Emperor cichlids (Boulengerochromis microlepis) are not ordinary home-aquarium fish. This Lake Tanganyika endemic is the largest living cichlid listed by FishBase, with a reported maximum of 80 cm and 4,500 g. Specialist aquarium references discuss systems from at least 1,500 L to a 5,000 L installation measuring 400 cm, and one of those references says the species is generally unsuitable for most aquariums. Treat the decision as a facility-scale commitment, not a routine upgrade from a standard African-cichlid tank.
The safest way to evaluate one is to plan around the adult, not the juvenile offered for sale. Size, prey requirements, aggression, brood defense, transport and the consequences of a multi-thousand-litre failure all matter before purchase. A large tank alone does not make this a simple fish to keep.

What an emperor cichlid is
Boulengerochromis microlepis is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and is distributed throughout the lake. FishBase records it as the giant cichlid. The common name “emperor cichlid” can make it sound like a colorful community fish, but its adult size, predatory diet and breeding aggression place it in a very different category from the smaller Tanganyikan species commonly kept in home aquariums.
Lake Tanganyika habitat is not uniform. Tanganyika.si describes adults using deeper, sandy areas for much of their lives, then moving into shallower intermediate habitat to spawn. The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register also describes open sand with rocky structures. A captive display therefore needs uninterrupted swimming space rather than a densely decorated rock maze.
#1 Best Overall
- CICHLID FORMULATION: These protein-rich flakes are specially designed for use as a staple food for top- and mid-water cichlids.
- FOR DAILY FEEDING: Nutritionally balanced diet for optimal health, color and vitality – supports a long life.
- PROCARE FORMULA: Helps support fish’s immune system for optimal health and long life.
- CLEAR-WATER FORMULA: Will not cloud water when used as directed.
- CONTAINS BIOTIN: Helps maintain a healthy metabolism.
That habitat description also explains why a visually impressive pile of rocks is not automatically good design. The fish needs room to turn, accelerate and establish a defended area. Rockwork should frame the open zone, not divide it into a series of tight passages. Because adults can become extremely large, even routine observation is easier when the fish is visible against an uncluttered background.
How large does an emperor cichlid become?
| Source | Reported size | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| FishBase | Maximum 80 cm total length; 4,500 g | A recorded maximum, not a promise that every specimen reaches it |
| Tanganyika.si | Males commonly about 70 cm and may exceed 3 kg; females typically about 50 cm | Typical sex-linked figures reported by that species profile |
Total length includes the tail. The difference between a commonly reported 50–70 cm adult and an 80 cm maximum is important when planning an aquarium: a tank that appears adequate for a juvenile can become unusable as the fish grows. Sex-based figures are descriptions from Tanganyika.si, not a guarantee for an individual fish.
Weight matters as much as length. A fish several dozen centimetres long is difficult to net, lift or restrain safely, and an adult weighing several kilograms can damage fittings or injure a handler if it panics. Covers, access panels, pipework and lifting equipment should be selected for that eventual mass rather than the size at purchase.

Growth can outpace ordinary aquarium planning
Tanganyika.si describes rapid growth: approximately 20 cm during the first year and 40–50 cm during the second. Those figures are source-reported observations rather than a validated growth curve for every captive population. They do, however, explain why buying a small juvenile without an adult housing plan is risky. The fish can become too large for a conventional aquarium before the keeper has arranged a suitable permanent system.
Ask a seller for the fish’s current length, approximate age and feeding history, but do not use a growth estimate to postpone permanent planning. A juvenile may fit in a temporary aquarium while still requiring a stable, cycled system and a route into the final installation. Rehoming a rapidly growing predator is not a dependable safety valve.
How much aquarium space is required?
There is no single universally accepted minimum in the cited hobby references. Their recommendations differ substantially, and both emphasize that the species is unsuitable for most ordinary aquariums.
| Source | Stated aquarium guidance | Additional caution |
|---|---|---|
| Tanganyika.si | At least 1,500 L for long-term maintenance | Requires extensive open swimming space |
| Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register | 5,000 L, with a listed 400 cm dimension | The register says the fish is usually unsuitable because of its size |
These are specialist-source recommendations, not a standardized regulatory minimum. The 5,000 L and 400 cm entry should be understood as that register’s stated figure, not as proof that every 400 cm aquarium is appropriate. Conversely, 1,500 L should not be treated as permission to use a cramped, narrow or temporary tank. Footprint, swimming length, structural strength, access for maintenance and the ability to move an adult fish all matter alongside volume.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Volume is only one screening number. Two aquariums can hold the same litres while offering very different usable swimming length. A long, open footprint is more relevant to this active fish than a tall, narrow vessel with little turning room. Plan the permanent dimensions, filtration space, drains, electrical circuits and emergency access before the animal arrives.
Design priorities for a permanent system
- Open length and width: Reserve a large, unobstructed central area for cruising. Avoid filling the footprint with rock piles, ornaments or narrow passages.
- Fine sand: A sandy substrate reflects the open-bottom habitat described for the species and gives a pair material for shallow spawning craters.
- Smooth rockwork: Use stable, rounded rocks to provide boundaries and spawning surfaces without creating sharp edges or blocking movement.
- Structural planning: A multi-thousand-litre aquarium contains several tonnes of water before glass, stand and décor are counted. Have the floor, stand, drainage and access assessed before acquiring the fish.
- Long-term access: Leave enough working room to net, examine or relocate a very large, powerful predator. A layout that cannot be safely reached is not a practical layout.
- Secure cover: Large fish can surge when startled. Covers and service openings must remain secure while still allowing safe handling and maintenance.
- Separation capacity: Include a way to isolate an injured, aggressive or newly introduced fish without tearing apart the display.
The cited material does not establish a species-specific filtration turnover target, filter model, maintenance interval or acclimation procedure. Those decisions must be engineered for the actual system, bioload and local water conditions rather than copied from a generic cichlid recipe.
Water temperature and pH
The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register lists 24–27.5 °C and pH 8.8–9.3. These are hobby-register figures, not a primary environmental measurement series for Lake Tanganyika. Use them as the published range from that register, and verify the operating plan with an aquatic veterinarian or experienced large-cichlid specialist.
| Parameter | Register range | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–27.5 °C | Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet hobby-register value |
| pH | 8.8–9.3 | Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet hobby-register value |
The available species profiles do not provide a corroborated schedule for testing, water changes, hardness, alkalinity, ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Do not infer those missing specifications from the pH range. Establish a test-and-maintenance program appropriate to the volume and feeding load, and document stable readings before introducing a fish.

What does an emperor cichlid eat?
This species is carnivorous. Adults are strictly piscivorous and take fish they can swallow. A prey fish that fits in an adult’s mouth is a potential meal, not a safe companion. Juveniles up to roughly 20 cm also eat larger invertebrates, but their diet shifts toward fish as they mature.
| Life stage | Diet described by the species profiles | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Juveniles up to about 20 cm | Fish plus larger invertebrates | Food size must match the juvenile’s mouth and growth stage |
| Adults | Strictly piscivorous | Only appropriately sized, nutritionally controlled prey is suitable |
No validated captive feeding schedule or commercial-food regimen was established in the cited material. Do not assume that a particular pellet brand, feeding frequency or live-food routine is proven for this species. Plan feeding around body condition, growth and water quality, and obtain professional guidance before selecting a staple diet. Overfeeding a giant predator can rapidly increase waste production in an already demanding system.
Food should never be chosen solely because it is available or small enough to swallow. The keeper must account for nutritional control, disease risk, storage and the effect of uneaten food on water quality. Observe the fish during meals and remove leftovers promptly. A large fish that refuses food, spits prey or changes body condition needs investigation rather than automatic increases in ration size.
Can emperor cichlids live with other fish?
Do not plan this fish as a conventional community inhabitant. Its adult mouth size and piscivorous behavior make small or medium tankmates unsafe. Any fish that can be swallowed is prey-sized, regardless of whether it has lived peacefully with the juvenile.
Tanganyika.si describes the species as very aggressive, especially between males and during care of eggs or fry. The combination of predation, adult size and territorial defense means that adding “compatible” community species is not a reliable strategy. A solitary specimen or a purpose-built large display may be more realistic than a mixed community, but even that decision requires a system with enough space to prevent continuous conflict.
Tankmate screening
- Reject any proposed companion that could fit in the emperor cichlid’s mouth.
- Do not use peaceful small Tanganyikan cichlids as dither fish or cleaners.
- Do not count juvenile coexistence as proof of adult compatibility.
- Have a permanent separation plan before attempting to keep more than one large fish.
- Provide independent capture and holding capacity in case aggression escalates.
- Never introduce a new fish without a way to remove it immediately if chasing, biting or sustained intimidation begins.
Even fish that are too large to swallow may be injured by territorial attacks. A mixed display therefore requires more than matching adult body length; it requires enough open area and independent holding space to manage conflict. The cited profiles do not identify a proven community combination, so no species list should be presented as safe by default.
Behavior and daily activity
Adults use open space rather than weaving through dense rockwork. Expect a powerful, active fish that can dominate the visual field of a large aquarium. Aggression is most pronounced between males and when a pair is guarding a clutch. A keeper should be able to observe the fish from several angles, identify injuries quickly and intervene without dismantling the entire habitat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause the species grows quickly and can exceed half a metre, routine tasks change with age. Nets, lids, hoses and access panels that work for a 10 cm juvenile may be inadequate for an adult. Design the system around the adult’s strength and turning radius from the beginning.
Daily observation should include appetite, breathing effort, swimming balance, wounds and changes in how fish use the open area. A sudden retreat, persistent surface activity or repeated collisions with décor may indicate a problem with water quality, equipment or social pressure, but the profiles do not provide a diagnostic protocol. Record changes and consult an aquatic veterinarian when they persist.
Breeding: substrate spawning with intense parental defense
Emperor cichlids are substrate spawners. Eggs may be deposited on flat stones, in shells or in shallow craters excavated in sand. Both parents guard the brood. Tanganyika.si reports clutches of approximately 5,000–12,000 eggs, and says parents may stop feeding while caring for eggs or fry. The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register likewise describes sand-pit spawning and defense of a very large clutch.
What a breeding setup must accommodate
- Spawning surface: Include a stable flat stone or suitable open sandy area that can be defended.
- Clear boundaries: Keep décor from forcing the pair into a narrow corridor where one parent cannot retreat.
- Brood-defense zone: Assume the parents will treat a large area as their territory and attack intruders.
- Fry numbers: A clutch of thousands is a logistical problem, not simply an exciting observation. Arrange grow-out space and responsible placement before encouraging spawning.
- Feeding observation: Monitor adults closely because the cited profile reports reduced or absent feeding during brood care.
- Emergency separation: Have a second adequately sized holding system ready if one parent is injured or the pair turns on other fish.
Breeding should not be attempted as a casual project in a mixed tank. The combination of a very large clutch, parental aggression and adult body size can overwhelm both the aquarium and the keeper’s ability to separate fish.
A spawning pair also changes the practical footprint of the aquarium: an area that was previously shared may become a defended zone. Watch for escalating attacks rather than waiting for visible wounds. Because the reported clutch can number in the thousands, decide in advance how fry will be housed and placed; do not assume a local store or hobbyist network can accept them.

Is an emperor cichlid suitable for a home aquarium?
For most private aquariums, no. The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register explicitly describes the fish as generally unsuitable because of its size. Even the lower cited long-term recommendation is 1,500 L, while another specialist register lists 5,000 L and a 400 cm dimension. Those scales are far beyond standard home setups.
A realistic suitability checklist
- You already have, or can responsibly build, a permanent system in the multi-thousand-litre range.
- The floor, stand, electrical supply, drainage and access route have been professionally considered.
- You can house an adult of roughly 50–80 cm, not merely a juvenile.
- You have a feeding and waste-management plan for a large piscivore.
- You can isolate fish immediately if aggression or predation occurs.
- You have a plan for thousands of fry if breeding occurs.
- You have confirmed that possession, transport and import are lawful where you live.
- You can provide long-term care even if the fish grows faster than expected.
- You have people and equipment to move a heavy fish safely during maintenance or emergencies.
- You can fund ongoing operation, not just the initial aquarium construction.
If several answers are no, choose a smaller Tanganyikan species whose adult dimensions match your existing aquarium rather than hoping to rehome an emperor cichlid later. A temporary juvenile tank is not a substitute for a permanent plan.
Acquiring, transporting and housing a juvenile
A juvenile’s small size is temporary. Before purchase, measure the route from the delivery point to the permanent aquarium, including doors, stairs and turns. A fish that may reach 70–80 cm requires transport equipment and lifting assistance appropriate to its future size. Keep the receiving system fully cycled and stable, with the open swimming area and secure rockwork already in place.
Recommended Free Tools
Confirm the specimen’s identity, current size and feeding history with the seller. Do not buy first and investigate the final home afterward. Arrange a suitable receiving container, secure lid and enough help for transfer; the equipment that safely handles a juvenile may not handle an adult. Plan quarantine or veterinary assessment according to local professional advice, since no species-specific acclimation sequence was established in the cited material.
Current trade availability and legal or import requirements vary by date and jurisdiction and were not established in the cited material. Contact the relevant wildlife, fisheries or customs authority for your location before arranging a purchase or shipment. Do not rely on a seller’s assumption that a species is legal to import or keep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Health, observation and maintenance boundaries
The species profiles do not provide a disease list, preventive-treatment protocol, acclimation sequence or maintenance timetable. Avoid applying medication or salt routines by guesswork. Observe appetite, respiration, swimming balance, skin and fin condition, and social behavior every day, then seek an aquatic veterinarian when a change persists or an injury follows aggression.
Large predatory fish produce substantial waste, but the available references do not establish a validated filtration rate or water-change percentage for this species. Build redundancy into pumps and biological filtration, install alarms where appropriate, and base maintenance on measured water quality and actual feeding load. Keep backup aeration and a separate holding system available for equipment failure or emergency separation.
Maintenance access should be tested before stocking. You need a safe way to inspect equipment, clean surfaces, remove uneaten food and move a fish without standing over an unstable pile of décor. Document who will respond to a power outage, leak or pump failure, particularly if the aquarium is located in a living space or public-facing room.
Conservation context
FishBase’s summary lists Boulengerochromis microlepis as Near Threatened, with an assessment dated 12 March 2025. That status and date are FishBase’s assessment entry. It is a reason to verify legal sourcing and avoid impulsive purchases, not a basis for adding unverified claims about why the species received that listing.
Ask for lawful, traceable sourcing and retain purchase and transport records. A conservation listing does not by itself answer whether a specimen is legal in a particular country, so local authorities remain the appropriate source for current rules.

What size tank does a giant Tanganyika cichlid need?
Tanganyika.si recommends at least 1,500 L for long-term maintenance. The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register lists 5,000 L with a 400 cm dimension and says the fish is generally unsuitable for most aquariums. Because the recommendations differ, treat them as specialist guidance rather than one universal minimum.
Can emperor cichlids live with other fish?
They should not be treated as community fish. Adults eat fish they can swallow, and the species is reported to be very aggressive, especially between males and during brood care. Any mixed display requires exceptional space and an immediate separation plan; no routine community combination is established here.
What does Boulengerochromis microlepis eat?
Adults are strictly piscivorous. Juveniles up to about 20 cm also take larger invertebrates. The cited profiles do not establish a validated captive feeding schedule or commercial-food regimen, so obtain specialist or veterinary guidance before selecting a staple diet.

Usually not. The cited recommendations range from 1,500 L to a 5,000 L, 400 cm register entry, and one register explicitly calls the species generally unsuitable because of its size. Only a purpose-built, multi-thousand-litre installation with a lifetime plan is a realistic prospect.
How many eggs can a pair produce?
Tanganyika.si reports approximately 5,000–12,000 eggs per clutch. Both parents guard the brood, and parents may stop feeding while caring for eggs or fry. Anyone considering breeding needs grow-out space and a responsible placement plan before spawning occurs.
What water temperature and pH are listed?
The Nordiska Ciklidsällskapet register lists 24–27.5 °C and pH 8.8–9.3. These are hobby-register values, not a complete species-specific water-quality protocol. The cited material does not establish hardness, alkalinity, nutrient limits, testing frequency or water-change percentages.
Decision summary
An emperor cichlid is a lake-wide Tanganyika giant with an adult scale of roughly 50–80 cm in the cited sources, a strictly piscivorous adult diet and strong parental aggression. Specialist guidance spans at least 1,500 L to a 5,000 L, 400 cm register entry, so no single number should be treated as a universal minimum. Unless you can provide a purpose-built, multi-thousand-litre installation and a lifetime plan for feeding, aggression, breeding and legal ownership, this species is not a responsible choice for a normal home aquarium.
