The dependable way to keep it is to stock a properly sized group in a mature, cycled, planted aquarium, provide gentle but effective filtration, and feed food particles small enough to swallow. Tank-volume and water recommendations vary among care references, so the figures below are presented as practical husbandry choices rather than universal biological limits.
What is an ember tetra?
Ember tetra is the common name for Hyphessobrycon amandae, a freshwater tetra associated with Brazil’s Araguaia River region. Species-care references describe slow, vegetated backwaters, which explains why dense plant cover and subdued areas work well in an aquarium; no particular substrate, leaf litter or tannin treatment is established as medically essential. Aquarium Co-Op identifies the species as Brazilian and reports a size of about 0.8 inch (2 cm), while a more precise record gives a maximum of 2.0 cm standard length. Standard length is measured from the snout to the base of the tail, not to the end of the tail fin, and is not a promise that every fish will reach that measurement.

How big do ember tetras get?
The best-supported maximum is 2.0 cm standard length. Because the measurement stops at the tail base, a fish’s total length with the tail extended can look slightly greater. Juveniles sold in shops are often smaller and less strongly colored than mature fish. Size alone should not be used to justify an undersized aquarium: the fish is active, social and dependent on stable water quality.
Choose a tank by footprint, group and maintenance capacity
There is no controlled study establishing one universal minimum aquarium for this species. Published recommendations differ because they reflect husbandry policy, filtration capacity and the number of fish being kept.

| Fishkeeping.co.uk | 45 litres | At least six; preferably 10 or more | A conservative community-aquarium recommendation. See the caresheet. |
| Aquarium Co-Op | A 5-gallon nano tank can be used for a smaller school | At least six to 10 | Requires disciplined maintenance and appropriate stocking; the article does not define a scientific minimum. |
| Tropical Fish Co | About 45 litres, with a roughly 45 × 30 cm footprint | About 10 or more | A welfare-oriented, conservative setup that balances swimming room and group behavior. Read its 14 August 2026 guide. |
For most keepers, a 45-litre aquarium with a group of 10 or more is the easier choice: the larger water volume dilutes waste and gives you room for plants, open swimming space and a properly sized filter. A well-maintained 5-gallon aquarium may suit a smaller group, but it leaves less margin for overfeeding, evaporation, temperature swings and missed maintenance. Litres-per-fish is not a biological formula; usable floor area, filtration, plant growth, stocking level and your testing routine matter together.
Build the layout around cover and open water
- Use live plants or other aquarium-safe cover to create shaded retreats and visual breaks.
- Leave an unobstructed central or front area where the school can move together.
- Choose a filter that processes waste and maintains oxygenation without blasting the fish around. A sponge filter is one gentle-flow option, not a species-specific requirement.
- Secure the lid, because small tetras can jump when startled.
Do not add fish until the aquarium is cycled and tests show zero detectable ammonia and nitrite. Measure both the aquarium and your source water before stocking; the actual values in your home are more useful than trying to force a number copied from a chart.
Water parameters: stability matters more than chasing a number
Care references give overlapping but non-identical ranges. Aquarium Co-Op lists pH 5.5–7.5 and 72–82°F (22–28°C). Fishkeeping.co.uk lists pH 5.5–7.0, 24–28°C and 1–10 dGH. Tropical Fish Co stresses that these are aquarium-care ranges, not measurements of every wild location. Use a reliable test kit and make changes gradually rather than repeatedly correcting a stable aquarium to a single target pH.

| Parameter | Published range or guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| pH | 5.5–7.5 (Aquarium Co-Op); 5.5–7.0 (Fishkeeping.co.uk) | Pick a stable value compatible with your source water; avoid abrupt swings. |
| Temperature | 22–28°C (72–82°F) or 24–28°C, depending on reference | Keep temperature steady with a correctly sized heater and thermometer. |
| Hardness | 1–10 dGH in the Fishkeeping.co.uk guidance | Test your water rather than assuming tap water or softened water fits. |
| Ammonia and nitrite | Zero detectable before stocking, per Tropical Fish Co’s practical recommendation | Delay stocking or investigate the biofilter if either is detectable. |
When introducing fish, match the shipping water and aquarium conditions as safely as possible and acclimate gradually. Avoid unmeasured reverse-osmosis mixing recipes: dilution can change hardness and pH quickly, and the correct blend depends on your measured source water and intended parameters.
What should you feed ember tetras?
Ember tetras are omnivores, but their tiny mouths make particle size the immediate constraint. Use a complete prepared nano food as the staple, choosing particles the smallest fish can take without spitting them out. Suitable examples listed by Aquarium Co-Op include nano pellets and finely crushed flakes. Rotate in appropriately sized live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops or rotifers for variety.
| Food type | Role | Check before feeding |
|---|---|---|
| Complete nano pellets | Convenient daily staple with a formulated nutrient profile | Pellets must fit the fish’s mouth and soften readily. |
| Crushed flakes | Prepared-food alternative | Crush to dust-free, bite-size pieces; remove persistent leftovers. |
| Baby brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops or rotifers | Small live or frozen variety foods | Thaw frozen portions and offer only what the group consumes promptly. |
Feed small portions and watch the whole group. If food repeatedly sinks untouched or remains after feeding, reduce the portion and siphon or otherwise remove the waste. No reliable evidence shows that one food changes color within a fixed number of days, and ordinary flakes are not automatically unsuitable when they are crushed to a usable size.

Behavior and compatible tank mates
Ember tetras are generally peaceful, social fish. A group displays more natural schooling and confidence than a lone specimen. Select companions that share compatible water conditions, remain peaceful and cannot swallow a 2-cm fish.

- Appropriately kept small Corydoradinae catfish are a possible bottom-dwelling companion, provided their own social and floor-space requirements are met.
- Adult shrimp may coexist, but ember tetras can eat shrimplets. Dense moss and fine-leaved plants provide hiding places but do not eliminate predation.
- Avoid large, aggressive or highly boisterous fish that compete for food or regard the tetras as prey.
Plan the complete stocking list before buying fish. Adding several schooling species to a small tank can produce multiple undersized groups rather than one healthy group of ember tetras.
Routine care and problem prevention
Test water during cycling, after adding livestock and whenever fish act unusually. Regular partial water changes, filter maintenance and removal of uneaten food keep organic waste from accumulating; set the schedule according to test results, stocking and plant growth rather than a universal calendar. Rinse mechanical media in removed aquarium water, not chlorinated tap water, so you do not unnecessarily damage beneficial microbes.

Quarantine procedures are useful for any new livestock, but the reviewed care sources do not provide a species-specific disease protocol. Diagnose a problem from symptoms and test results rather than dosing a display tank indiscriminately.

Ember tetras are egg scatterers with no parental care. Aquarium Co-Op puts it plainly: “As egg scatterers, they display no parental care and will happily predate on their own eggs and newborn fry.” If adults can reach the eggs, many will be eaten.

- Use a mature, stable, planted aquarium or a dedicated breeding setup with gentle filtration.
- Add a barrier or spawning material that lets eggs fall out of the adults’ reach.
- Provide suitable small foods and observe spawning behavior without making abrupt water changes.
- Remove the adults after spawning, or otherwise separate them from the eggs, because there is no protective parenting.
- When fry become free-swimming, offer tiny starter foods such as infusoria or vinegar eels before moving to larger foods that they can comfortably swallow.
- Monitor water quality closely; a small fry setup has little tolerance for excess food or waste.
This is practical guidance from a retailer’s care article, not a controlled, species-specific breeding protocol. Taiwan’s Fisheries Research Institute has recorded artificial propagation of H. amandae, according to Tropical Fish Co, but the publicly summarized record does not establish a universal clutch size, hatch time, water recipe, tank volume or fry-growth schedule. Do not treat a precise egg count or “hatches in X hours” claim as settled fact.

How long do ember tetras live?
Published aquarium estimates are not consistent. Aquarium Source reports a typical lifespan of two to four years, while a Fast Aquatics search-result excerpt gives three to four years. The reviewed evidence-led guide did not identify a species-specific, scientifically verified lifespan record. Use roughly two to four years as a care-planning estimate, not a fixed biological limit; genetics, shipping stress, diet, water quality and disease all affect an individual fish’s survival.
Buying and acclimating responsibly
Choose active fish with intact fins, clear eyes and normal swimming, and ask how long the group has been held and what water it is kept in. Confirm the sale unit and shipping conditions before purchase, especially if ordering livestock across regions. On arrival, dim the aquarium, match conditions gradually, release fish without adding transport water to the display, and observe them closely during the first feeding. Keep testing after introduction because a new group can increase the biological load quickly.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Want the most forgiving setup? Choose about 45 litres, 10 or more ember tetras, dense plants, open swimming space and gentle filtration.
- Have a 5-gallon nano tank? Keep the stocking conservative, use a smaller group within the six-to-10 guidance, and commit to careful testing and maintenance.
- Unsure about your tap water? Test pH and hardness, then prioritize stability instead of mixing water according to an unmeasured recipe.
- Want fry? Protect scattered eggs from adults and prepare microscopic first foods before spawning occurs.
