Equilibrio is a dry-food line with adult, kitten, sterilised/weight-control, hairball and salmon-preference formulas. It is not an automatic “good” or “bad” choice: the recipe, life-stage adequacy statement, your cat’s health and what is actually available in your country all matter. The published formulas combine named animal ingredients with grains, peas and other plant ingredients. Cats.com rated the brand 6.1/10 (C+) in a 2025 review, chiefly because of ingredient-quality and plant-protein concerns; that score is an editorial assessment, not an independent feeding trial or a veterinary verdict.
Equilibrio cat food at a glance
Equilibrio is presented as a French-manufactured dry cat-food brand founded in 2005 and owned by ADM, according to the Cats.com review. The technical sheets available from Equilibrio’s European site document four representative dry recipes: Adult Hairball Control, Kitten Natural Defences, Sterilised Weight Control and Preference with Salmon. Cats.com also describes physiologic and veterinary formulas marketed for obesity and diabetes, renal, urinary and intestinal needs, but it could not confirm which retail channels carry each type. Those therapeutic diets should be selected with a veterinarian rather than from a general online review.

The practical conclusion is conditional. If your cat does well on a dry diet and the exact package carries an appropriate complete-and-balanced statement for the intended life stage, an Equilibrio formula may be usable. However, the ingredient panels are not meat-only: the examples include rice, maize, wheat, peas, maize gluten and beet pulp alongside poultry, salmon, egg, fish oil and other animal-derived materials. The evidence does not establish clinical benefits, superior digestibility or suitability for an individual cat.

For a shopper, the package in your hand outranks an old web listing. Check the local label, adequacy statement, guaranteed analysis, feeding directions, lot information and importer details before buying.

The sheets do not by themselves prove that every package sold in every country has the same formulation, additives or nutritional-adequacy wording. Manufacturing dates, regional labels and reformulations can change details. Use the sheet as a reference and the current package as the purchasing document.
What ingredients are in Equilibrio?
Adult Hairball Control
The adult hairball-control sheet lists dehydrated poultry, rice, maize, peas, poultry fat, wheat, maize gluten, greaves, animal-protein hydrolysate, beet pulp, added fibers, egg, fish oil, psyllium and other additives. “Dehydrated” ingredients are concentrated after water removal, while “greaves” generally refers to rendered animal tissue left after fat extraction. The list therefore contains animal-derived ingredients as well as several cereal, legume and plant-fiber ingredients.
For hairball management, the presence of fiber sources and psyllium is relevant to the product’s design, but the sheet does not establish how much hair a cat will pass, whether vomiting will decrease or how the formula compares with another diet in a controlled trial. Persistent hairballs, repeated vomiting, constipation or appetite loss warrant a veterinary examination.
Kitten Natural Defences
The kitten recipe is described by Cats.com as containing poultry, grains and plant proteins. Its 35.0% crude protein and 20.0% crude fat figures are higher than the adult and sterilised examples, a pattern consistent with a more energy-dense growth diet. Those percentages still do not demonstrate that the food meets the nutrient profile required for every growth stage. Confirm that the local package explicitly says it is complete and balanced for kittens or growth.
Sterilised Weight Control
The sterilised formula lists 35.0% crude protein and 11.0% crude fat, the lowest fat figure among the four sheets. It is positioned for sterilised cats and weight control, but a lower listed fat percentage does not guarantee weight loss. Calorie density, portion size, treats, activity, neutering status and the cat’s individual metabolism determine the outcome. Weigh portions with a kitchen scale and monitor body condition with your veterinarian.

Preference with Salmon
The salmon sheet begins with dehydrated salmon and dehydrated poultry, then includes greaves, grains, peas and other ingredients. “With salmon” does not mean salmon is the only animal protein or that the food is appropriate for a fish-allergic cat. Read the complete local ingredient declaration if your cat has an allergy, intolerance or a prescribed elimination diet.
How to interpret the guaranteed analysis
Crude-protein and crude-fat percentages are useful starting points, not a complete quality score. They do not tell you the amino-acid profile, digestibility, calorie density, carbohydrate percentage, mineral balance or whether a food has passed a feeding trial. The Equilibrio figures above come from manufacturer technical sheets and should not be treated as independent laboratory measurements.
There is also a published discrepancy. The Cats.com review table reports 33% crude protein and 18% crude fat for Adult Hairball Control, while the retrieved official adult technical sheet reports 33.0% protein and 16.0% fat. Treat the current package label as authoritative for a purchase and do not merge the two fat figures.
Moisture changes the comparison
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that guaranteed analyses are generally presented on an as-fed basis. Dry and wet foods contain very different amounts of water, so comparing their printed percentages directly can mislead. Convert values to a dry-matter basis when moisture differs substantially. The basic calculation is:
dry-matter percentage = as-fed percentage ÷ (100 − moisture percentage) × 100

For example, a 33% protein value on a dry food with an assumed 10% moisture would be approximately 36.7% protein on a dry-matter basis (33 ÷ 90 × 100). That 10% moisture figure is an assumption used for illustration, not a guaranteed Equilibrio value; use the moisture listed on your own label. Is Equilibrio complete and balanced?
A percentage table cannot answer that question by itself. FDA guidance says a U.S. “complete and balanced” claim must be supported by meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or by passing an AAFCO feeding trial. The label should also identify the life stage covered, such as growth, adult maintenance or all life stages. A European technical sheet can document analytical constituents without proving compliance with U.S. labeling requirements.
Before feeding Equilibrio as your cat’s sole diet, look for:
- An explicit nutritional-adequacy statement for the cat’s life stage.
- The intended species and life-stage wording on the package sold in your country.
- Feeding directions and calorie information, if supplied.
- Manufacturer or importer contact information and a lot or batch code.
- Any qualification that the food is for intermittent, supplemental or veterinary use only.
If the statement is missing, unclear or written for a different market, ask the manufacturer or a veterinarian instead of assuming that the protein and mineral numbers establish adequacy. Cats with kidney disease, urinary disease, diabetes, intestinal disease or another diagnosed condition need individualized advice; a general retail formula is not automatically a substitute for a therapeutic diet.

The figures below are the manufacturer-sheet values. They are useful for seeing the intended positioning, but they do not predict how a particular cat will respond.

The table does not include calories because the supplied sheets and review do not establish a dependable, current calorie value for every formula. Do not infer calorie density from fat percentage alone.
Feeding directions, storage and transition
The Adult Hairball Control sheet gives indoor daily amounts of 29 g for a 2 kg cat, 44 g for 3 kg, 58 g for 4 kg and 73 g for 5 kg. These are manufacturer directions for that sheet, not universal requirements. They may not apply to kittens, highly active cats, overweight cats, mixed wet-and-dry feeding or a differently formulated regional package.

The same sheet says to keep the food closed in a cool, dry place and gives an 18-month shelf life after production when stored properly. Keep kibble in its original bag or a clean, airtight container, protect it from heat and humidity, and retain the lot code until the bag is finished. Discard food that is damp, rancid-smelling, moldy or contaminated.

- Record the current food, daily amount, stool quality and body weight.
- Offer a small amount of Equilibrio mixed with the familiar food for several days.
- Increase the new proportion gradually only if appetite and stools remain normal.
- Slow down or return to the previous ratio if vomiting, diarrhea or refusal develops.
- Measure the final daily portion rather than topping up the bowl indefinitely.
Sudden diet changes can cause gastrointestinal upset, but ongoing vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy or refusal to eat needs prompt veterinary care. Cats should not be left without food while an owner tries to force a transition.

Cats.com’s review, updated April 4, 2025, assigns Equilibrio 6.1 out of 10, or 37 out of 60, with a C+ grade. Its component scores are species-appropriateness 5/10, ingredient quality 4/10, product variety 6/10, price 7/10, customer experience 7/10 and recall history 8/10. These are the reviewer’s judgments, not population statistics, feeding-trial results or a veterinary consensus. The review criticizes the use of grains and plant proteins in the recipes it examined and notes that customer-review evidence was sparse.
The review also says it could not establish a dependable price because availability was limited. Its estimated carbohydrate figures used an assumed 10% moisture level, so they are estimates rather than manufacturer guarantees. Use the current package analysis and moisture value if you need to calculate carbohydrates.
Cats.com quotes the brand’s manufacturing and sourcing statement as follows: “EQUILIBRIO’s products are now manufactured in Europe (France) in compliance with the strictest regulations and are guaranteed GMO-free thanks to a rigorous choice of raw materials. You can be assured that your companion enjoys the safest possible pet food.” This is a statement reproduced by Cats.com, not an independently verified safety finding.

Recalls, safety and manufacturing claims
Cats.com writes, “To our knowledge, Equilibrio has not had a product recall to date,” while noting that its review was limited by the online information it could find. That wording is not a guarantee that no recall has ever occurred in every country or that a future recall cannot happen. Check the regulator and manufacturer in your market, and keep the lot number so a retailer or veterinarian can identify the product if a notice is issued.

The review reports manufacture in France and says the brand appears in limited European markets as well as Brazil, Angola, Portugal and the Philippines, usually through pet-specialty retailers and veterinary practices. This is a dated third-party description, not a current distribution map. Availability can differ by country, formula and importer.
Where can you buy Equilibrio?
Current U.S. stock, U.S. pricing and a verified U.S. retail listing were not established. Do not assume that a European technical sheet means the product is legally labeled or routinely distributed in the United States. In a country where Equilibrio is sold, start with a local pet-specialty retailer, veterinary practice or the brand’s current regional contact channel. Confirm the bag’s language, importer, adequacy statement, lot code and return policy.
Online listings can show an outdated recipe, a different country’s packaging or a third-party seller’s price. Compare the physical label with the technical sheet and ask the seller how the food was stored. If a therapeutic formula is recommended, purchase through the veterinary channel your clinician specifies and do not substitute a regular adult or sterilised recipe without approval.

For a healthy adult cat
Verify adult-maintenance adequacy, compare the ingredient list with your cat’s known sensitivities, calculate portions from the package directions and monitor body condition. The Adult Hairball Control and Preference with Salmon sheets are adult-oriented examples, but neither is proven superior for every healthy cat.
For a kitten
Use only a package explicitly labeled for kitten growth or the relevant all-life-stages claim. The kitten sheet’s 35.0% protein and 20.0% fat are product-sheet numbers, not proof of complete growth nutrition. Arrange regular weight checks and veterinary examinations during growth.
For a sterilised or overweight cat
The Sterilised Weight Control sheet lists 11.0% crude fat, but weight management still depends on calories, portions and activity. Have a veterinarian assess body condition, set a safe rate of loss and review progress. Never slash food abruptly without guidance.
For a cat with disease or a suspected allergy
Do not select a renal, urinary, intestinal, diabetic or “hypoallergenic” option from marketing language alone. A therapeutic diet may require specific mineral, energy, protein or ingredient controls that are not visible from the four general technical sheets. Your veterinarian can determine whether a formula is clinically appropriate.

- Does the exact package say “complete and balanced,” and for which life stage?
- Is the declaration for the country where you will feed it?
- Are the named animal ingredients acceptable for your cat’s allergies or elimination diet?
- What moisture and calorie information appears on the label?
- Are feeding amounts expressed for your cat’s expected adult weight and activity?
- Can the seller provide a recent lot, intact packaging and a clear return policy?
- What will you do if your cat refuses the food or develops gastrointestinal signs?
Overall verdict
Equilibrio is best viewed as a specialized dry-food range that requires label-level checking, not as a universally recommended or universally poor brand. Its documented recipes provide moderate-to-high listed protein, varying fat levels for different purposes and several named animal ingredients, but they also rely on grains, peas, plant proteins and rendered ingredients. Cats.com’s C+ assessment highlights those formulation concerns and the brand’s limited transparency and availability; it should be read as one reviewer’s evaluation.
Choose a formula only after confirming the local adequacy statement, life stage, moisture-aware analysis, feeding directions and availability. For kittens, weight problems or any medical condition, involve a veterinarian. If the current package differs from an older sheet or online listing, follow the current package and request clarification from the manufacturer.
