Embrace Pet Insurance Explained: Coverage, Costs, Waiting Periods, and Claims

A practical guide to Embrace pet insurance: what accident-and-illness coverage includes, how waiting periods and pre-existing conditions work, how claims are paid, and which policy details to verify.

Embrace Pet Insurance is an accident-and-illness policy for eligible, unexpected veterinary treatment—not a blanket plan for every vet bill. Embrace’s public pages describe the product generally, but your policy form, state endorsements, underwriting decision, selected limits and deductible, and individual quote determine what is covered and what you will pay. Read those documents before relying on any summary.

What Embrace pet insurance is designed to cover

Embrace describes its core policy as accident-and-illness insurance. Eligible treatment can include diagnostics and imaging, hospitalization, surgery, emergency visits, specialty care, chronic conditions, and some dental illness. Behavioral services and rehabilitation may also be eligible when the policy’s terms allow them. The enrollment material says prescription medication and exam-fee add-ons may be available, but availability and terms depend on the policy and state.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These are categories in Embrace’s general product descriptions, not a promise that every service, diagnosis, provider, or invoice will qualify. A claim is evaluated under the definitions, exclusions, limits and endorsements in your issued policy. For a condition that is unusual, ongoing, or expensive, ask Embrace for a coverage explanation and keep the response with your records.

What accident-and-illness insurance does not do

Routine preventive care is outside the accident-and-illness policy. Vaccinations, wellness examinations and other predictable care should not be assumed to qualify simply because a veterinarian provides them. Embrace presents Wellness Rewards as a separate optional membership for eligible routine spending. It is not insurance, has its own annual maximum and membership terms, and can leave outstanding fees if you end the membership before the 12-month membership period is complete. The coverage disclosure says Wellness Rewards is not available in Rhode Island.

Check the current membership terms and compare the allowance with what you actually expect to spend. A routine-care membership and an insurance policy solve different budgeting problems; enrolling in one does not expand the other’s exclusions or limits.

How deductible, reimbursement and annual maximum work together

Three settings determine much of your financial exposure: the annual deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual maximum. Consider them together rather than choosing a plan by its advertised percentage alone.

Setting What it means Question to ask
Annual deductible The amount you are responsible for before reimbursement begins. Embrace says it is met once per policy term. How much can I pay out of pocket before this policy starts sharing eligible costs?
Reimbursement percentage The covered share of eligible costs after the deductible. At an 80% rate, you remain responsible for the other 20% of eligible costs, subject to the annual limit. After the deductible, can I comfortably fund my share of a large bill?
Annual maximum The most the insurer will reimburse in a policy year after the deductible. Would this ceiling be adequate for a serious illness or multiple claims in one year?

For an illustration only, suppose a policy has a $500 annual deductible and 80% reimbursement, and an eligible claim totals $2,000. The first $500 is your responsibility; 80% of the remaining $1,500 would be $1,200, leaving you with $800 for that claim ($500 deductible plus the 20% share). The actual calculation can differ because policies define eligible expenses, apply annual limits and may handle multiple claims or categories differently.

Your premium also changes with the pet, location and selected coverage. There is no universal price that applies to every dog or cat. Obtain an individual quote and read the resulting schedule of benefits rather than extrapolating from an advertisement or another owner’s bill.

How the annual maximum affects a year with several claims

The annual maximum is a policy-year ceiling on what the insurer can reimburse, not a promise to pay that amount for every incident. If your pet has multiple covered accidents or illnesses, reimbursements accumulate toward that ceiling. Once it is reached, additional eligible bills in the same policy year remain your responsibility, even if the diagnosis itself would otherwise qualify.

Ask when the policy year starts and ends, how the deductible is counted, and whether any category-specific sublimits apply. Keep a running total of reimbursements and pending claims. This is especially important when a chronic condition requires repeated visits, medication or monitoring: the condition may remain eligible while the available annual benefit gets smaller.

Waiting periods: when coverage actually starts

Embrace’s general enrollment information states that accident coverage starts on the policy’s effective date, while illness coverage begins after a 14-day waiting period. Orthopedic waiting periods for dogs can vary by state. Your account and state-specific policy materials control the dates for your pet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A symptom that appears during a waiting period can affect later coverage. Embrace says that if signs or a diagnosis arise during a waiting period, the condition may be treated as pre-existing. Confirm the effective date, the end of the illness waiting period and any orthopedic waiting period before scheduling elective care, and retain those dates with your policy documents.

Do not confuse a waiting period with the time needed to process enrollment or a claim. Coverage starts according to the contract’s dates, while reimbursement occurs only after treatment, submission and review. If a veterinarian observes a problem before the waiting period ends, disclose it when asking about coverage rather than assuming a later diagnosis creates a new condition.

What counts as a pre-existing condition?

Embrace uses a broad definition: an injury, illness or irregularity noted by you or a veterinarian before coverage began or before a waiting period ended can be considered pre-existing. A formal diagnosis or even a veterinary visit is not required under that definition. For example, a limp you observed before enrollment, recurring vomiting mentioned in a prior record, or a skin problem noted during a waiting period could be relevant to a later claim.

Embrace distinguishes certain temporary conditions from chronic or incurable exclusions and says it may reconsider a temporary condition after 12 consecutive months without symptoms or treatment. “May” is important: this is not an automatic reinstatement or a guarantee that a future claim will be covered. Ask for the applicable policy language and any written determination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When completing an application, answer health-history questions accurately and preserve prior records. Omitting a symptom can create confusion during underwriting or claims review. A pre-existing exclusion usually concerns the condition and related signs, not merely the name written on a particular invoice, so ask how the policy defines related or recurring problems.

Use a medical-history review to identify likely exclusions

After purchase, Embrace says a customer can request a free medical-history review. The review uses records from the 12 months before the policy start date, or the available history for a newly acquired pet. If the pet had no veterinary visit during the preceding 12 months, the FAQ says a full physical examination is due within the first 14 days of the policy.

  1. Enroll and save the issued policy, declarations page and effective dates.
  2. Request the medical-history review through the customer account or the process described by Embrace.
  3. Provide complete records, including records from clinics, emergency hospitals and specialists.
  4. Read each listed exclusion and compare it with the condition you are concerned about.
  5. Keep the review with your policy, but remember that a later claim is still decided under the policy terms and the facts documented at that time.

The review can make likely exclusions clearer; it does not convert an excluded condition into a covered one and is not a substitute for the state policy form. If the review identifies an exclusion you do not understand, ask what diagnosis, body part or related signs it encompasses and keep the answer in writing.

Common exclusions in Embrace’s public summary

Embrace’s FAQ gives a summary rather than an exhaustive exclusions list. It identifies the following categories as generally excluded:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pre-existing conditions.
  • Breeding, pregnancy and whelping.
  • Intentionally caused injury.
  • Injury or illness resulting from fighting, racing, cruelty or neglect.
  • Cosmetic procedures unless medically necessary.
  • DNA testing or cloning.
  • Stem-cell therapy that is not deemed medically necessary.

The complete exclusions, definitions and exceptions are in the policy terms and any state endorsement. A service can be medically sensible and still excluded, limited or subject to a waiting period. When a proposed treatment is costly, ask whether preauthorization or a written coverage review is available and verify the answer against your policy.

Enrollment and document checklist

Before enrolling, gather your pet’s identifying information, recent veterinary records and your address. Compare quotes using the same deductible, reimbursement percentage, annual maximum and optional benefits; otherwise a lower premium may simply reflect less protection. Confirm that the policy is available in your state and that your pet meets the application requirements shown in the quote process.

After purchase, save the quote, declarations page, full policy form, state endorsement, payment confirmation and any underwriting or medical-history correspondence. Check that the pet’s name, species, age, effective date and selected settings are correct. Note the illness and orthopedic waiting-period dates in a calendar. These records make it easier to explain a claim and identify whether a difference is caused by a quote, an issued policy or a later endorsement.

How claims work in practice

Embrace says you may visit any licensed veterinarian or emergency clinic in the United States; there is no insurance network to select from. The normal cash-flow sequence is different from direct-pay health insurance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Receive care and pay the clinic. You generally pay the veterinarian or emergency facility at the time of service.
  2. Collect a complete invoice. Make sure it identifies the pet, date of service, diagnoses or reason for treatment, procedures, medications and amounts paid.
  3. Submit the claim. Embrace says invoices can be submitted through its app or online portal.
  4. Wait for the coverage decision. Reimbursement is based on eligible expenses after the deductible, at your selected percentage, and within the annual maximum.
  5. Track the payment. Embrace says payment can be deposited into your bank account; retain the explanation of benefits and claim correspondence.

Embrace states that “90%+ of claims are paid within 10 business days.” That is a company-published statistic from its undated enrollment page viewed in 2026, not a promise that any particular claim will be paid within that period. Missing records, complex medical histories, eligibility questions or a request for additional information can affect timing.

Because you generally pay first, maintain an emergency fund or other way to cover the clinic’s bill while a claim is reviewed. Ask the veterinarian for itemized documents before leaving, especially when emergency or specialty care involves several services. Submit all requested pages together when possible and keep confirmation that the portal or app accepted the claim.

Costs, quotes and the information that changes them

Do not treat a sample premium as a national price. Embrace says premiums vary with factors such as the pet and location and with the coverage selected. The deductible, reimbursement percentage, annual maximum, optional add-ons and any available discount can all change the quote. State availability, rates, underwriting approval and discounts may also vary.

Before accepting a quote, save the version showing the selected settings and effective date. Then compare it with the issued declarations page. If the approved terms differ from what you expected, resolve the difference before assuming a condition or service is insured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate the premium alongside likely out-of-pocket exposure. A lower deductible generally means you take on less initial expense but may pay a different premium; a higher reimbursement rate can still leave substantial bills when the annual maximum is low. Use your own emergency savings, the pet’s age and health history, and the cost of specialty care in your area when deciding what combination is sustainable. The public pages do not establish a universal price or a best setting for every household.

Wellness Rewards versus insurance

Wellness Rewards is designed for eligible routine spending, while accident-and-illness insurance addresses covered unexpected treatment. The membership has a separate annual maximum and its own terms. It is not an insurance contract, and the coverage disclosure warns that ending it before the 12-month membership period can leave outstanding fees. It is also unavailable in Rhode Island according to the cited disclosure.

List the preventive expenses you actually expect—such as examinations, vaccinations or other routine items described in the current membership terms—and compare that total with the membership allowance and fee. Do not buy it solely because you assume it will reduce the cost of an emergency illness claim; it does not change the insurance policy’s deductible, waiting periods or exclusions.

A practical comparison checklist

Whether you are comparing Embrace options or another insurer, evaluate the same axes. This produces a more useful decision than ranking plans by one headline number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis What to verify
Covered conditions and exclusions Accident and illness definitions, dental rules, chronic-condition treatment, behavioral or rehabilitation coverage, and the full exclusions list.
Waiting periods General illness period, accident start date, and any dog orthopedic period applicable in your state.
Deductible Amount, whether it resets each policy term, and how it applies across claims.
Reimbursement Percentage applied after the deductible and the definition of eligible expenses.
Annual maximum Maximum insurer reimbursement in the policy year and any sublimits.
Add-ons Whether exam-fee or prescription options are offered, and their extra cost and limits.
Routine care Whether preventive spending is excluded, insured, or handled through a separate membership with its own terms.
Claims process Who pays the clinic, submission method, documentation requirements and stated processing times.
Total premium Quote for your pet, address, selected settings and any recurring discount conditions.

Available information does not establish that one configuration is best for every pet. A lower premium may come with a higher deductible or annual maximum that is less suitable for your emergency fund; a higher reimbursement percentage may not offset a low annual limit or broad exclusions.

Questions to settle before enrollment

  • What are the exact effective date and illness waiting-period end date shown for my pet?
  • Does my state impose a separate orthopedic waiting period for dogs?
  • Which observations in my pet’s medical records could be treated as pre-existing?
  • What deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual maximum can I fund if a major claim occurs?
  • Are exam fees or prescription medications included, or would they require an available add-on?
  • Is routine care excluded from insurance, and would Wellness Rewards’ annual maximum match my expected preventive spending?
  • Which records must accompany an app or portal submission?
  • Where in the policy are state exclusions, endorsements and renewal terms stated?

What to do when a claim is questioned or denied

Check the reason against the policy

Read the explanation of benefits and locate the cited definition, exclusion, waiting period or annual-limit provision in your policy. A denial may concern eligibility, timing, documentation or exhaustion of the annual maximum rather than the diagnosis itself.

Correct missing information

Ask the clinic for an itemized invoice or medical records if the submission was incomplete. Submit the requested material through the channel Embrace identifies and keep confirmation of delivery.

Ask focused questions

Request the exact policy section used, the dates considered, the amount applied to your deductible or annual maximum, and whether additional records could change the review. Keep communications factual and written.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the policy’s review or appeal process

If you disagree, follow the reconsideration or appeal instructions in the policy and meet every deadline. State insurance rules and the issued policy—not a general web summary—govern any further dispute process.

Frequently asked questions

Is routine care covered?

No. Embrace’s accident-and-illness policy does not cover routine or preventive care. Wellness Rewards is a separate optional membership for eligible routine spending, with its own annual maximum and terms; it is not insurance and is unavailable in Rhode Island according to the cited disclosure.

What is not covered?

The public FAQ summarizes exclusions including pre-existing conditions, breeding, pregnancy and whelping, intentionally caused injury, injuries or illnesses related to fighting, racing, cruelty or neglect, cosmetic procedures unless medically necessary, DNA testing or cloning, and non-medically necessary stem-cell therapy. The policy form and state endorsement contain the complete list.

What is a pre-existing condition?

Embrace describes it broadly as an injury, illness or irregularity noted by you or a veterinarian before coverage began or before a waiting period ended. A formal diagnosis or veterinary visit is not required. A temporary condition may be reconsidered after 12 consecutive symptom-free and treatment-free months, but reconsideration is not automatic.

What is an annual deductible?

It is the amount you pay for eligible expenses before reimbursement begins. Embrace says the deductible is met once per policy term. Confirm how your policy applies it when there are several claims and whether the term resets on the policy anniversary.

What is an annual limit?

The annual maximum is the most the insurer will reimburse in a policy year after the deductible. Once that ceiling is reached, additional bills in that policy year are your responsibility, even if the treatment would otherwise meet the coverage definition.

What is a reimbursement percentage?

It is the covered share of eligible costs after the deductible. At 80%, you generally pay the remaining 20% of eligible expenses, subject to the annual maximum and the policy’s definitions, exclusions and limits.

Can I use any veterinarian?

Embrace says customers may use any licensed veterinarian or emergency clinic in the United States and do not need to select an insurance network. You generally pay the provider, then submit the invoice through the app or online portal for review.

When will a claim be paid?

Embrace states that more than 90% of claims are paid within 10 business days, according to its undated enrollment page viewed in 2026. That is a company-published statistic, not a guarantee for an individual claim. Missing records or complex eligibility questions can extend processing.

Important limits of public product summaries

Embrace’s website is useful for understanding the product’s general structure, but it is not your contract. The official disclosures state that terms, coverage, rates, discounts, underwriting approval and state availability may vary. Public pages do not establish an independent customer-experience rating, universal premium, or guaranteed claim outcome. Confirm current details in your state policy, quote, declarations page and account before making a coverage or budgeting decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is routine care covered?

No. Routine and preventive care are outside the accident-and-illness policy. Wellness Rewards is a separate optional membership with its own annual maximum and terms.

What is not covered?

The public summary lists pre-existing conditions, breeding, pregnancy and whelping, intentionally caused injury, certain conduct-related injuries or illnesses, non-medically necessary cosmetic procedures, DNA testing or cloning, and non-medically necessary stem-cell therapy. Read the full policy exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a pre-existing condition?

A sign, symptom, injury, illness or irregularity noted before coverage or before a waiting period ends may qualify, even without a diagnosis or veterinary visit.

What is an annual deductible?

The amount you are responsible for before reimbursement begins. Embrace says it is met once per policy term.

What is an annual limit?

The most the insurer will reimburse in a policy year after the deductible.

What is a reimbursement percentage?

The share of eligible expenses reimbursed after the deductible. An 80% rate generally leaves you responsible for 20%, subject to policy limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I visit any veterinarian?

Embrace says you may use any licensed U.S. veterinarian or emergency clinic. You generally pay the provider and submit the invoice for reimbursement.

How long do claims take?

Embrace says 90%+ of claims are paid within 10 business days, but this company-published figure is not a guarantee for a specific claim.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Embrace can help with eligible unexpected accident-and-illness costs, but coverage depends on the issued policy, state rules, waiting periods, exclusions and your selected deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual maximum. Review those terms, request the medical-history review, budget to pay the veterinarian first, and treat Wellness Rewards as a separate routine-care membership rather than insurance.
