An orange tabby is a cat with orange coloring and visible tabby markings: “orange” describes coat color, while “tabby” describes a pattern. Most orange cats are male because the orange-color gene is carried on the X chromosome, but female orange cats exist. Coat color is not a reliable way to predict a cat’s personality, and orange tabbies do not have a known special care regimen.
What makes an orange tabby orange?
Orange and tabby refer to two different features. Orange is a coat-color trait; tabby is a pattern. Orange cats and orange patches typically show darker orange stripes or other tabby markings. The University of California, Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory explains that sex-linked orange cats display tabby patterning even when their genetic background would otherwise make the pattern difficult to see (UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory).
A 2025 study identified a 5-kilobase deletion associated with the orange trait and ectopic, melanocyte-specific expression of the gene ARHGAP36. In accessible terms, a regulatory change affects pigment production in the cells that make hair. The study also describes changes in pathways involved in pigment regulation; it does not establish that coat color causes a particular behavior (Kaelin et al., Current Biology, June 23, 2025).
Why are most orange cats male?
The orange mutation is on the X chromosome. A male cat usually has one X chromosome, so one orange copy on that chromosome can produce an orange coat. A female usually has two X chromosomes and generally needs an orange copy on both to be fully orange. This inheritance pattern makes orange males more common, but it does not mean every orange cat is male.

Can female cats be orange?
Yes. A female with two orange copies can be fully orange. If she has one orange copy and one non-orange copy, random X-inactivation early in development can leave different cell groups expressing different color versions. The result may be orange-and-black patches, as in a tortoiseshell; when a separate white-spotting mutation adds white areas, the cat may have a calico pattern. These patterns do not make female orange cats impossible—they reflect how the color genes are expressed across cells. The 2025 study and Kyushu University’s account explain the sex-linked inheritance (study; Kyushu University).
Are orange cats friendlier or do they have a special personality?
There is no sound basis for predicting an individual cat’s temperament from orange fur. People may describe orange cats as friendly, chaotic, or as having “one orange brain cell,” but those are perceptions and jokes, not dependable assessments of a cat’s character.

The American Animal Hospital Association’s May 2026 article reports a survey of 189 people who consistently labeled orange cats “friendly.” That finding measures what respondents thought, not whether orange cats are actually friendlier. The article also notes that survey methods and questions vary, and that socialization and environment matter to personality (AAHA, May 1, 2026). Meet the individual cat and consider its behavior and needs rather than choosing—or ruling one out—based on a color stereotype.

No color-specific care regimen is established by the veterinary guidance cited here. Orange tabbies need the same thoughtful preparation and routine care as other cats. Cornell’s Feline Health Center recommends having food and a litter box ready before a cat arrives, and ideally a scratching post (Cornell Feline Health Center).

Set up a litter box your cat can use
- Make sure the cat can access a litter box. Many cats prefer a simple box without a hood, but individual preferences differ.
- Kittens and cats with arthritis may find a box with low sides easier to enter.
- Many cats prefer unscented, fine-textured litter; treat this as a common preference, not a guarantee.
Observe what your cat uses comfortably and keep the box accessible and clean. A cat’s needs and preferences are more useful guides than its coat color.
Choose a cat by health and behavior, not color
When considering a kitten, Cornell describes a physically sound one as active, bright, responsive, and ready to play. Consider the animal’s body condition and behavior, and ask about any health concerns. Cornell advises that a cat with health problems should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
