A Whippet is an athletic sighthound with a gentle, affectionate disposition and a short, low-maintenance coat. Many are calm indoors, but they need regular exercise and safe chances to run; use a lead outside a securely fenced area. They can live in an apartment when their individual exercise and care needs are met.
The central ownership rule is simple: live with your Whippet indoors, provide regular walks and vigorous play, and never assume that training alone makes this fast, prey-driven sighthound safe off leash in an unfenced area.
Whippet characteristics at a glance
| Characteristic | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Breed type | Medium-sized sighthound built for speed and work |
| Adult height | The American Kennel Club breed profile gives 18–22 inches at the shoulder. The UK Kennel Club standard gives desirable heights of 18½–20 inches for dogs and 17½–18½ inches for bitches; these are registry-specific guides. |
| Life expectancy | The American Whippet Club estimates that, with proper nutrition, exercise, and veterinary care, most Whippets live 12–15 years. This is not a promise for an individual dog. |
| Coat | Short, smooth, and low-maintenance; weekly brushing and occasional bathing are generally sufficient. |
| Temperament | Often gentle, affectionate, and calm at home, though individual behavior varies. |
| Exercise style | Regular walks and play, with safe opportunities for running suited to the dog’s age, health, and fitness. |
| Off-leash reliability | Do not assume reliability in unfenced areas; use a lead outside secure fencing. |
Breed standards and profile figures differ by registry, and ranges are guidance rather than promises about an individual Whippet. Age, health, conditioning, and breeding affect how a particular dog looks and behaves.
What is a Whippet’s temperament like?
The Kennel Club’s UK standard describes the ideal Whippet as having a “Gentle, affectionate, even disposition” and calls the breed “An ideal companion.” These describe the breed ideal, not a guarantee about every dog. Many Whippets are people-oriented house dogs and tend to be calm indoors after appropriate activity.

Young Whippets can be mischievous, agile, and energetic. The American Kennel Club notes that young dogs may jump and climb. Their intelligence can come with independence, so clear, consistent, reward-based training is useful.
Early socialization and training help develop confidence and household manners. Introduce a puppy gradually and positively to people, handling, household sounds, surfaces, calm dogs, travel, and veterinary care. Ask your veterinarian about appropriate puppy-class and public-outing timing for your dog.
Is a Whippet a good fit for your home?
Apartments and small homes
Whippets can live in apartments or larger homes if exercised appropriately, according to the American Kennel Club. The deciding factor is not simply the size of the living space, but whether you can provide regular walks, play, mental engagement, and safe running opportunities. A small home does not automatically suit every Whippet.
Apartment owners need a realistic exercise plan. A brief toilet walk is not the same as meaningful activity, but uncontrolled running near roads is not a safe substitute. Use a lead outside and arrange access to a securely fenced area for running when appropriate.

Many Whippets are gentle with familiar children, but no breed is universally suited to every family. Supervise interactions, teach children not to chase, grab, climb on, or disturb a resting dog, and give the Whippet a quiet retreat. A young, exuberant dog may knock over a small child or be overwhelmed by unpredictable handling.
Cats, small pets, and other dogs
Compatibility depends on the individual dog, its socialization and prey drive, and the other animal’s behavior. A Whippet may chase small animals. Introduce pets carefully and supervise them; peaceful coexistence with one household cat does not establish that a Whippet is safe with unfamiliar animals outdoors.
Some Whippets enjoy playing with compatible dogs, but monitor play for mismatched size, speed, intensity, and communication. Do not force interactions with unfamiliar dogs.

Exercise: provide speed safely
Whippets need regular exercise and safe opportunities to run. The Kennel Club lists up to one hour per day on its breed profile, while the American Kennel Club describes regular walks, vigorous retrieving sessions, or play with another dog in a safely fenced area as possible outlets. Treat exercise as an individual plan, not a universal quota. Useful activities include:

- Vigorous retrieving or structured play

- Training games that build focus and cooperation
Increase activity gradually. Ask a veterinarian about unexplained exercise intolerance, lameness, breathing difficulty, or a sudden change in stamina.
Why containment matters
A Whippet can accelerate quickly, and a moving animal or other distraction may overcome recall. Outside a secure enclosure, use a lead and handle gates deliberately. The American Kennel Club advises keeping Whippets on lead when they are not in a fenced area. Recall training is valuable, but it is not a replacement for physical containment.
Inspect more than the nominal height of a fence. Check for:
- Gaps under or between panels
- Fence sections that can be climbed or used as a launch point
- Gates that do not close or latch securely
- Objects near the boundary that help a dog jump
- People entering or leaving through gates
Training and puppy management
Start training early with short, rewarding sessions. Useful foundation skills include name recognition, coming when called, walking on a loose lead, waiting at doors, settling on a mat, exchanging objects, accepting grooming, and leaving tempting items alone.

A well-run puppy class can provide practice around people and dogs, while individual exposure at home helps the puppy learn that handling and household activity are normal. When a puppy cannot be supervised, safe confinement can prevent chewing dangerous items and reduce opportunities to rehearse unwanted behavior. A correctly sized, humane Whippet puppy crate can be part of that management plan, provided the puppy receives exercise, interaction, and regular opportunities to eliminate.
Indoor housing, bedding, and everyday safety
Whippets are short-coated and people-oriented; indoor living is a sensible default. Provide a comfortable resting place away from drafts and a predictable area where the dog can sleep undisturbed. The American Whippet Club recommends soft bedding, making a soft dog bed for a Whippet a practical setup item.

Use a secure lead outside enclosed areas, keep identification and veterinary records current, and control doors and gates. Do not allow a Whippet to dash through an open front door or ride loose in a vehicle. A fenced yard is useful only when its gates and boundaries are secure.
Cold-weather care: when does a Whippet need a coat?
Whippets are lean and short-coated, so cold or wet weather may call for extra protection. A correctly fitted sweater or coat may be appropriate, especially for a young, elderly, unwell, or unacclimated dog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Whippet winter coat should allow unrestricted movement and toileting without rubbing, slipping, or snagging. Breed-specific or sighthound-compatible designs may fit better than generic coats, but the individual dog’s measurements matter more than the label. Keep the dog dry, shorten outdoor sessions in severe conditions, supervise while apparel is worn, and remove wet clothing promptly. Ask a veterinarian about cold-weather care for dogs with health concerns.
Feeding and healthy Whippet body condition
A healthy Whippet often looks lean. Do not assume that visible structure alone indicates poor health, but a sudden change in weight, muscle, appetite, or energy warrants veterinary attention.
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage. Portion food deliberately, count treats and chews as calories, and provide clean water. Calorie needs vary with age, activity, body condition, and health; ask your veterinarian to assess body and muscle condition and adjust portions as needed.
Grooming and routine maintenance
The Whippet’s short, smooth coat is comparatively easy to maintain. Weekly brushing with a soft brush or grooming mitt can remove loose hair and let you inspect the skin. A Whippet grooming brush or soft grooming mitt should not scrape or irritate the close coat. Whippets do shed; regular brushing helps manage loose hair.
Occasional bathing is generally sufficient unless the dog gets dirty. Routine maintenance should also include:

Health care and choosing a breeder
The American Whippet Club describes the breed as generally healthy and estimates that most Whippets live 12–15 years given proper nutrition, exercise, and veterinary care. Routine veterinary wellness examinations remain important; preventive care should be individualized for age, lifestyle, region, and health.
Health testing to discuss with a breeder
The American Kennel Club breed page lists cardiac examination, ophthalmologist evaluation, and BAER hearing testing as health evaluations recommended by the national breed club. Ask the breeder which examinations were completed, when they were performed, and how results can be verified. Discuss the relevance of screening with a veterinarian. Screening does not guarantee that a puppy will never become ill.
Ask about the health and longevity of close relatives, request records rather than verbal assurances, and ask what veterinary documentation accompanies the puppy. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss health honestly.
Because veterinary care can involve expenses, some owners also compare pet insurance coverage before bringing home a Whippet. This is a financial-planning choice, not a guarantee of reimbursement: policies differ by provider, location, deductible, waiting period, limits, and exclusions. Read the actual policy and confirm availability where you live.

Who should—and should not—choose a Whippet?
A Whippet may suit someone who wants an affectionate indoor dog, appreciates a generally calm housemate, can provide regular activity, and is prepared to manage a fast-moving animal around roads and small prey. The breed can live in a small home when its exercise needs are met safely.
Think carefully before choosing one if you want a dog that can routinely roam off lead, live outdoors, or be left unsupervised around cats and small animals. A calm adult Whippet is still a sighthound, and its speed and pursuit instinct matter in daily care.

Do Whippets shed?
Yes. Their short coat is low-maintenance, but weekly brushing can remove loose hair and help you check the skin.
Are Whippets good family dogs?
Many are gentle and affectionate, but suitability depends on the individual dog and household. Supervise children and dogs together, teach children respectful handling, and provide the dog a quiet retreat.
Can a Whippet live in an apartment?
Yes, if its exercise and enrichment needs are met. Use a lead outdoors or provide safe running in a genuinely secure fenced area.
