can also involve waiting-list deposits, transportation and a contract that limits breeding or requires the cat to be returned to the breeder if you can no longer keep it. Read those obligations before paying.
Rescue or shelter adoption
Catster reports $50–$200 for adoption in the United States. Adoption fees commonly help cover some shelter or rescue services, but the exact inclusions differ by organization. Confirm whether the cat has been examined, vaccinated, sterilized, microchipped and tested for conditions relevant to its history, and ask for copies of the records.
Rescues may identify a cat as an Egyptian Mau mix or as “Mau-type” when pedigree papers are unavailable. Treat that description honestly: the lower fee can make adoption an excellent value, but appearance alone does not establish a registered purebred.
Comparing the two routes
| Consideration | Breeder | Rescue or shelter |
|---|---|---|
| Published U.S. acquisition range | $800–$2,500 from Catster; $1,000–$2,000 companion estimate from PetMD | $50–$200 from Catster |
| Pedigree certainty | Should be supported by registration and pedigree documents; verify them | Often unknown unless records accompany the cat |
| Age availability | Usually planned kitten placements, with some adults | Often adults or older kittens; availability is unpredictable |
| What may be included | May include vaccinations, sterilization, microchip, registration and a contract; confirm each item | May include some veterinary work; confirm the organization’s actual package |
| Main financial risk | Deposits, travel and add-on services can raise the quoted price | Lower fee can be followed by veterinary or diagnostic costs if records are incomplete |
Companion, show or breeding quality
Decide the cat’s purpose before comparing quotes. A companion placement is intended for life as a pet and may include a sterilization requirement. A show prospect is evaluated against a breed standard, while a breeding prospect requires appropriate registration, health information and a contract that permits breeding.
Do not pay a breeding or show premium without seeing the written terms. Check whether registration is open or limited, whether breeding rights transfer, what health guarantees cover, and what happens if the kitten develops a disqualifying condition. A higher price should correspond to specific, documented rights or services rather than vague claims such as “rare” or “top quality.”

How to verify that an Egyptian Mau is genuine
Established registries maintain breeder directories and define the recognized breed standard. The Cat Fanciers’ Association and The International Cat Association are useful starting points for locating registered breeders. A directory listing is not a substitute for your own checks, but it is safer than relying on a social-media advertisement or a coat photo.

- Match the paperwork to the kitten. Confirm the microchip number, sex, date of birth and color on the contract and veterinary records.
- Review health records. Check dates and product names for vaccinations, deworming, examinations and sterilization. Ask what health conditions the breeder screens for and what the written guarantee actually covers.
- Read the contract before paying. Look for deposit-refund rules, delivery responsibility, registration limits, sterilization deadlines, return requirements and any mandatory veterinary follow-up.
- Verify the seller independently. Use registry directories, request references where appropriate and be cautious if the seller refuses a video call, avoids questions about the parents or pressures you to pay immediately.
The CFA cautions that cats advertised as Egyptian Maus without proven pedigree may not meet the recognized breed definition. A spotted pattern is evidence of appearance, not ancestry.
One-time setup costs before the cat arrives
The purchase price is only the first payment. Prepare the essentials before pickup so you do not have to make rushed purchases or transport an unprepared kitten.
- Food and water bowls: Choose stable, easy-to-clean bowls and ask the breeder or rescue what food the cat is already eating.
- Carrier: A secure cat carrier is required for the trip home and future veterinary visits. Confirm that it is large enough for the adult cat, has reliable fasteners and can be cleaned.
- Litter box and litter: Start with the litter type the cat knows, then change gradually if necessary. A second box is useful in a larger home or a home with multiple floors.
- Scratching and climbing equipment: A sturdy scratching post, perch or cat tree protects household furniture and gives an athletic cat safe vertical space.
- Toys and grooming tools: Provide interactive toys, lightweight chase toys and a brush suited to the coat. Rotate toys rather than leaving every item out at once.
- Identification and safety: Confirm the microchip registration and use a breakaway identification collar if appropriate. Check windows, balconies, doors and toxic plants before allowing exploration.
These items are setup expenses, not a recurring monthly average. Their replacement schedule depends on wear, the cat’s behavior and the quality of the equipment.
Monthly Egyptian Mau ownership costs
Published monthly estimates differ enough that a single average would mislead you. Catster reports $55–$175 per month, while The Vet Desk reports approximately $160–$590. The gap can arise when a budget counts only routine food and litter versus one that also allocates for insurance, preventive and unexpected veterinary care, higher-priced diets, replacement supplies and enrichment.

| Monthly category | What to include in your budget | Why your amount may change |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Complete food appropriate to the cat’s age, health and feeding plan | Wet, dry or mixed feeding; prescription diets; portion size and local prices |
| Litter | Litter and waste-liner or cleaning supplies | Number of boxes, litter type, household size and how often boxes are emptied |
| Routine veterinary care | Annual examinations, vaccinations and parasite prevention allocated across the year | Age, health status, local clinic fees and the preventive schedule recommended by your veterinarian |
| Insurance | Optional monthly premium or a self-funded emergency reserve | Country, cat age, deductible, reimbursement limit, exclusions and pre-existing-condition rules |
| Enrichment and replacement items | Toys, scratching surfaces and occasional grooming or cleaning supplies | An active cat may wear out toys or need more climbing and play equipment |
| Unplanned care | A separate emergency fund rather than assuming the monthly estimate covers every event | Illness, injury, dental treatment and diagnostics can create irregular bills |
TICA describes the Egyptian Mau as active, playful and athletic. Plan for daily interactive play and safe exercise, not just food and litter. Enrichment spending can be modest when toys are rotated and play is regular, but it should not be omitted from a realistic budget.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.First-year and lifetime planning
Your first year combines the acquisition fee, setup equipment and the highest likelihood of one-time veterinary or administrative charges. Ask the seller exactly which vaccinations, sterilization, microchip, registration and transport services are already included so you can identify what remains.
For a long-term view, PDSA lists an average Egyptian Mau lifespan of 12–14 years and estimates a United Kingdom lifetime cost of £13,600–£15,800. Those are UK figures and should not be converted mechanically into a U.S. dollar budget: food, veterinary prices, insurance, taxes and currency exchange differ. They do demonstrate why a low adoption fee does not equal low total ownership cost.
Build your own forecast by separating predictable monthly spending from annual care and an emergency reserve. Revisit it when the cat changes life stage, develops a medical condition or requires a different diet. Keep a record of actual food, litter and veterinary spending for the first three months; that is more useful for your household than a generic national average.
Geography and currency: do not mix the estimates
The $50–$2,500 acquisition figures and the two U.S. monthly ranges are stated in U.S. dollars. PDSA’s £500 average purchase cost and £13,600–£15,800 lifetime estimate are for the United Kingdom. A breeder in another country may quote a different currency and may add import permits, transportation, quarantine or border veterinary requirements.

When comparing an overseas kitten with a local one, request an itemized delivered price. Include travel, a compliant carrier, required certificates, taxes or customs charges and the cost of a veterinarian visit after arrival. A lower sticker price can disappear once those obligations are added.
Questions to ask before paying a deposit
- What is the kitten’s registered name, registration number and documented ancestry?
- Is the placement for companion, show or breeding purposes, and what rights does the contract grant?
- Which vaccinations, examinations, deworming, sterilization, microchip and registration fees are included?
- What health guarantee is written into the contract, for how long, and what documentation is required to make a claim?
- Can you meet the mother and see where the kittens are raised, in person or by live video?
- What food, litter and routine does the kitten currently use?
- What is the deposit, when is it refundable, and under what circumstances can either party cancel?
- What is the return policy if your circumstances change or a veterinarian finds a serious problem?
Common price traps and how to avoid them
Paying for appearance without proof
A silver or bronze spotted coat can be attractive, but color does not establish breed. Require pedigree documentation before paying a purebred premium.
Comparing an all-inclusive quote with a bare fee
One seller may include sterilization, microchipping, vaccinations and delivery; another may charge for each. Put every inclusion and extra charge in writing and compare the delivered totals.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming a low fee means low risk
An adoption fee may be modest while follow-up dental, diagnostic or emergency care is expensive. Ask for records and keep an emergency reserve regardless of acquisition route.
Ignoring the contract
Limited registration, mandatory sterilization, return-to-breeder clauses and health guarantees affect both your rights and future costs. Read the complete agreement before sending money.
Budgeting only for food
Routine care, litter, insurance or savings, carriers, scratching equipment and enrichment are all part of responsible ownership. The monthly estimates above differ largely because these categories are not counted identically.
Bottom line for a 2026 budget
For a U.S. buyer, reserve $800–$2,500 for a breeder Egyptian Mau or $50–$200 for adoption, then verify what the fee includes. Use $1,000–$2,000 as PetMD’s companion-kitten planning range rather than a guaranteed quote. For ongoing care, compare your own itemized plan with Catster’s $55–$175 monthly estimate and The Vet Desk’s approximately $160–$590 estimate; neither replaces a household-specific food, litter, veterinary and emergency budget. The safest purchase is the one supported by verifiable pedigree or honest rescue records, a clear contract and enough financial capacity for the cat’s entire life.
