It combines the rounded head and sturdy body associated with Persian cats with a coat that is easier to manage than long flowing hair, although it still needs regular combing. Breed profiles describe Exotics as gentle, affectionate, quiet, curious and playful; those are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every individual.
The most important ownership questions are practical: can you maintain a dense coat, clean tear overflow when needed, and choose a cat whose breathing, eyes, facial structure and kidney-health documentation have been responsibly assessed? This guide explains the breed’s history, appearance, behavior, routine care and the questions to ask a breeder or adoption contact.

What is an Exotic Shorthair cat?
The Exotic Shorthair was developed as a short-coated version of the Persian type. In the 1950s, Persian breeders crossed Persians with American Shorthairs, producing cats with Persian-like rounded heads and bodies but shorter hair, according to the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA). The breed was subsequently developed toward the Persian type with a short, dense coat, as described by The International Cat Association (TICA).
TICA places the Exotic Shorthair in its Persian Breed Group with Persians and Himalayans. Its 2025 breed standard describes a coat that is short, plush and stands away from the body. “Shorthaired” therefore does not mean sleek, sparse or maintenance-free. The coat has substantial density and can shed heavily at seasonal changes.

Breed standards describe an ideal type for conformation, not a health guarantee. A healthy pet does not need to match every show detail, and appearance alone cannot tell you whether a cat is comfortable. Facial structure, breathing, eye comfort, dental alignment, body condition and behavior deserve individual assessment.
How does an Exotic Shorthair look?
An Exotic is typically compact, rounded and sturdy. Common features include a broad round head, large round eyes, small ears, a short nose and a dense plush coat. Coat colors and patterns are varied, so two healthy Exotics can look quite different in color while sharing the same general type.
The short muzzle and broad head are part of the breed’s Persian-derived appearance. They are also why a prospective owner should look beyond photographs. A very short or crowded facial structure can affect tear drainage, eye protection, breathing and dental alignment. Ask to see the cat awake and moving normally rather than judging only a posed image.
Exotic Shorthair and Persian: the practical difference
| Feature | Exotic Shorthair | Persian |
|---|---|---|
| Coat | Short, dense, plush and standing away from the body | Long, flowing hair with substantial grooming demands |
| Shared type | Rounded Persian-type head and sturdy body | Rounded head and sturdy body |
| Routine grooming | Usually less time-consuming than a Persian, but regular combing remains necessary | Daily or very frequent grooming is commonly needed to prevent tangles and mats |
| Shedding | Can increase during seasonal shedding periods | Long hair makes loose coat more visible and matting more consequential |
| Health assessment | Evaluate each cat’s breathing, eyes, teeth and overall comfort | The same individual assessment is needed; breed appearance is not a diagnosis |
The comparison is about coat length and workload, not a promise that one breed is medically safer. An Exotic is not a “no-grooming” alternative to a Persian.
What is an Exotic Shorthair’s temperament?
TICA describes the breed as easy-going, affectionate, gentle, quiet, curious and playful. VCA characterizes Exotics as mellow and calm. TICA also notes that the shorthaired ancestry is associated with more playfulness than is often seen in Persians and describes Exotics as able to get along with children and other pets.

These descriptions are tendencies. The individual cat’s early socialization, previous handling, age, health and home environment matter more than a label when you are choosing a companion. Meet the cat in a calm setting and observe whether it approaches voluntarily, recovers after a mild startle, accepts ordinary handling and shows relaxed body language.
Households that may suit the breed
- Quiet or moderately active homes: Many Exotics enjoy company without demanding constant activity.
- Families: A cat that has been positively socialized may cope well with respectful children; supervise all interactions and provide a retreat.
- Homes with other pets: Introductions should be gradual, with separate food, litter and resting areas at first.
- People who want an interactive companion: Curiosity and playfulness still call for daily play, climbing opportunities and puzzle-style activities.
Ask the current caregiver how the cat behaves around visitors, grooming, carriers, children, dogs and other cats. A quiet cat may be content, fearful or unwell; context and a veterinary assessment help distinguish those possibilities.
How much grooming does an Exotic Shorthair need?
The coat needs less maintenance than a Persian’s long coat but is still dense enough to trap loose hair. CFA says weekly combing is generally sufficient for much of the year and recommends a steel or Teflon-coated comb. VCA also suggests weekly brushing. GCCF notes that regular grooming remains necessary and that shedding seasons may require more careful combing.
A workable grooming routine
- Check the coat weekly. Work through the body with a suitable metal comb, looking for packed undercoat, small knots and areas of increased shedding.
- Increase checks during seasonal shedding. If the comb is filling quickly or the coat feels dense and clumpy, groom more often rather than waiting for mats.
- Use gentle, short sessions. Reward cooperation and stop before the cat becomes distressed. Ask the breeder or veterinarian to demonstrate safe handling if the cat resists.
- Inspect high-friction areas. Check behind the ears, under the front legs, around the collar area and at the hindquarters.
- Keep nails, ears and skin on a routine schedule. Have a veterinary professional show you what normal looks like for your cat; do not insert objects into the ear canal.
Never cut out a tight mat close to the skin with household scissors. A groomer or veterinary team can remove severe matting safely and check for irritated skin underneath.
Eye and tear care
Large eyes and a short muzzle can be associated with tear overflow and staining. VCA notes tear overflow, and GCCF recommends regular eye cleaning. If the fur beneath the eyes needs attention, wipe the external area gently with a clean, damp cloth and use a fresh section for each eye. Do not put unprescribed drops, creams or cleaning products into the eye.

No source reviewed establishes a reliable Exotic Shorthair-specific disease prevalence rate or a fixed lifespan estimate. Health risk statements below identify sensible questions, not predictions about an individual cat.
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)
VCA lists Exotic Shorthairs among Persian-derived breeds commonly affected by polycystic kidney disease. GCCF says breeding cats should be tested and that prospective owners should obtain clear parent test certificates. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory lists PKD1 testing information for the breed.
Ask to see the actual certificates for both parents, including the cat’s registered identity, test method, result and laboratory. A general wellness examination is not the same as a genetic test. A negative result lowers concern about the tested mutation in that breeding line, but your own veterinarian remains the right person to interpret the record and plan ongoing care. Do not transfer prevalence figures quoted for Persian cats to Exotics; they are not the same statistic.
Brachycephalic and eye considerations
GCCF describes the Exotic as brachycephalic and advises against taking the trait to extremes for health and comfort. A short face may contribute to tear overflow and can complicate breathing, eye protection or dental alignment in some individuals.

The European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists’ breed manual lists conditions reported for Exotic Shorthairs, including lacrimal punctum atresia, corneal sequestra, entropion and congenital cataract. The manual notes that some listed conditions have no gene or marker test. This does not mean every Exotic develops them, nor does it provide a breed-wide incidence figure.
During a visit, watch the cat breathe at rest and during ordinary movement. Concerning signs include persistent open-mouth breathing, pronounced effort, noisy breathing when awake, reluctance to move, repeated eye rubbing or inability to close the eyelids comfortably. Have a veterinarian examine any concern before purchase or adoption.
Dental and general examination
Ask the veterinarian to assess dental alignment, gums, body condition, skin and mobility. Crowded teeth can be difficult for owners to see in a young cat. A pre-purchase examination is especially useful when facial structure is very flat, the cat has chronic eye discharge, or the health records are incomplete.

Responsible selection is more than receiving a pedigree. Use the following checklist and request records you can read yourself.

- Can you provide clear PKD test certificates for both parents?
- What other health screening was performed, who performed it, and which laboratory or veterinarian issued the result?
- Can I see the kitten or adult cat breathing, walking and interacting when it is awake and relaxed?
- Has a veterinarian checked the eyes, teeth, heart, lungs, skin and overall condition?
- How does the cat respond to combing, eye cleaning, nail handling, a carrier and routine restraint?
- What eye and coat care does the current caregiver provide, and how often?
- What signs would make you delay a sale or recommend veterinary treatment?
- What is the return or support policy if a serious health problem appears after placement?
Cornell Feline Health Center selection guidance supports observing comfort and behavior rather than choosing by appearance alone. If a seller will not let you review records, see the cat move normally or ask questions about care, treat that as a reason to pause.

Adopting an Exotic Shorthair: what to check
Rescue and shelter records may be incomplete, especially for an adult whose previous home is unknown. That is not a reason to reject a cat automatically; it is a reason to arrange a thorough veterinary examination and budget for follow-up.
- Ask for every available vaccination, parasite, surgery and illness record.
- Observe breathing and movement in a quiet room, then after a short period of normal activity.
- Look for clean, comfortable eyes, a coat free of severe mats and skin without obvious sores.
- Ask staff about appetite, litter-box habits, play, handling tolerance and reactions to other animals.
- Book a veterinarian visit soon after adoption and bring all records and questions.
A cat can appear bright while still needing dental, eye or kidney evaluation. The adoption examination establishes a baseline; it does not replace observation at home.
Daily care and enrichment
Provide fresh water, a nutritionally complete diet selected with veterinary guidance, clean litter boxes and several resting places. Because Exotics are often described as calm, owners may underestimate their need for play. Short interactive sessions, safe climbing surfaces and food puzzles help maintain activity without turning the home into an obstacle course.

Keep the carrier accessible and make handling routine through brief, reward-based sessions. This makes future grooming and veterinary visits less stressful. Never force a frightened cat through prolonged handling; pause and seek behavior guidance if routine care becomes a struggle.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming short hair means no brushing: Dense plush coats still shed and can mat.
- Choosing the flattest face: Extreme appearance can make breathing and eye comfort harder to assess.
- Treating tear staining as purely cosmetic: Redness, odor, squinting or persistent discharge needs veterinary attention.
- Accepting a verbal PKD claim: Ask for identifiable parent certificates and discuss them with your veterinarian.
- Using human or unprescribed eye products: Some substances can injure the eye or mask worsening disease.
- Assuming breed temperament guarantees compatibility: Evaluate the individual cat’s socialization and behavior.
- Using Persian disease statistics as Exotic statistics: Related ancestry does not make prevalence figures interchangeable.
Is an Exotic Shorthair right for you?
An Exotic may suit you if you want a generally gentle, people-oriented companion with Persian-type features but a shorter coat, and if you are prepared for weekly combing, seasonal shedding and regular eye observation. The breed is a poor fit if you want a completely maintenance-free cat or are unwilling to investigate facial comfort and inherited-disease documentation.
Make the decision from the individual cat in front of you: its breathing, eyes, teeth, movement, grooming tolerance, social behavior and records. A responsible breeder or adoption organization should welcome those questions rather than relying on appearance or breed reputation alone.
