Emergency Vet vs. Your Regular Vet: Where to Go When Your Pet Is Ill

Use your pet’s condition and access to care to choose: emergency hospital for severe signs or poisoning; regular vet for stable, less severe concerns.

If your pet is struggling to breathe, collapses, has a seizure, suffers severe trauma or bleeding, or may have been poisoned, contact an emergency veterinary hospital now. For a stable pet with mild or unclear symptoms, call your regular veterinarian for advice; that team knows your pet’s history and can help decide whether an appointment, monitoring, or emergency care is appropriate.

No symptom list can diagnose your pet or rule out danger. If your pet is rapidly worsening or you are unsure how serious the situation is, contact a veterinary professional promptly.

Which veterinary service should you contact?

Situation Best first contact What to expect
Severe or potentially life-threatening signs, or alarming rapid deterioration Emergency veterinary hospital Urgent assessment and, if needed, in-person examination. Call ahead when feasible so the clinic can prepare. ASPCA emergency-care guidance.
Pet is stable; symptoms are mild or unclear Your regular veterinarian, especially during normal hours The team can consider your pet’s medical history and advise whether to book an appointment, monitor, or seek emergency care. FDA guidance on whom to call.
Possible poisoning or harmful exposure Veterinarian, emergency hospital, or animal poison-control service—promptly Get exposure-specific advice; an animal may need an examination or treatment that a phone consultation cannot provide. ASPCA Poison Control.
Urgent problem and regular practice is closed or unreachable Follow the practice’s after-hours instructions or call a nearby emergency animal hospital An emergency hospital may be able to advise by phone or recommend an examination. FDA guidance.

When is it an emergency?

Seek emergency veterinary care now for signs such as difficulty breathing, collapse or loss of consciousness, seizures, severe trauma, choking, heatstroke, or excessive bleeding. Other alarming signs listed by the ASPCA include pale gums, rapid breathing, a weak or rapid pulse, changes in body temperature, difficulty standing, and apparent paralysis. This is a set of examples, not a complete checklist: a pet can need urgent care for a serious problem not named here.

Do not wait for a symptom list to tell you whether a pet is safe. If your animal is deteriorating quickly, seems severely unwell, or has experienced a dangerous event, contact an emergency hospital. If you can do so without delaying departure, call ahead so staff can prepare.

When should you call your regular veterinarian?

For a pet who is stable and has a less severe or unclear problem, call the regular practice for guidance. The FDA notes that your veterinarian knows your pet’s medical history and can give advice suited to that animal. The practice may recommend an appointment, monitoring, or emergency evaluation; the right choice depends on the signs and the pet’s circumstances.

A single episode of vomiting may be monitored in some circumstances, but it is not a universal reason to wait. UC Davis gives the example of one episode in an otherwise healthy adult pet that remains interactive and eats and drinks. Do not apply that example to repeated symptoms, a very young or frail animal, a pet with a known medical condition, or an animal that appears seriously unwell. Call a veterinary professional if you are uncertain.

What if your regular vet is closed?

Check your veterinary practice’s after-hours instructions. If the situation is urgent and you cannot reach the practice, call a nearby emergency animal hospital. The hospital may give phone guidance or recommend bringing your pet in; a phone call does not replace an examination when one is needed.

Make an after-hours plan before an emergency: ask your regular veterinarian what to do when the clinic is closed, and save the name, address, and phone number of a local emergency facility. ASPCA recommends keeping those details readily available.

What to do if your pet may have been poisoned

Contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or animal poison-control service promptly—even if your pet has no symptoms yet. A potentially dangerous exposure can be time-sensitive. Have the product packaging or label available and be ready to explain what the substance was, how much the pet may have encountered, when it happened, and information about your pet.

  • Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so.
  • Do not wait for symptoms to worsen before asking for advice.
  • If the pet is severely unwell, contact an emergency hospital rather than delaying care for a consultation.

ASPCA Poison Control describes its service as available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Check the service’s current page for contact and fee details, which can change. Poison control can help assess an exposure and advise on next steps, but it cannot provide hands-on veterinary treatment.

Getting your pet safely to care

First aid is not a substitute for veterinary treatment. Avoid actions that could injure a frightened or painful animal, and call the receiving clinic ahead when feasible. For an injured cat, ASPCA suggests gently placing the cat in an open-topped carrier or box, supporting the head and avoiding twisting the neck if spinal injury is possible. This is a transport suggestion for that situation, not treatment advice for every injury.

  • Keep your regular practice’s after-hours instructions and a nearby emergency clinic’s contact details accessible.
  • Keep a suitable carrier or box available for transport.
  • For a suspected exposure, bring the product packaging or label if it is safe to do so.

The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 pet first-aid brochure puts the limit plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”
