Researchers recorded more detections of some sensitive and at-risk species farther from roads and near roads with traffic restrictions. Those patterns suggest a possible conservation benefit; they do not show that closures caused population growth or recovery.
How the Gatineau Park study tested road traffic
Millicent V. Gaston and colleagues studied forest birds at Gatineau Park during the 2023 and 2024 breeding seasons. Their study, published online on 17 March 2026 in Ornithological Applications, used 30 autonomous recording units to compare sites at different distances from roads.
The roads represented three traffic conditions: roads with no traffic restrictions, a road permanently closed to personal vehicles, and roads temporarily closed to personal vehicles four days a week. Public transportation remained available on the temporarily restricted roads. The researchers assessed species richness, Shannon diversity, community composition, detections of traffic-sensitive indicator species, and occurrences of species at risk. Read the study by Gaston and colleagues.
What changed—and what did not
No strong community-wide diversity effect
The study found no strong effect of road distance or traffic restrictions on community-level diversity. In other words, the overall diversity measures did not show a clear response to the road conditions studied.

Some sensitive birds were detected more often
Some sensitive birds had more detections farther from roads and near permanently or temporarily closed roads. Examples in the American Ornithological Society’s summary include Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens), Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea), Brown Creeper (Certhia americana), Eastern Wood-pewee (Contopus virens), and Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina). The researchers used detections as a proxy for relative abundance. A higher detection count is not a direct population estimate, and the pattern does not establish that restricting traffic caused birds to increase.
The authors caution that the results come from one peri-urban park; effects may differ with local habitat and bird communities. The American Ornithological Society’s summary also describes the findings and their implications.

How park managers might use temporary restrictions
Temporary closures are a potential, adaptable tool where vehicle traffic and wildlife habitat overlap—not a universal prescription. The authors suggest considering restrictions where and when birds are vulnerable, including species-at-risk habitat during breeding and at dawn. More public transportation could reduce personal vehicle use while preserving some access.
Any intervention should be evaluated locally. A useful monitoring plan would compare bird detections before and after restrictions, track the same locations and seasons, and distinguish community-level measures from results for particular sensitive species. The Gatineau Park findings support monitoring such interventions; they do not establish which closure schedule or road design will work best elsewhere.

The unique non-slip ergonomic handles on both sides are made of eco-friendly rubber with a textured surface, ensuring a secure and comfortable hold that prevents slipping.
Access and local impacts are part of the decision
Restricting vehicles can make some natural areas harder to reach, create barriers for some visitors, and affect tourism or nearby businesses. The study did not measure the size of these effects. Park managers considering restrictions therefore need to weigh ecological objectives alongside visitor accessibility and local economic concerns, and assess those outcomes in the specific place where a closure is proposed.
