European mink and common weasels are different species, not two sizes of the same animal. The European mink (Mustela lutreola) is a dark, semi-aquatic mustelid closely tied to vegetated waterways. The common or least weasel discussed here (Mustela nivalis) is much smaller in the UK reference material, has a russet-brown back and pale underside, and uses habitats from woodland to grassland and moorland.
The most useful field combination is body scale, distance from water and facial pattern. A larger, dark animal beside a densely vegetated stream with a distinct white marking running across both lips is consistent with European mink. A tiny brown-backed animal with a creamy underside is consistent with the least weasel profile. Neither clue is absolute: polecats and American mink can look similar, and common names vary by country.

First, what does “common weasel” mean?
Common names are not uniform. In this comparison, “common weasel” means the least weasel, Mustela nivalis, the species covered by the cited IUCN assessment and the UK species profile. In some regions, people use “common weasel” differently, so check the scientific name or the local wildlife authority before treating a sighting as identified.
The European mink is Mustela lutreola. Both animals belong to the mustelid family, but their names do not describe a single animal that changes from weasel into mink as it grows. They are separate species with different body plans, ecological niches, distributions and conservation assessments.

European mink and common weasel at a glance
| Feature | European mink (Mustela lutreola) | Common/least weasel (Mustela nivalis) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall build | Larger, more robust and adapted to a semi-aquatic life. The supplied sources do not provide a directly matched, same-geography numeric comparison with the weasel. | Very small, slim predator. The UK reference gives the measurements below; they are regional figures, not a universal range for every population. |
| Published measurements | No directly comparable figure is established in the cited material. | Body length 17–22 cm, tail 3–5 cm and weight 55–130 g in the UK profile from the IUCN UK Peatland Programme. |
| Coat and markings | Uniformly dark brown, with a characteristic white marking on the muzzle that extends across both lips, according to the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). | Russet-brown back and creamy white throat and belly in the UK profile. |
| Typical setting | Densely vegetated riverbanks, streams, lakes, marshes and other wetland edges; the OFB says it rarely moves more than 150 m from water. | Broader habitat use, including woodland, grassland and moorland in the UK account. |
| European range context | Formerly widespread but now fragmented. Assessment-specific summaries include France, Spain, Romania and Ukraine, with additional areas possibly extant in Russia and a reintroduced population in Estonia. | Broad Holarctic distribution; the IUCN account describes the species as occurring across nearly all Europe, with local absences and introductions. |
| Conservation assessment | Critically Endangered in the European and EU 27 regional assessments; most recently assessed in 2024 in the 2025 Red List record. | Least Concern globally in the IUCN assessment last conducted in 2015 and published in the 2016 record. |
How to tell a European mink from a weasel in the field
Use several observations together rather than relying on one blurred photograph. The following sequence reduces the most common mistakes while keeping you and the animal at a safe distance.
- Start with the setting. Is the animal moving along a stream, marsh or lake edge with thick vegetation? That context is strongly consistent with European mink. An animal in woodland, open grassland or moorland fits the broader habitat pattern described for the least weasel, although either species can turn up outside a textbook setting.
- Estimate scale without approaching. A least weasel is exceptionally small: the UK reference range is 17–22 cm for body length, with a 3–5 cm tail and a mass of 55–130 g. A European mink should look distinctly larger and more robust, but the cited material does not establish a matched numeric mink range, so do not convert this qualitative difference into an unsupported measurement.
- Look at the face. European mink commonly shows a clear white marking across both lips. The symmetry and the fact that it crosses the upper lips are more useful than simply seeing a small pale patch somewhere around the mouth.
- Check the body colour and underside. OFB describes European mink as uniformly dark brown. The UK weasel profile describes a russet-brown back with a creamy white throat and belly. Light, wet fur, shadow and seasonal conditions can alter how these colours appear in a photograph.
- Compare movement and relationship with water. A mink that repeatedly hugs a vegetated bank or disappears into cover beside water fits its semi-aquatic ecology. A weasel may cross many habitat types and is not defined by a close association with water.
- Rule out lookalikes before naming the animal. European mink can be confused with European polecats and American mink. If the observation matters for conservation, record the location, habitat, date, direction of travel and clear photographs, then ask the relevant wildlife authority for confirmation.
Why the white lip mark helps, but does not prove an identification
The OFB specifically notes that American mink generally lacks the European mink’s clear, symmetrical white marking on the upper lip, although lower-lip markings can vary. Juvenile or unusually dark polecats may also show less obvious facial features. A distant animal, a partially hidden face or a single low-resolution image therefore cannot provide a universal confidence level. Treat the lip pattern as a strong clue within a combination of evidence, not as a guaranteed test.

Size is often the quickest separation in person. The least weasel measurements of 17–22 cm body length, 3–5 cm tail and 55–130 g weight come from a UK reference profile, so they should not be presented as the complete worldwide range of Mustela nivalis. They do, however, convey how small the animal is in that regional account.

European mink is described in the cited material as larger, more robust and semi-aquatic, but no directly comparable mink measurement from the same geography is supplied. That matters because body size can vary with sex, age and population. In a practical sighting, describe the mink as distinctly larger than a least weasel rather than attaching an exact length that the available evidence does not establish.
Coat, lips and underside
European mink
The OFB profile describes a uniformly dark-brown coat. Its most useful facial feature is a characteristic white marking on the muzzle extending across both lips. In good light, that mark can appear as a clean pale band against the dark head. Mud, glare, wet fur or a side-on view may hide it.
Common or least weasel
The UK profile gives the weasel a russet-brown back and creamy white throat and belly. The contrast between a darker upper side and pale underside is more useful than trying to judge a precise shade from a photograph. A weasel’s small frame remains an important part of the identification, because colour alone can overlap with other mustelids.

Habitat and behaviour: water is the major ecological divide
European mink is closely tied to wetlands and aquatic margins. The French Office for Biodiversity states in French, “Le Vison d’Europe est inféodé aux milieux humides et aquatiques.” A faithful translation is: “The European mink is closely associated with wetland and aquatic environments.” The same account places it along densely vegetated riverbanks, streams, lakes, marshes and similar water-land edges, and says it rarely travels more than 150 m from water. See the OFB species profile for that habitat description.

The least weasel has a wider habitat footprint in the UK reference, which lists woodland, grassland and moorland. That does not mean every individual avoids water; it means water-edge habitat is not the defining requirement used to describe the species. If a small mustelid is seen far from a wetland, the habitat clue weighs toward weasel, while a dark, larger animal repeatedly using a thickly vegetated bank weighs toward mink.
Where the two species occur
European mink: a fragmented remnant range
European mink once occupied a much larger part of Europe. The current European assessment describes a severe contraction and a small number of isolated wild populations. Its assessment-specific summary identifies extant areas in France, Romania, Spain and Ukraine, with additional areas possibly extant in Russia. The specialist-group overview also lists Estonia, where the Hiiumaa population was reintroduced. The OFB account describes fragments in the Danube Delta, Russia, south-western France, northern Spain and the reintroduced Hiiumaa population.
Those country lists are not interchangeable inventories: they come from sources with different scopes and dates, and a reintroduced population is not the same as a surviving native remnant. Use them as a picture of fragmentation, not as a promise that European mink occur throughout each named country.
The IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group states that “The species now occupies less than 3% of its former range.” The page does not state a publication year, so the figure should be cited as a statement from that specialist group with the year not stated: IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group, European mink overview.

Least weasel: broad distribution with local variation
The IUCN assessment describes Mustela nivalis as broadly distributed across the Holarctic and present in nearly all Europe, while noting local absences and introductions. A broad continental range does not mean that every locality has stable numbers or that a sighting is expected in every habitat. The UK profile’s description of the species as common is regional information and should not replace the global assessment.

| Species | Status and geographic scope | Assessment timing | What the label means here |
|---|---|---|---|
| European mink (Mustela lutreola) | Critically Endangered in the European and EU 27 regional assessments. | Most recently assessed in 2024; the cited Red List record is the 2025 assessment record. IUCN Red List record | The regional classification reflects a highly contracted, fragmented European population. It is not a global label silently transferable to every jurisdiction. |
| Common/least weasel (Mustela nivalis) | Least Concern globally. | Assessment conducted in 2015 and published in the 2016 IUCN record. IUCN Red List record | The global category is based on wide distribution and a presumed large population. Local populations can still face pressures. |
These categories are not directly equivalent snapshots: the mink entry is a European and EU regional assessment from 2024, while the weasel entry is a global assessment from 2015. Always state both the geographic scope and assessment date when comparing them.
Why European mink declined
The documented decline has several interacting causes rather than one simple explanation.
Recommended Free Tools
- Habitat loss and degradation: destruction or deterioration of wetlands, stream margins and dense waterside cover removes the places the species depends on.
- Competition from introduced American mink: the European assessment and specialist group identify competition with introduced American mink as a current pressure.
- Historical fur trapping: trapping contributed to the historical reduction, even though present-day pressures also include habitat and invasive-species effects.
- Small, isolated populations: fragmentation leaves remaining groups separated and makes recovery more difficult. Recent data are limited and uneven, so the IUCN assessment says the decline rate cannot be quantified confidently across the entire range.
It would therefore be misleading to say that American mink alone caused the decline, or that habitat loss alone explains every regional pattern. The evidence supports a combination of pressures operating over time.

What to do with a possible sighting
This is an identification and conservation question, not a reason to capture a wild animal. Watch from a distance and avoid blocking its route to water or cover.
- Note the exact location or nearest landmark, date and time.
- Describe the setting: stream, river, lake, marsh, drainage channel, woodland edge, grassland or moorland; include the amount of dense vegetation at the waterline.
- Estimate relative size using a fixed object in the scene, but do not approach to create a scale reference.
- Photograph the whole animal and, if possible, the head and lips without using a flash at close range.
- Record whether it stayed beside water, entered vegetation, crossed open ground or showed a pale underside.
- Send the observations to the relevant local wildlife authority or conservation recording scheme, explaining that the identification is provisional and mentioning possible polecat or American mink confusion.
Clear location data are particularly valuable for a species whose remaining European populations are isolated. A cautious, well-documented report is more useful than a confident label based on a fleeting glimpse.
Are either species suitable as pets?
Neither animal should be treated as an ordinary companion pet. The European mink is a wild, Critically Endangered species in the cited European and EU assessments, while the least weasel is a wild predator rather than a domesticated form. The comparison is useful for recognizing wildlife, not for choosing an animal to keep at home. If one appears near a garden, farm or walking route, the safest response is observation from a distance and, when identification or welfare is uncertain, advice from a local wildlife authority.
