It can thrive in a peaceful planted aquarium when the tank is mature, warm, clean and closely monitored. Start with a cycled aquarium of about 20 US gallons (80 L) for a pair, use an adjustable heater and thermometer, and choose calm tank mates that tolerate the same warm-water conditions.
Published care sheets disagree on exact temperature, hardness, adult size and lifespan. Those figures describe different contexts, and some are for the species or German Blue Ram rather than this exact morph. The practical priority is stable water, regular testing, varied small foods and enough territory for a pair to retreat and defend during spawning.

What is an electric blue ram?
The electric blue ram is a color form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, a small South American cichlid associated with the Orinoco Basin. The 2023 breeding paper describes the wild range as the llanos of Venezuela and Colombia. Its vivid blue appearance is the result of selective breeding; it should not be treated as a naturally occurring wild color form.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe morph is attractive but is often considered less forgiving than a robust, wild-type fish. Aquarium Industries states: “It is slightly more difficult to keep, as selective breeding has made it more sensitive to poor water quality.” That does not mean every specimen is fragile, but it does mean that an established aquarium and regular monitoring matter more than chasing a single “perfect” number.

Adult size and expected lifespan
Size estimates vary because publishers use different definitions of typical and maximum length, and because individual fish and sex can differ. Use the figures below as planning ranges rather than promises.
| Source and context | Reported size or lifespan | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Aquarium Industries care sheet (2014) | Maximum 4–6 cm; lifespan 4–5 years | Maximum-size and lifespan guidance for its ramirezi care sheet |
| Fluval German Blue Ram profile (circa 2022) | Maximum 2.5 in / 6 cm | Maximum length for a closely related color form, not a guarantee for every electric-blue specimen |
| Aquarium Source guide (September 2026) | Typical adult around 1.5 in; some specimens approaching 3 in; lifespan 3–4 years | Separates a commonly observed adult size from larger individuals |
For stocking and aquascaping, plan around a small cichlid of roughly 4–6 cm (about 2–2.4 inches) at the upper end, while allowing for occasional larger fish. Lifespan figures are publisher estimates, not outcomes that an aquarium can guarantee; genetics, water quality, diet, disease and stress all influence longevity.
Water temperature and chemistry
Sources report different ranges because they describe different populations, care philosophies and purposes. Aquarium Industries gives a general range of 24–28°C, pH 5.0–7.2 and general hardness of 50–150 ppm. Fluval’s German Blue Ram profile lists 26–29°C, pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness of 1–12 dH. The 2023 breeding article describes wild-range conditions of 27–30°C and pH 5.0–6.0, then recommends 26–30°C for captive breeding, preferably 28°C, with pH 6.5–7.0 and 1–8 dGH.

| Parameter | Published guidance | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–28°C (Aquarium Industries); 26–29°C (Fluval German Blue Ram); 26–30°C, preferably 28°C, for captive breeding (ABAH Bioflux, 2023) | Keep the aquarium consistently warm. A stable value in the overlapping warm range is more useful than frequent adjustments. |
| pH | 5.0–7.2; 6.0–7.0; 6.5–7.0 for the breeding setup | Avoid abrupt swings. Match the fish’s established water when possible rather than forcing a dramatic change. |
| Hardness | 50–150 ppm general hardness; 1–12 dH; 1–8 dGH for breeding | Soft to moderately soft water is the common theme, but test your source water and make changes gradually. |
These ranges are not interchangeable guarantees. The most defensible target for a community aquarium is warm, clean, stable water within the range your fish has been acclimated to. Test regularly with a freshwater test kit, especially after adding fish, changing filtration or altering water chemistry. An appropriately sized adjustable aquarium heater and a separate thermometer let you control and verify temperature rather than relying on the heater setting alone.
Tank size and habitat design
Fluval lists 20 US gallons (80 L) as the minimum aquarium for a German Blue Ram, and the September 2026 Aquarium Source guide also treats 20 gallons as a minimum for a pair. Because the Fluval sheet is for a related color form and because stocking, footprint and layout all affect usable territory, treat 20 gallons as a source-backed starting point—not a universal guarantee. A larger aquarium gives a pair and their companions more room to establish separate areas.
Build the aquarium before buying the fish
- Cycle and stabilize the tank. Establish biological filtration before introducing rams. Confirm that the system is processing waste consistently with your freshwater test kit.
- Provide gentle, effective filtration. The filter should maintain clean water without creating exhausting currents across the entire tank. Protect the intake if the aquarium contains very small fish or fry.
- Install temperature controls. Use an adjustable heater sized for the aquarium and place the thermometer where it can reveal the actual water temperature, not just the heater’s set point.
- Create visual breaks. Planting, driftwood, pebbles, leaf litter and small caves reflect the habitat style described by Fluval and allow fish to avoid one another.
- Leave open swimming space. Keep a clear area at the front or middle of the tank while reserving sheltered bottom areas for resting and potential spawning.
- Check every decoration. Avoid sharp edges, unstable rocks and caves that can trap a fish. Arrange hardscape so a territorial pair cannot control the entire aquarium from one defensible point.
Adding fish to an immature aquarium is a common cause of trouble. The electric-blue form’s reported sensitivity to poor water quality makes “mature and stable first” a more important rule than adding equipment for appearance alone.

Feeding an electric blue ram
Offer several appropriately sized foods instead of relying on one staple. The sources mention sinking dry pellets, bite-size granules, flakes, brine shrimp, daphnia and blackworms. The breeding paper also lists insect larvae, cyclops, nematodes and quality flakes. Choose foods that the fish can swallow comfortably and that reach the lower part of the aquarium.
A practical feeding pattern
- Use a small sinking pellet or granule as a regular staple.
- Rotate in flakes when the fish accepts them, breaking larger pieces into bite-size fragments.
- Offer brine shrimp, daphnia or another suitable small frozen or live food periodically for variety.
- During conditioning for breeding, increase variety rather than simply dumping in larger portions.
- Feed only what the fish consume promptly; uneaten food is especially undesirable in a morph that may react poorly to deteriorating water.
Watch the fish while feeding. A healthy group should investigate food actively, while persistent refusal, spitting, rapid breathing or hiding warrants a water test and a review of temperature, tank mates and recent changes.
Temperament and choosing tank mates
Outside spawning, electric blue rams are generally described as peaceful. During pair formation and breeding, they may defend eggs, fry or a chosen patch of substrate. Aquarium Industries specifically recommends peaceful, open-water schooling fish; Fluval similarly describes a peaceful fish that becomes territorial while guarding a brood.

Evaluate a potential companion on five traits rather than choosing by a generic “community fish” label:
- Adult size: Avoid fish large enough to swallow, injure or intimidate the ram.
- Temperament: Fin-nippers and persistently aggressive fish can keep a ram stressed even when no obvious injury occurs.
- Temperature tolerance: Companions must be comfortable in the ram’s warm range, not merely survive it briefly.
- Swimming level: Open-water schooling species can use a different zone from a bottom-oriented pair, reducing direct competition.
- Breeding behavior: Leave enough structure and space for territorial defense without forcing every fish into one corner.
Examples listed by Fluval include small to medium South American tetras, Corydoras, small anabantids, rasboras, various livebearers and smaller suckermouth catfish. These are examples, not a compatibility guarantee. A particular individual’s temperament, the aquarium footprint and the number of hiding places still determine whether the combination works.

How to introduce the fish safely
- Test the destination aquarium. Check temperature and the water-quality parameters you monitor before opening the transport bag.
- Dim the lights. Reduced lighting lowers initial stress and gives the fish a chance to locate cover.
- Acclimate gradually. Mix small amounts of aquarium water into the transport water over a measured period, following the seller’s or transporter’s safety guidance.
- Transfer the fish without adding bag water. This limits the introduction of transport waste and unknown contaminants.
- Observe quietly. Keep feeding light on the first day and watch breathing, balance, color and interactions with existing fish.
- Retest after introduction. New livestock can expose weaknesses in biological filtration, so continue checking parameters during the first several days.
Breeding behavior and setup
Pairs may form and jointly guard eggs and fry. Spawning can turn a normally calm fish into a territorial one, so breeding behavior should be planned for even if reproduction is not your goal.

Conditions that support a breeding attempt
- Begin with a healthy, established pair rather than trying to force two incompatible adults together.
- Provide a flat, dark stone or similarly stable surface for egg deposition.
- Keep temperature stable and warm. The 2023 breeding article gives 26–30°C, preferably 28°C, for captive breeding.
- Maintain the breeding water near pH 6.5–7.0 and 1–8 dGH as described in that article, changing conditions gradually.
- Condition the pair with varied small foods, including suitable live or frozen options.
- Use plants, wood and other structures to give the pair a defended area while preserving an escape route for tank mates.
The breeding article reports hatching after about two to three days, with free swimming several days later. Those timings are observations under its described conditions, not a schedule every pair will follow. Aquarium-raised parents may fail to care for a brood, and a successful spawn can still be lost to poor water quality, disturbance or predation. If a community aquarium contains other fish, be prepared for territorial chasing and for adults or tank mates to eat eggs or fry.
Maintenance and troubleshooting
Weekly checks
- Measure temperature with the thermometer and verify the heater is maintaining a steady reading.
- Test the water parameters you track, paying particular attention after maintenance, medication or a new fish addition.
- Remove uneaten food and debris without dismantling the fish’s established hiding places.
- Inspect the filter, heater, thermometer and airline or power cables for safe operation.
- Observe each ram separately: normal appetite, upright swimming and calm use of cover are more useful than color alone.
If a ram becomes withdrawn or stops eating
- Test the aquarium rather than guessing from appearance.
- Check that the temperature has not drifted outside the fish’s established range.
- Look for a recent disturbance: a new fish, aggressive chasing, a filter change, an unwashed decoration or an overfeeding event.
- Improve consistency with appropriate maintenance and remove decaying food or material.
- Separate an injured or relentlessly bullied fish if the layout cannot provide refuge.
- Seek qualified aquatic-veterinary advice when symptoms persist, breathing is labored, or multiple fish deteriorate.
Do not respond to a problem by making several drastic chemistry changes at once. Because published pH and hardness ranges differ, sudden correction can add stress; identify the cause, then move conditions gradually and keep them stable.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Do you have a cycled aquarium of at least about 20 US gallons (80 L) for a pair, with more space if the community is busy?
- Can you maintain warm, stable temperature with an adjustable heater and verify it with a thermometer?
- Will you test water regularly rather than relying on clear-looking water?
- Does the aquascape include plants, wood, pebbles, leaf litter or caves plus open swimming space?
- Are all proposed tank mates peaceful, appropriately sized and comfortable with warm water?
- Can you provide varied small foods without leaving waste in the aquarium?
- Do you have a plan for territorial behavior if the fish pair and spawn?
