Rydell’s path to a settled home took time: at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, caregivers worked with him on basic cues and the things that set him off, then helped him get comfortable around other dogs. After Daphne Drake and Dallas Mendenhall adopted him, they continued building on those skills with support from a veterinary behaviorist. Best Friends Animal Society’s June 23, 2025, feature follows the German shepherd mix from a high-energy arrival to a life of car rides, river walks, fetch—and plenty of water.
Rydell arrived with energy and little experience
Best Friends Animal Society’s feature describes Rydell as a two-year-old German shepherd mix when he arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. He barked at dogs, lunged at cars, and pulled hard on leash. Caregiver Emma Odekirk saw a lively dog who deserved support: “He had such a young, vibrant spirit and a love for life that made me want to do everything I could to set him up for success,” she says. Read the Best Friends feature.
Caregivers built his skills gradually
First, basic cues and work around triggers
Rydell’s training began with basic cues and work on his reactions to cars, golf carts, and other animals. The feature describes this as a process, not an instant change.
Walks near dogs and supervised playgroups
As he made progress, caregivers introduced walks near other dogs, which helped him become more comfortable co-existing peacefully around them. Muzzle training enabled him to join playgroups safely. He was unsure how to interact at first, but began playing with the other dogs over time. His story illustrates one dog’s experience; it does not establish that muzzle training or playgroups are right for every dog.

Settling in took continued support
At home, Rydell initially barked at neighborhood dogs and was wary of vet visits. Drake, a therapist who works from home, sought help to build on the skills he had learned at the Sanctuary. The family worked with a veterinary behaviorist; Drake credits structure and patience with helping him settle: “He just needed structure and patience,” she says. The feature does not name the behaviorist or specify a particular training method.
His new routine includes rivers, fetch, and bubbles
Rydell’s later routine, as described in the feature, includes car rides, river walks, and fetch. Drake says he is obsessed with tennis balls, water, and bubbles—especially bubbles from a SodaStream. She sums up the family’s affection simply: “He is a total sweetheart, and we absolutely love him.”

What Best Friends means by “no-kill”
The feature places Rydell’s story within Best Friends’ stated goal for every U.S. shelter and community to reach no-kill in 2025. Best Friends defines no-kill as “saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets.” That is the organization’s definition and goal as presented in the feature; the story does not establish the current status of the 2025 goal or independently assess shelter outcomes.
