The rash reports peaked in 2024, especially in northern Illinois and the Chicago area, after two periodical cicada broods emerged together. The culprit was Pyemotes herfsi, a nearly invisible itch mite—not a parasite that lives on people, dogs, or cats.
For pet owners, the practical concern is outdoor exposure: gardening, handling branches, clearing leaves, or walking through areas with heavy cicada activity may bring mites into contact with skin. The mites are not known to transmit disease, but their bites can produce an intensely itchy rash many hours later.
What caused the Illinois mite outbreak?
In 2024, Illinois experienced the rare simultaneous emergence of periodical cicada Brood XIII, a 17-year brood, and Brood XIX, a 13-year brood. The two broods last emerged in the same year in 1803 and are not expected to do so again until 2245.
That created an unusually large food supply for Pyemotes herfsi. Despite the shorthand “cicada-eating mite,” these mites do not feed on adult cicadas. They feed primarily on developing cicada eggs deposited beneath tree bark. They also prey on other insects, including oak-gall midge larvae.

Once those prey items become scarce, mites can disperse from trees and vegetation. People who happen to encounter them may then develop bites. This was an ecological population boom associated with abundant cicada eggs—not an infestation spreading from person to person or living in people’s homes.
Illinois has seen a similar pattern before. An itch-mite outbreak around the Chicago area in 2007 also followed a prolific periodical cicada emergence, and an Illinois Natural History Survey report identified P. herfsi as the cause.
Is the whole state of Illinois affected?
No. The 2024 reports were concentrated chiefly in northern Illinois and the Chicago region. Cicada activity also varied substantially by location, so the headline’s reference to the entire state is an oversimplification.
It is also important not to treat a 2024 report as evidence of an ongoing statewide outbreak in 2026. These mite increases are tied to local environmental conditions and unusually large insect populations. A pet owner seeing an itchy rash now should not automatically assume it is an itch-mite bite.

What do itch-mite bites look like?
The mites are about 0.2 millimeters long and generally cannot be seen without magnification. Their bites are usually not felt at the moment they occur. A rash commonly develops 10 to 16 hours after exposure, making it difficult to identify the exact place or activity that caused it.
Typical signs include:
- Intensely itchy, red, pimple-like welts
- Multiple irritated spots that can last for up to two weeks
- A distribution that may not match the pattern of common chigger bites
The rash can resemble mosquito, chigger, bedbug, or other insect bites. Itch-mite lesions are not typically concentrated on the legs in the way chigger bites often are.
For dogs and cats: the available Illinois public-health guidance describes human exposure and does not establish that these mites infest household pets. Do not diagnose a pet’s rash from a photograph or assume every post-outdoor itch is caused by P. herfsi. Contact a veterinarian if your dog or cat develops persistent scratching, hair loss, inflamed skin, sores, or widespread bumps.
Can these mites live on people, pets, or inside the house?
No. Pyemotes herfsi cannot live on humans, does not establish a human infestation, and does not survive indoors. It is also not the same organism as the scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, which infests human skin.

That distinction matters for pet households. Finding a rash after being outdoors does not mean that the house, bedding, dog, or cat needs to be treated for mites. Avoid applying insecticides, flea products, essential oils, or household pesticides to an animal unless a veterinarian specifically recommends the product for that animal and situation.
How should people and pet owners reduce exposure?
There is no reliable way to spot these mites outdoors, so protection focuses on reducing skin contact with likely sources.
- Cover up for yard work. Wear tightly woven clothing, long sleeves, and gloves when gardening or handling leaves, branches, bark, or yard waste.
- Keep outdoor materials away from the house. Do not carry suspect branches, leaf piles, or yard waste indoors. Brush off footwear and clothing outside.
- Wash after exposure. Shower after gardening or extensive outdoor activity, and wash the clothing worn during that activity.
- Protect indoor spaces during heavy activity. Keep windows closed in areas where mite activity is being reported, particularly if trees or branches are close to open windows.
- Use caution with pets. Keep dogs from rubbing repeatedly against affected trees or piles of yard debris, and wipe mud or plant material from coats before pets come inside. This is a sensible way to reduce outdoor debris exposure, not a treatment for a confirmed mite infestation.
DEET may offer some protection, but it is not reliably effective against P. herfsi. Earlier reports found that it did not provide complete protection, so repellent should not replace clothing and exposure controls.
Should you spray the trees?
Usually, no. Spraying trees is generally not recommended because mites inside leaf galls are protected from insecticides. Broad pesticide use can also expose people, pets, pollinators, and other beneficial organisms without solving the source of the problem.

Do not spray a dog or cat with a yard pesticide, household insecticide, or human insect repellent. Products safe for plants or people are not automatically safe for animals. If a veterinarian thinks a pet has an ectoparasite problem, use only the product and dose appropriate for that species and weight.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What relieves the itching?
For a person with mild symptoms, Illinois public-health guidance and clinical reporting have listed the following measures:
| Measure | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Cool compress or ice pack wrapped in cloth | May reduce itching and inflammation |
| Calamine lotion | Provides topical itch relief |
| Over-the-counter hydrocortisone | May reduce inflammation when used as directed |
| Oral antihistamine | May help with itching; follow the label and ask a pharmacist if unsure |
More severe reactions may require a prescription topical steroid. Scratching can break the skin and introduce bacteria, causing a secondary infection. Seek medical advice if redness is spreading, the area becomes increasingly painful or warm, pus develops, or symptoms are severe or persistent.
For a pet, do not use human hydrocortisone, antihistamines, calamine lotion, or other home treatments without checking with a veterinarian first. Some human medications and topical ingredients can be unsafe for animals, especially if a pet licks them.

When should a pet see a veterinarian?
Arrange veterinary advice if your pet has intense or continuous itching, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, open sores, or signs of skin infection. Emergency breathing problems or rapidly developing facial swelling require urgent veterinary care.
A veterinarian can distinguish possible mite exposure from fleas, sarcoptic mange, allergies, bacterial or fungal skin disease, and other causes that may look similar. The 2024 Illinois reports alone are not enough to identify the cause of a current pet skin problem.
FAQ
Are cicada-eating mites dangerous to dogs and cats?
Pyemotes herfsi is not known to transmit disease and does not establish an infestation on humans. The available Illinois guidance focuses on human bites and does not show that household dogs or cats become hosts. Ask a veterinarian to evaluate any persistent or severe pet rash instead of assuming it is an itch-mite bite.
Can cicada mites live in my house or on my pet?
No. These mites cannot live on humans, do not survive indoors, and are not the same as scabies mites. A rash after yard work does not mean that your home or pet needs pesticide treatment.

How long does an itch-mite rash last?
The rash may appear 10–16 hours after exposure and can persist for up to two weeks. It can look like mosquito, chigger, or bedbug bites. Seek medical care if the skin becomes infected or the symptoms are severe.
Will DEET or tree spraying prevent itch-mite bites?
DEET may help but is not reliably protective against P. herfsi. Spraying trees is generally not recommended because mites inside leaf galls can be protected from insecticides. Protective clothing, gloves, showering, and washing exposed clothing are more useful precautions.
The Bottom Line
The Illinois itch-mite event followed the exceptional 2024 overlap of cicada Broods XIII and XIX, mainly in northern Illinois and the Chicago area. Pyemotes herfsi feeds on cicada eggs and other insects, then may bite people when prey becomes scarce. It does not live on people or pets, does not survive indoors, and is not the same as scabies. Protect skin during yard work, avoid indiscriminate pesticide use, and have a veterinarian examine any pet with ongoing or serious skin symptoms.
