Elk vs. Moose: How Big Are North America’s Largest Deer?

Moose are larger than North American elk, but elk remain among the biggest deer. See source-specific weights, shoulder heights, regional differences and the naming trap behind “elk.”

Moose are larger than elk. The National Park Service (NPS) identifies moose as the largest members of the deer family, while North American elk rank among the biggest. A large bull elk is imposing, but a large male moose can be substantially heavier and taller. The figures below are approximate values from separate NPS species references, not measurements taken in one controlled comparison.

There is an important naming trap: in North America, elk usually means wapiti (Cervus canadensis), whereas European English commonly uses elk for what North Americans call a moose. This article uses “North American elk” and “moose” to keep the comparison clear.

The direct answer: moose are bigger

For body size, compare adult mass and shoulder or withers height—not antler dimensions. On that basis, moose exceed elk. Rocky Mountain National Park’s NPS pages describe large bull elk as weighing 700–1,000 pounds and standing about five feet at the shoulder, while large male moose can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds and adults average five to seven feet at the shoulder. The two pages do not represent a single standardized survey, so these numbers should be read as useful regional reference ranges rather than a laboratory-style ranking.

At the upper ends of those cited figures, a 1,500-pound male moose is as much as 500 pounds heavier than a 1,000-pound large bull elk. That is a comparison of stated upper values, not a promise that every moose outweighs every elk. Individual animals overlap, and the references describe different populations and sampling conventions.

NPS’s Kobuk Valley National Park likewise describes moose as the largest living cervids and says Alaska moose are the largest subspecies. That supports the practical conclusion—if you are asking whether an elk is the biggest deer, the answer is no—but it does not create a harmonized worldwide record table for every deer species.

Elk are still enormous deer. A mature bull has a much larger frame than a cow, and regional populations differ. Roosevelt elk, Rocky Mountain elk and Yellowstone elk should not be blended into one falsely precise “average elk.”

Size comparison at a glance

The table keeps sex, region and measurement type visible. “Shoulder height” and “withers height” describe the top of the body at the shoulders; they do not include antlers.

Animal or reference population Sex or context Body mass Shoulder/withers height Body length Source
North American elk (Cervus canadensis), Rocky Mountain National Park reference Large bulls 700–1,000 lb About 5 ft About 8 ft NPS Rocky Mountain National Park, “Elk” (publication date not stated)
North American elk, Rocky Mountain National Park reference Cows About 300–500 lb About 4.5 ft About 6 ft NPS Rocky Mountain National Park, “Elk” (publication date not stated)

Roosevelt elk Range stated for the population 377–1,096 lb 2.5–5.6 ft at the withers Not stated NPS, “Roosevelt Elk” (2021)
Northern Yellowstone elk General reference; males about one-third larger than females Not stated 4.5–5 ft 5–9 ft NPS Yellowstone reference, September 2023

The Roosevelt entry is reproduced as that NPS page states it. Its broad height and weight ranges are not interchangeable with the Rocky Mountain or Yellowstone figures: the sources cover different populations and use different descriptions. The unusually low end of the stated Roosevelt height range is one reason not to treat the page as a single typical adult measurement.

The table also shows why a simple “average elk” number would mislead. A large Rocky Mountain bull, a cow, and the full Roosevelt range represent different reference groups. The Yellowstone source supplies height and length but no matching mass range, so there is no defensible way to calculate a single cross-source average from these entries.

How large is a North American elk?

Bulls and cows are markedly different

Sex is the first variable to check when someone reports an elk’s size. Bulls are the antlered males and are substantially heavier and taller than cows. The Rocky Mountain reference gives the bull and cow figures in the table above; the difference is large enough that a cow can look like a different-sized animal even when both are healthy adults.

Using the cited ranges, a large bull’s 700–1,000 pounds is roughly 200–700 pounds above the 300–500-pound cow range, although the endpoints are not a paired measurement of the same herd. The point is the scale of sexual dimorphism, not a universal conversion for every elk population.

Yellowstone’s 2023 reference expresses the same pattern in another way, describing males as about one-third larger than females. Because that source gives a population-level height and length range rather than a mass range, it should be used as a separate regional reference, not merged mathematically with the Rocky Mountain numbers.

Body length is secondary to height and mass

Length can help describe an elk’s proportions, but only if the source explains how it was measured. The Rocky Mountain page supplies approximate male and female body lengths, while the Yellowstone reference gives a broader 5–9-foot range. A photograph, a stretched carcass measurement and a nose-to-rump field estimate can produce different results, so body length is less reliable for ranking animals than a clearly defined shoulder measurement and weighed mass.

Regional populations should remain separate

“Elk” is a species-level name that covers geographically distinct populations. Roosevelt elk range from northern California through the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, according to NPS. Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone references describe other regional groups. Climate, forage, age, season and local genetics can all influence body size. A Roosevelt elk value should therefore be labeled Roosevelt elk, rather than presented as the size of every North American elk.

Even within one named population, a field guide may summarize adults while a park page highlights a particularly large bull. Before comparing two numbers, ask whether they describe the same sex, age class and type of individual. A maximum is not a typical value, and a broad population range is not an average.

How large is a moose?

Why moose take the size crown

Moose combine a very tall shoulder line with a heavy body. NPS’s Rocky Mountain page gives adults an average shoulder height of five to seven feet and notes that large males can reach 1,500 pounds. That upper mass is well above the 700–1,000-pound range NPS uses for large Rocky Mountain bull elk. The same agency’s Kobuk Valley material calls moose the largest living cervids and identifies Alaska moose as the largest subspecies.

Those statements answer the ordinary “biggest deer” question at the family level: moose are larger than elk. They do not mean every moose is larger than every elk. A young moose, a small regional moose or a very large bull elk can overlap in size. Population, sex and age still matter whenever two individual animals are compared.

The five-to-seven-foot figure is shoulder height, not the height of the antlers or the animal’s raised head. Moose can therefore look even taller in a photograph, especially when standing on uneven ground or stretching their necks toward browse. Keep the measurement point fixed when making a numerical comparison.

Geography matters especially for the word “elk”

In North American wildlife writing, an elk is generally Cervus canadensis, also called wapiti. In much of Europe, “elk” is the common English name for Alces alces, the animal North Americans call a moose. A European article saying “elk are the biggest deer” may therefore be talking about moose, not wapiti. Check the scientific name or the regional context before comparing a number.

NPS pages identify current North American elk references with Cervus canadensis, although older park materials may use historical classification or wording associated with Cervus elaphus. The common-name confusion is real; it is not evidence that the animals are the same size.

Use the right measurement when comparing deer

Shoulder or withers height

Shoulder height is the vertical distance from the ground to the top of the shoulders. “Withers” is the equivalent term used in some wildlife references. It provides a body-size comparison that works for both sexes and does not change when a male sheds or regrows antlers. When a source says an animal is five feet tall, verify that it means shoulder height rather than the height of the head, ears or antlers.

Body mass

Mass is useful but must retain its qualification. A source may describe an average, a range, a large adult or an exceptional maximum. The NPS wording “large males can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds” is not an average for every moose. Similarly, “700–1,000 pounds” for large bull elk should not be rewritten as the normal weight of all bulls. Age, season, nutrition, pregnancy and whether a carcass was weighed with stomach contents can affect a recorded value.

Body length

Length is a supporting measurement. Unless the source defines the endpoints, two apparently similar figures may measure different parts of the animal. Use length to describe proportions within one reference, not to override a clearly stated shoulder height or mass comparison.

Antlers are not body height

Antlers are seasonal male structures and answer a different question from “Which deer is bigger?” The NPS Rocky Mountain elk page says antlers can grow up to an inch per day and that mature male antlers can weigh up to 40 pounds. The Yellowstone reference describes typical healthy bull antlers as 55–60 inches long and nearly six feet wide. Those figures illustrate antler growth and spread; they do not make an elk taller or heavier than a moose when body size is measured properly.

Antlers also change through the year. A bull carrying a full rack and the same bull after shedding have different visible silhouettes but the same underlying body-size category. Comparing antler spread with a moose’s shoulder height mixes two unlike features. If the question is about trophy antlers, it needs a separate set of measurements and standards.

Why published elk figures do not all match

  1. Different populations: Roosevelt elk in the Pacific Northwest are not automatically equivalent to Rocky Mountain or Yellowstone elk.
  2. Different samples: One page may describe a large bull, another an adult average, and another a broad range that includes many ages.
  3. Different measurement definitions: Shoulder height, withers height, total length and antler spread are not interchangeable.
  4. Different source purposes: A park species page is usually an educational reference, not a controlled cross-population study.
  5. Sex and age structure: A herd estimate that combines cows, calves and bulls will be lower than a figure specifically for mature bulls.
  6. Season and condition: Weight changes with forage, winter stress, pregnancy and the time of year.

These reasons explain why the table presents source-specific values instead of calculating one “average elk.” Combining unlike measurements would create precision the underlying references do not support.

The same caution applies to online claims that attach a single maximum to an entire species. A record animal may come from a particular region, may be measured at a particular time of year, and may be reported with or without antlers. Without those details, the number cannot fairly overturn the broad NPS comparison that moose are the larger cervids.

What “the biggest deer” can and cannot mean

What the NPS evidence supports

The cited NPS material supports a straightforward family-level conclusion: moose are the largest living members of Cervidae, and Alaska moose are described as the largest moose subspecies. North American elk are among the largest deer but are smaller than moose in the cited comparisons.

In ordinary language, “biggest” usually means a combination of bulk and height. Moose lead on both of the principal measures supplied here: their cited adult shoulder range begins at about five feet and extends to seven feet, while large bull elk are listed at about five feet; the cited large male moose maximum also exceeds the bull-elk range.

What it does not establish

It does not provide a single, globally standardized ranking of every living deer species using the same definition of adult, the same geographic coverage and the same measurement method. For that reason, “elk are the second-largest deer in the world” is too absolute for these references. A careful statement is “Moose are larger than North American elk; elk are among the largest deer-family animals.”

Exceptional-record claims also need their own documentation. A maximum from one research station, especially one that includes antlers, cannot be compared directly with a body-mass range from a park species page. Unless the source defines the measurement and context, leave the record out of a general size comparison.

A practical checklist for reading an elk-or-moose size claim

  • Identify the animal’s region and, if supplied, subspecies or population.
  • Confirm whether “elk” means wapiti or moose in the source’s geography.
  • Record the sex: bull, cow, male moose or female moose.
  • Separate adult averages, stated ranges, large-animal descriptions and exceptional maxima.
  • Check whether height means shoulder/withers height or antler-tip height.
  • Check the body-length endpoints and whether the value is approximate.
  • Keep the publication date when one is given, such as the September 2023 Yellowstone reference.
  • Do not combine figures from separate NPS pages into a made-up single average.

Following this checklist prevents the most common error: taking a large bull elk statistic, a moose average, an antler measurement and a European use of “elk,” then treating them as if they described one comparable animal.

How to interpret an animal seen in the field

Distance and posture make wildlife look larger or smaller than it is. A moose’s long legs and high shoulders can make it appear disproportionately tall, while an elk’s neck, mane and antlers add visual bulk. Use the shoulder line and body shape rather than the antler tips in a photograph. If the animal is in a mixed group, sex and age differences may be more informative than the apparent size of a single individual.

Do not estimate a precise weight from a photograph. At most, a photograph can support a cautious identification of species, sex class or relative size. A reliable numerical comparison requires a defined measurement or a source that explains how the animal was weighed.

Frequently asked questions

Are elk bigger than moose?

No. The NPS references used here place moose above North American elk in shoulder height and in the cited upper male weights. A very large elk and a smaller moose can overlap, but the species-level comparison favors moose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the largest deer in the world?

For the family-level answer supported by these NPS references, moose are the largest living members of the deer family. A globally standardized ranking of every living deer species, using one measurement method, is not supplied here, so avoid presenting an absolute worldwide record table.

How much does a bull elk weigh?

The Rocky Mountain National Park reference lists large bull elk at about 700–1,000 pounds. That is a range for large bulls, not an average for every bull or every elk population.

How much does a cow elk weigh?

The same reference gives cows about 300–500 pounds, with a shoulder height around 4.5 feet and an approximate body length of six feet.

How tall is a moose?

NPS gives adult moose an average shoulder height of five to seven feet. Large males can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds. “Tall” here means shoulder height, not the top of the antlers or the animal’s head.

Why do Roosevelt elk numbers look so different?

The NPS Roosevelt elk page states a broad range of 377–1,096 pounds and 2.5–5.6 feet at the withers. Because that range covers a different population and is unusually broad, it should be quoted with its regional label rather than merged with Rocky Mountain or Yellowstone figures.

Does antler size make an elk larger than a moose?

No. Antler spread is a seasonal male trait, not body height or body mass. NPS reports elk antlers growing up to an inch per day, mature male antlers weighing up to 40 pounds, and typical healthy Yellowstone bull antlers measuring 55–60 inches long and nearly six feet wide. Those are antler facts, not evidence that elk have the larger bodies.

Why might a European source seem to reverse the answer?

In European English, “elk” commonly means Alces alces, the animal called a moose in North America. North American elk are wapiti, Cervus canadensis. Check the scientific name and region before interpreting a size claim.

Bottom line for the title question

North American elk are huge deer, but they are not the biggest. NPS references place moose above elk in both typical shoulder height and the largest male weights cited here. The safest comparison keeps the names, populations, sexes and measurement definitions explicit: a large bull elk is not the same reference subject as an adult moose, and antler spread is not body size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are elk bigger than moose?

No. Moose are generally larger; NPS lists adult moose at about 5–7 feet at the shoulder and large males up to 1,500 pounds, while large bull elk are listed at 700–1,000 pounds and about five feet at the shoulder.

What is the largest deer in the world?

Moose are described by NPS as the largest living members of the deer family. These references do not establish a single standardized global ranking of every deer species.

How much does a bull elk weigh?

Large bull elk in the Rocky Mountain National Park reference weigh about 700–1,000 pounds.

How much does a cow elk weigh?

The same NPS reference gives cows about 300–500 pounds and approximately 4.5 feet at the shoulder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does antler spread determine which deer is biggest?

No. Body mass and shoulder or withers height are the appropriate measures. Antlers are seasonal male structures and should not be compared with body height.

Why does “elk” mean different animals?

North American elk are wapiti, or Cervus canadensis. European English commonly uses “elk” for Alces alces, called moose in North America.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Moose are larger than North American elk. Large bull elk reach about 700–1,000 pounds and five feet at the shoulder in the cited NPS reference, while adult moose average five to seven feet at the shoulder and large males can reach 1,500 pounds. Keep region, sex and measurement type explicit.
