They need a spacious, long aquarium, subdued lighting, soft substrate, deliberate feeding, and tank mates that will not outcompete them. Advice on minimum volume and group size conflicts between published care sources, so treat this as a specialist setup rather than a fish that can be fitted into a small community tank.
What is an elephant nose fish?
Gnathonemus petersii is a freshwater member of the elephantfish family Mormyridae. FishBase records it as a demersal species from the Niger and Congo River basins and lists a maximum of 35 cm standard length. Standard length is measured to the base of the tail, not the very end of the tail, so it should not be compared directly with total-length estimates in aquarium guides. Some older or community-written guides list adults around 20–23 cm; those figures should not be treated as a definitive maximum.

The fish’s “trunk” is an elongated lower lip used to probe the bottom for food. It is not a stinging organ and does not make the fish dangerous to people. Weak electrical signals create a field around the body that helps the fish orient itself and detect prey in murky water. The signals are a sensory adaptation, not an electrical shock hazard for an aquarist.

In nature and in aquariums, elephant nose fish are most active after dark. They spend much of the day sheltered and search the substrate at night for worms and small insects. That schedule affects lighting, feeding and tank-mate choices.

Are elephant nose fish hard to care for?
They are best described as demanding rather than impossible. The main difficulties are providing enough bottom territory, preventing faster fish from taking all the food, and maintaining a calm, dim environment. Their nocturnal behavior can make a healthy fish look inactive during the day, while a poor setup may remain unnoticed until the fish loses weight or becomes chronically stressed.
- Space: Published recommendations range from 200 liters to 240 liters, while a FishBase-relayed aquarium note specifies a 150 cm minimum tank length and a group of five or more. These are not results from a controlled comparison and are not a universal standard.
- Social behavior: The species is territorial and usually aggressive toward its own kind. A group therefore requires enough separate territory for individuals to avoid one another.
- Feeding: Worms and insects match its documented carnivorous ecology, but slow feeding and nocturnal activity make food access a management issue.
- Environment: Soft substrate, cover and subdued light support natural bottom-foraging and reduce exposure for a fish that prefers dim conditions.
How big of a tank does an elephant nose fish need?
There is no single agreed minimum in the available guidance. Use the figures as source-specific reference points, then choose the largest practical footprint you can provide rather than treating the smallest number as a target.
| Source | Recommendation or figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| FishBase field-guide record | 150 cm minimum aquarium length; group of five or more; also says the fish is not recommended for home aquariums | Relayed aquarium advice with no underlying date shown in the page excerpt. It conflicts with the same record’s description of strong conspecific territoriality, so do not read “five or more” as a simple beginner stocking rule. |
| East Cape Aquarium and Aquascaping Club | 200 L or more | Hobby-club guidance; it does not provide a detailed stocking prescription. |
| Aqua-Pedia | 240 L minimum | Community-assisted data that recommends single fish or groups only in large tanks where individuals can maintain distance. |
A long aquarium is more useful than a tall, narrow one because it creates separate bottom territories and gives the fish room to forage. Plan the footprint around the 150 cm length cited by FishBase rather than assuming that a high-volume tank with little floor area is equivalent. Leave open sand for feeding, then divide the rest of the floor with driftwood, caves or other stable cover.
If you cannot provide a spacious, long aquarium and a way to deliver food after the lights dim, choose a less specialized species. The published figures are care guidance, not proof that every elephant nose fish will thrive at exactly 200 or 240 liters.
Should you keep one elephant nose fish or a group?
Conspecific behavior is the hardest part of the stocking decision. FishBase describes the species as territorial and usually aggressive toward members of its own species. Aqua-Pedia therefore presents solitary keeping as an option and groups only for large aquariums in which individuals can maintain distance. The FishBase-relayed note, by contrast, mentions five or more fish and a 150 cm minimum length. Because those recommendations are not reconciled by a controlled study, a group should be considered a specialist project, not a default improvement.

When a single fish is the safer plan
A single elephant nose avoids direct conspecific disputes and is the more conservative choice when your aquarium cannot create multiple territories. It still needs the full footprint, cover, soft bottom and feeding plan; solitary does not mean suitable for a small tank.
When a group may be considered
Only consider several fish when the aquarium is exceptionally long and the layout offers visual breaks and separate resting areas. Watch for persistent chasing, one fish monopolizing shelter, torn fins, repeated hiding, weight loss or refusal to feed. Have a separation plan before adding the fish, because territorial conflict can require permanent rehoming rather than a minor decoration change.

Can elephant nose fish live with other fish?
There is no dependable named tank-mate list established by these references. Evaluate every candidate on five practical axes:
- Footprint and territory: The other fish must leave enough bottom area for the elephant nose to forage and retreat.
- Adult size: Avoid fish small enough to be viewed as prey or large enough to harass or injure it.
- Feeding speed: Fast, aggressive feeders can consume food before a nocturnal bottom-forager finds it. Aqua-Pedia specifically warns about this competition.
- Behavior: Fin-nipping, boisterous or strongly territorial species are poor matches for a shy fish that spends daylight hours concealed.
- Water range: The companion species must tolerate a compatible temperature and pH without forcing either fish to the edge of its range.
Observe feeding rather than assuming compatibility from a “peaceful community” label. A tank mate can be non-aggressive yet still unsuitable if it strips every worm or frozen food from the water column first. Feed in a way that lets the elephant nose locate food on the bottom after dark, and be prepared to remove a competitor that repeatedly prevents feeding.
Water parameters: what ranges are published?
The sources give overlapping but not identical ranges. Do not average them into a supposedly exact optimum; choose a stable, clean range that fits the rest of the aquarium and avoid abrupt changes.

The Aquarium Industries figures come from an older supplier sheet, while Aqua-Pedia identifies its data as community-assisted. None of these sources establishes an experimentally validated optimum or a universal water-change schedule. Test your aquarium regularly, keep conditions stable, and quarantine new fish so illness is not mistaken for a parameter problem.

They are carnivorous, nocturnal hunters. FishBase and Zoo Frankfurt describe worms and small insects taken while foraging at night. Aquarium Industries says the fish prefers live food such as chopped earthworms and may accept frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. Those foods fit the documented feeding ecology, but the references do not establish a complete formulated diet, a universal portion size or a single correct feeding frequency.
A practical feeding method
- Dim or switch off the main aquarium lights and allow the fish to become active at dusk.
- Offer appropriately sized live or frozen worm and insect foods at the bottom rather than relying on floating flakes.
- Distribute food across more than one area so a territorial fish cannot block every feeding site.
- Watch the individual, not just the tank: confirm that it searches, finds and swallows food.
- Remove uneaten food before it fouls the water, particularly when using thawed frozen foods.
Bloodworms and brine shrimp are foods the older Aquarium Industries sheet says the fish may take; that statement does not make either item a nutritionally complete lifelong diet. Rotate suitable worm and insect foods and judge condition by body shape, activity during the dark period and consistent feeding response.
Substrate, lighting and aquascape
Use a soft bottom
East Cape Aquarium and Aquascaping Club recommends soft sand, and Aqua-Pedia also favors a soft substrate. This is consistent with a fish that pushes its lower lip into the bottom while searching for prey. No cited source establishes a tested grain-size threshold, so the useful test is whether the substrate is smooth enough for probing and free of sharp edges.
Keep lighting subdued
Dim lighting is recommended by East Cape Aquarium and Aquascaping Club and suits a nocturnal fish associated with murky-water habitats. Provide shaded retreats so the fish can remain concealed during the day. No source specifies a measured light intensity, fixture, photoperiod or plant list; avoid claiming that a particular lamp is required.

Create cover without removing the feeding floor
Arrange driftwood, caves and other stable structures around open sand rather than covering every inch of the bottom. Cover gives the fish places to rest and lets territorial individuals break line of sight. Secure decorations so probing or routine maintenance cannot topple them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setting up the aquarium: a decision checklist
- Footprint first: Select a genuinely long aquarium, with the 150 cm length cited in the FishBase-relayed advice as a useful planning reference.
- Open foraging area: Reserve a broad section of smooth, soft substrate.
- Retreats: Add shaded cover and visual barriers, leaving enough space for each fish to pass without being trapped.
- Stable water: Choose a temperature and pH within the published ranges and maintain them consistently rather than chasing a precise midpoint.
- Night access: Place feeding areas where you can observe them after dusk without flooding the tank with bright light.
- Stocking plan: Decide in advance whether the fish will be solitary, and if attempting a group, how you will separate individuals if territorial aggression develops.
- Food security: Keep suitable live or frozen foods available and verify that slower fish receive a share.
Size, lifespan and conservation context
FishBase lists 35 cm as the maximum standard length. Aquarium guides that quote approximately 20–23 cm may be describing typical adult or trade sizes rather than a species maximum, and they use a different or unstated measurement. Plan the aquarium for the larger documented standard length instead of assuming a purchased juvenile will remain small.
FishBase reports an IUCN assessment of Least Concern dated 3 September 2019, and Zoo Frankfurt also lists the species as Least Concern. An Aquarium Industries sheet prepared around 2012 stated that the fish was not being bred commercially and that its offered animals were wild-caught at that time. That is historical supplier information, not evidence of current sourcing or current commercial-breeding status. Ask sellers for present-day collection or breeding details and favor transparent, legal sourcing.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing a tank by liters alone
A tall aquarium can meet a volume label while offering too little floor space. Correct this by prioritizing length and usable bottom territory.
Adding several fish because one source says “five or more”
That recommendation conflicts with descriptions of strong conspecific territoriality. Treat groups as an advanced option requiring a very large footprint, visual separation and a backup plan.

Feeding only during the day
A daytime feeding routine misses the species’ natural activity period. Offer food around dusk and confirm that the fish actually obtains it.
Using bright, bare decor
Constant strong light and no cover remove the security recommended for this nocturnal species. Add shaded retreats and keep illumination subdued.
Assuming “peaceful” means compatible
A peaceful but fast-feeding tank mate can still starve an elephant nose. Evaluate feeding speed, adult size, behavior and water needs together, and remove any fish that repeatedly blocks access to food.
