Reduce stable odors by removing manure and wet bedding routinely, keeping stalls clean and dry, improving safe air circulation, and managing manure storage away from visitor routes. Avoid covering smells with fragrance: source control protects visitors’ comfort without adding an unassessed product to the horses’ environment.
Start by finding and removing the odor source
Check stalls, wet bedding, drains, manure piles, and storage areas. Remove manure and soiled bedding on a consistent schedule, and make sure each horse has clean, dry bedding. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) says stalls should be cleaned at least once every 24 hours in its Care Guidelines for Equine Rescue and Retirement Facilities. A busy stable or damp conditions may call for more frequent attention.
Choose bedding for cleanliness, dryness, drainage, dust exposure, and the needs of each horse. AAEP respiratory-management guidance discusses wood shavings and a pelleted diet in the context of reducing respirable particles; that does not establish that a particular bedding type eliminates odor or suits every horse.
Improve ventilation without creating an uncomfortable environment
Good ventilation is necessary in stalls, according to AAEP facility guidance. Its biosecurity guidance also links improved air circulation and ventilation with lower ammonia levels and potentially less transmission of respiratory and airborne pathogens. Use the barn’s designed ventilation, doors, and windows to support air exchange when weather, security, and horse comfort allow. The aim is not to create drafts or expose horses to unsuitable conditions; adapt airflow to the building and circumstances.

Keep manure handling from undoing the work
Move removed manure and soiled bedding to a collection or storage area where odors will not linger beside visitor routes. AAEP advises managing waste to minimize negative effects on the surrounding area and environment as reasonably possible. Local rules and site drainage can affect suitable storage and disposal choices.
Time dusty work around horses and visitors
Stall cleaning and hay handling can raise dust. When practical, do dusty work before visitors arrive and when horses can be safely out of the affected area. AAEP respiratory-management guidance recommends removing horses while stalls are cleaned and promoting ventilation; an AAEP article also cautions against using blowers around horses. Keep safe handling and the horses’ normal care routine in view when scheduling work.

Do not mask odors with an unassessed product
The available AAEP materials do not establish a universal horse-safe fragrance, spray, or deodorizer for stable use. A scented product does not remove the waste or ventilation issue causing an odor. If you are considering a chemical treatment in an occupied barn, read its label and consult an equine veterinarian about the specific product and exposure conditions.
When persistent odor or respiratory signs need attention
There is no universal odor threshold or single test in the cited materials that distinguishes ordinary manure odor from a ventilation problem. If odor persists despite routine cleaning and improved airflow, review the facility’s stalls, drainage, ventilation, and manure-storage arrangement.

If a horse develops coughing, nasal discharge, labored breathing, or another concerning sign, contact an equine veterinarian rather than treating the situation as a visitor-comfort issue. Odor alone does not diagnose a horse’s condition.

AAEP’s Principles of Equine Welfare, revised in 2023, states: “Equids should be cared for in ways that minimize fear, pain, distress and suffering.” In practice, that means addressing stable smells through routine care and appropriate airflow, while considering each horse’s comfort and health—not introducing a scent or treatment simply to make the barn smell different.
