Elephants and Marula Fruit: What Science Says About “Drunken” Behavior

Elephants are famous for supposedly getting drunk on fermented marula fruit. Here is what dose models, alcohol-metabolism genetics and recent enzyme research actually show.

Short answer: Wild elephants are not proven to become drunk from naturally fermenting marula fruit, but science has not completely closed the case. A 2006 dose model found ordinary intoxication unlikely; a 2020 genetics study argued that human-based assumptions may underestimate elephant susceptibility; a 2023 marula-yeast review still found no direct field proof; and a 2026 enzyme study found that elephant liver enzymes can process ethanol efficiently. A swaying or stumbling elephant in a video therefore cannot be diagnosed as drunk from appearance alone.

Why people think elephants get drunk

The story centers on the marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea), which grows across parts of southern Africa. Ripe fruit drops to the ground, where yeasts can ferment its sugars. Folklore says elephants eat large quantities of the fallen fruit, become intoxicated, and then stagger, behave aggressively or cause unusual damage.

The image is memorable, but “drunk” has a specific meaning. It implies that an animal absorbed enough ethanol to change its nervous-system function. “Clumsy” only describes what an observer sees. A video can show swaying, a fall, or an agitated animal, but it cannot establish the cause without evidence of ethanol exposure and impairment.

What the strongest studies actually found

Study What it examined Main result What it does not prove
Morris, Humphreys and Reynolds (2006) Dose and feeding models for a 3,000-kilogram elephant Estimated roughly 10–27 litres of 7% ethanol consumed quickly would be needed for overt behavioral effects under its assumptions; ordinary feeding supplied about half the modeled dose. It did not measure blood ethanol in a free-ranging elephant after marula feeding.
Janiak and colleagues (2020) Alcohol dehydrogenase 7 (ADH7) genes across 85 mammals Reported elephant ADH7 pseudogenization and the absence of the A294V change associated with faster ethanol metabolism in great apes. Genetic differences alone do not demonstrate that an elephant was intoxicated in the field.
Marula-yeast review (2023) Fermentation biology and the folklore claim Found that empirical evidence that naturally fermenting marula fruit can inebriate elephants remains elusive. It did not settle every possible combination of fruit alcohol level, feeding rate and elephant metabolism.
Morita and colleagues (2026) Elephant ADH and ALDH at genomic, transcriptomic and enzyme levels Found high ethanol affinity, broadly comparable catalytic efficiency to tested mammals, relatively high cytosolic ALDH efficiency and three expressed ADH1 genes in elephant liver. It studied metabolic capacity, not a naturally feeding elephant’s blood alcohol or behavior.

Taken together, these results support a qualified conclusion rather than a simple yes or no. The old dose calculation makes routine intoxication seem difficult, while newer molecular work shows that the calculation cannot safely rely on human physiology as its only benchmark.

The 2006 dose calculation: why routine drunkenness looked unlikely

Morris, Humphreys and Reynolds wrote that “elephants are attracted to alcohol, but there is no clear evidence of inebriation in the field.” Their model considered the body mass of a 3,000-kilogram elephant, the ethanol concentration that might occur in fruit and the amount consumed over a short period.

Under the model, the animal would need approximately 10 to 27 litres of 7% ethanol consumed quickly to show overt behavioral effects. This is a volume of ethanol-containing liquid, not 10–27 litres of pure alcohol. The range reflects uncertainty in assumptions such as absorption, distribution and clearance.

The same analysis estimated an ethanol dose of about 0.3 grams per kilogram from a normal feeding scenario. That was approximately half the modeled dose required for obvious effects. The authors emphasized that their calculations were “highly biased in favor of inebriation” and still failed to show that elephants ordinarily become drunk.

This is a model, not a field measurement. It depends on how much fruit an elephant eats, the fruit’s actual ethanol concentration, how rapidly the animal consumes it, how much ethanol is absorbed and how quickly the liver removes it. If any of those inputs are wrong, the numerical result changes. The value of the paper is that it exposed the scale of the problem: a casual handful of fermented fruit is not automatically equivalent to an intoxicating dose for a multi-ton animal.

Why the 2020 genetics study challenged that conclusion

In 2020, Mareike C. Janiak and colleagues compared alcohol dehydrogenase genes in 85 mammals. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) begins the breakdown of ethanol; aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) processes the toxic acetaldehyde produced in the first step.

The researchers reported 10 independent pseudogenization events involving ADH7, including in African and Asian elephants. A pseudogenized gene is a sequence that has lost its original protein-coding function. They also noted that elephants lack the A294V mutation associated with accelerated ethanol metabolism in great apes.

Those findings matter because the 2006 calculation effectively treated human ethanol handling as a useful comparison. If elephants process alcohol differently, a dose judged modest by human-based assumptions may not have the same effect in an elephant. Janiak’s paper said that conclusions about the amount of ethanol required to produce symptoms in an African elephant were likely erroneous and that the folklore “may well be substantiated.”

That wording is a biological warning, not a field diagnosis. A gene loss can alter one pathway without determining the animal’s total ethanol clearance. Other ADH genes, ALDH enzymes, gut microbes, body size, food in the stomach and the pace of eating all influence exposure. The study made the original model less secure; it did not report a drunk elephant with a measured blood-ethanol concentration.

What marula fermentation evidence shows

A 2023 study reviewing yeast associated with marula fruit addressed the ecological part of the story: whether fruit fermenting under natural conditions actually produces enough alcohol, in a form elephants consume rapidly enough, to cause intoxication.

Its conclusion was cautious: empirical evidence that alcohol in naturally fermenting fruit can inebriate elephants remains elusive. That does not mean marula fruit never contains ethanol. Fermentation can occur, and ethanol levels can vary with ripeness, temperature, oxygen, microbes and the time fruit remains on the ground. It means that the complete chain—naturally available alcohol, sufficient dose, rapid absorption and observable impairment—has not been demonstrated in free-ranging elephants.

Fruit also contains water, pulp and other nutrients. Elephants may eat fruit at different stages of ripeness, mix it with leaves or soil, and spread feeding over time. Those details affect the peak alcohol concentration in the bloodstream. A laboratory measurement from one batch of fruit cannot automatically describe every marula grove or every season.

What the 2026 enzyme study adds

Morita and colleagues examined elephant alcohol metabolism at genomic, transcriptomic and enzymatic levels. Their work reported three expressed ADH1 genes in elephant liver. The enzymes showed high affinity for ethanol, broadly comparable catalytic efficiency to tested mammals and relatively high efficiency for cytosolic ALDH.

In practical terms, the findings argue against the idea that elephants have an exceptionally poor liver clearance system that would inevitably allow ordinary fruit alcohol to accumulate. They also show why a single gene marker cannot answer the whole question: elephant alcohol metabolism involves an active set of enzymes, not only ADH7.

The study still leaves anecdotal inebriation unresolved. Enzyme activity measured in the laboratory describes biochemical capacity. It does not reveal how much ethanol a particular elephant consumed, its blood concentration, its feeding speed or its behavior at that moment. The authors therefore treated the molecular basis of reported drunken behavior as incompletely understood.

How to judge a video of a “drunk” elephant

Use three separate tests rather than treating an unusual movement as proof.

1. Directness of the evidence

The strongest evidence would be a blood-ethanol measurement taken soon after documented feeding on naturally fermented marula fruit, paired with a standardized observation of impairment. An anecdote, caption or viral clip is far less direct. No cited study has reported that controlled field measurement.

2. Biological mechanism

Ask whether the claim is based on a dose model, on ADH and ALDH genetics, or on measured enzyme activity. Models estimate; genes indicate possible differences; enzymes show chemical capacity. None of those, by itself, is a measurement of intoxication in a particular animal.

3. Ecological plausibility

Estimate the fruit’s ethanol concentration, the volume eaten, how quickly it was consumed and whether the elephant had time to metabolize alcohol between feeding bouts. Without those details, “it ate fermented fruit, therefore it was drunk” skips the central dose question.

There are also ordinary explanations for apparent clumsiness. Uneven ground, mud, loose sand, fatigue, injury, illness, social conflict, heat stress, defensive displays or normal changes in gait can all produce movements that look strange on camera. The cited studies do not validate swaying, falling, aggression or disorientation as alcohol intoxication.

What would finally resolve the folklore?

A convincing answer would require wildlife-safe, ethically approved observations that connect exposure to effect. Researchers would need to document the fruit source and fermentation state, estimate the amount eaten and obtain appropriately timed biological samples without endangering the animals. Blood-ethanol results would then need to be compared with a defined behavioral assessment and with measurements from elephants that had not recently consumed fermented fruit.

Such work is difficult. Free-ranging elephants are large, social animals that move through changing habitats. Sampling can disturb them, and the highest alcohol concentration may occur before researchers can safely approach. A study that measures ethanol in fruit alone cannot establish intoxication; a behavioral video without exposure data cannot establish cause.

So, are these elephants drunk or just clumsy?

Based on the available evidence, neither label is justified from appearance alone. The traditional marula story remains biologically possible, but ordinary wild elephants have not been proven to become intoxicated under natural conditions. The 2006 model argues that a very large, rapidly consumed dose would be needed. The 2020 genetic findings show why human-based calculations may be misleading. The 2023 review found no direct ecological proof, and the 2026 enzyme study found substantial capacity to metabolize ethanol.

The most accurate answer to a clip or anecdote is therefore: the elephant may look unsteady, but there is no reliable way to call it drunk without direct exposure and physiological evidence.
