Enchantment by Birds: A History of Australian Birdwatching in 22 Species is a cultural history, not a field-identification manual. Russell McGregor uses 22 Australian birds to follow the people, arguments, technologies and pleasures that have shaped birdwatching: collecting and naming, shooting and photographing, field guides, conservation, citizen science, tourism and the communities built around seeing birds.

The result is an accessible, wide-ranging book about what birding means as well as what birds are. Its thematic method gives readers a richer explanation of Australian birdwatching than a chronological survey would, although Donna Lynn Schulman notes that the balance between historical detail and interpretation is occasionally uneven.

What is Enchantment by Birds about?

McGregor tells the history of Australian birdwatching through 22 species. Each bird opens onto a larger subject, so the chapters are not conventional species accounts. A kookaburra can lead into questions about national identity and popular familiarity; a bowerbird can introduce display, collecting and the ways observers have interpreted bird behaviour. The species are doors into human history rather than destinations in themselves.

The book’s structure consists of a bird-named preface followed by 21 chapters. Chapter titles pair a species with a single-word theme, creating a promise that the bird and the idea will illuminate each other. The approach is deliberately discursive. McGregor follows people and practices across time when a story demands it instead of forcing every chapter into the same chronology or scientific format.

That design explains both the book’s appeal and its occasional unevenness. Readers who want a continuous timeline of Australian ornithology will find a more associative narrative. Readers interested in why people watch, classify, collect, protect and enjoy birds will find the structure unusually revealing.

How the 22 birds function as historical guides

Species as entry points, not isolated portraits

The birds are recurring points of orientation. They give each chapter a concrete subject while allowing McGregor to discuss institutions, personalities and changing assumptions. A species may appear because of its cultural visibility, its scientific history, its conservation story or the distinctive way people encounter it. The chapter then follows the relevant human trail.

This means the book does not try to provide a complete natural-history profile for every bird. Habitat maps, diagnostic plumage descriptions and exhaustive distribution data are not its organizing principles. The relevant question is what a bird reveals about observers and the social world around observation.

A deliberately opportunistic path

Schulman describes the preface as presenting chapters that emulate birders’ opportunistic habits: a new species or theme comes into view, and attention follows it. That metaphor captures the book’s movement. McGregor can shift from a field observer to a museum collection, from a naming dispute to a conservation campaign, when those subjects belong to the bird under discussion.

The method also makes room for contradiction. Birdwatching has never been a single, settled practice. Scientific collecting, recreational shooting, egg collecting, photography, tourism and conservation have overlapped, sometimes uneasily. A thematic chapter can place those conflicting activities beside one another instead of treating history as a simple march toward modern environmental awareness.

The major histories inside the book

From guns and specimens to cameras and observation

One of the book’s central transitions is the movement from taking birds to observing them. Earlier ornithological and sporting cultures could involve shooting birds, preserving skins and assembling collections. Later birding increasingly valued field observation, photography and leaving birds alive in their habitats.

McGregor treats that change as a history of practice and ethics, not merely a technological upgrade. Cameras made it possible to document a sighting without killing the subject, while improved optics and field guides supported identification in the field. Yet older specimens and collections remain important sources for scientific knowledge. The story is therefore complicated: practices that modern birders may reject helped establish the records on which later conservation and taxonomy depend.

Eggs, skins and the ethics of collecting

Collecting eggs and skins raises questions that still matter to museums, researchers and birders. Who had the authority to remove material from the wild? When did a collection serve science, and when did it become private accumulation? How should present-day readers judge actions that were accepted, or even praised, in an earlier period?

The book uses these issues to show that birdwatching has always involved choices about access, ownership and harm. Its historical perspective avoids presenting ethics as a fixed list of rules. Instead, it asks readers to see how standards changed as knowledge, conservation concerns and public expectations changed.

Names, classification and the power to define

Naming disputes are another route into the history of authority. Common names can carry regional, cultural or colonial meanings; scientific names can change when taxonomic evidence changes. Deciding what to call a bird is not a neutral exercise when names determine which traditions are recognized and which records are connected.

By following arguments over names, McGregor shows that classification is also communication. Field observers need stable labels, scientists revise relationships, and communities may value names that do not fit neatly into a single system. The disputes help explain why field guides and checklists are influential cultural objects as well as practical tools.

Field guides and the democratization of expertise

The development of field guides changed who could participate in bird study. Identification knowledge that once depended on specialist collections or formal training became more portable. A guide could be carried outdoors, consulted quickly and shared among beginners and experts.

McGregor connects guides to a broader shift in authority. Expertise did not disappear; it moved into new forms, including illustrations, distribution maps, standardized names and advice on distinguishing similar species. The modern birder’s confidence often rests on an infrastructure built by authors, artists, printers, museums and generations of observers.

Conservation: successes, failures and unfinished work

The species stories also trace conservation’s mixed record. Some campaigns have protected habitat, changed public attitudes or helped species recover. Other birds expose the costs of delayed action, habitat loss or inadequate policy. Presenting successes beside failures prevents a comforting account in which awareness automatically produces protection.

Conservation appears as a social practice involving scientists, governments, landholders, clubs, photographers and volunteers. Birdwatchers contribute records and advocacy, but the book does not suggest that enthusiasm alone solves ecological problems. The historical examples show why evidence, institutions and long-term stewardship matter.

Citizen science and the value of shared records

Birding’s observational culture feeds citizen science. Repeated sightings, local knowledge and coordinated surveys can create information no small professional team could gather on its own. The legitimacy of those records depends on careful identification, transparent methods and systems for checking observations.

McGregor places this work in the longer history of amateurs and professionals. The boundary between the two has never been absolute: enthusiasts can make significant discoveries, while institutions provide standards and continuity. That partnership is one reason birdwatching has remained both a pastime and a source of useful environmental knowledge.

Tourism, access and the economics of seeing birds

Birding tourism turns observation into travel. People plan journeys around rare species, distinctive habitats or renowned sites, creating local income and new incentives to protect places. Travel can also bring pressure: concentrated visitors may disturb birds, and the benefits of tourism are not automatically shared fairly.

The tourism theme broadens the book beyond clubs and field outings. It asks what happens when a private pleasure becomes an organized industry, and how the desire to see a particular bird shapes landscapes, itineraries and local communities.

Community and the pleasure of looking

Not every chapter is about conflict or institutional change. Birdwatching is also a source of friendship, routine and delight. Clubs, informal groups and shared sightings give observers a vocabulary for experiences that might otherwise remain private.

The book takes that pleasure seriously. Enjoyment is not treated as an embarrassment to be hidden behind scientific language. It is one of the reasons people learn difficult identifications, return to the same wetlands, keep records and support conservation. The emotional bond with birds is part of birding’s history, not an optional extra.

Birds highlighted in the narrative

The subtitle promises 22 species, and the named examples indicate the range of the project. The Laughing Kookaburra and Galah are familiar birds with strong places in Australian popular culture. The Tooth-billed Bowerbird opens a path toward specialized behaviour and the fascination of display. The Paradise Parrot carries the weight of loss and conservation history. The Superb Fairywren represents the intimacy of close observation and the way a small, common bird can become a focus of sustained scientific and public attention.

These examples should not be read as a complete contents list. The important point is the range of scales: from birds recognized by millions of people to species known mainly through specialist interest, from living populations to stories shaped by disappearance. The selection lets McGregor move between everyday encounters and urgent conservation questions.

What reviewers praise—and where one review hesitates

Readable prose and a relaxed structure

The 2024 review in Australian Field Ornithology praises the book’s structure and relaxed writing style. It also notes that each chapter includes references, giving readers a route into the sources behind the narrative. That apparatus is useful for anyone who wants to continue into ornithological history, museum records or conservation literature without interrupting the main reading experience.

Schulman’s review for 10,000 Birds, published February 3, 2026, likewise calls the book highly readable overall. Her qualification is that the balance between historical detail and thematic analysis is sometimes uneven. In practice, that means some chapters may feel more richly contextualized than others, depending on how much history the chosen bird brings with it.

A continuing conversation about the book

An American Birding Association feature dated September 21, 2026, discusses Rick Wright’s review in the September 2026 issue of Birding. It characterizes the book as a story of human encounters with 22 species that opens into different aspects of Australian birding history. That description reinforces the book’s broad purpose: it is about relationships among people, birds and practices, not a sequence of isolated species essays.

What the book does better than a field guide

A field guide is built to solve an immediate identification problem: which bird is this, what marks distinguish it, where is it found and what similar species should be ruled out? Enchantment by Birds has a different job. It explains how the act of identification became meaningful, how names and guides acquired authority, and why birders developed particular habits.

Choose McGregor’s book when you want context around the activity of birding: its institutions, ethical arguments, technologies and communities. Choose an identification guide when you are outdoors and need diagnostic information quickly. The two formats complement each other, but they should not be judged by the same standard.

Edition and publication details

Pagination and ISBN information differ by territory, so identify the edition before ordering or citing the book. The Australian and U.S. details reported in reviews are separate editions, not figures to be combined.

Edition Publisher and date Format and length ISBN
Australian edition Scribe Publications, Melbourne, 2024 Softcover, 310 pages 9781761381447
U.S. edition Scribe, April 1, 2025 Paperback, 320 pages 978-1957363974

The difference in page count is an edition detail, not evidence that one version contains a different argument or an expanded study. Use the ISBN for the territory in which you are buying or cataloguing the book.

How to approach the book as a reader

Start with your own birding question

You do not need to read the chapters as a chronological course. If you are curious about field guides, begin with the chapters that touch naming and identification. If collecting and conservation concern you, follow the chapters that examine skins, eggs, shooting and protection. The bird-based titles make it easy to choose a starting point without losing the larger argument.

Keep the species and the theme together

Because a bird is an entry point, it helps to ask two questions in each chapter: what is distinctive about this species, and what human practice does it illuminate? That habit prevents the narrative from being mistaken for a set of conventional species profiles.

Use the chapter references

The references are part of the book’s value. They allow a curious reader to pursue the historical figures, collections, conservation episodes and scientific debates introduced in the prose. Readers who want a compact narrative can stay with the chapters; readers building a deeper reading list can use the references as a map.

Verdict

Enchantment by Birds succeeds because it treats birdwatching as a serious subject without draining it of pleasure. Its 22 species support stories about knowledge, violence, care, technology, travel and friendship. The thematic structure sometimes produces an uneven balance between detail and analysis, as Schulman observes, but that is a limitation of an ambitious method rather than a failure of purpose.

For anyone asking what Australian birdwatching has been—and why people continue to find it enchanting—McGregor offers an engaging historical answer. Read it alongside, rather than instead of, a field guide: one helps you identify the bird in front of you, while the other explains how that act of looking acquired its history and meaning.
