Biocontrol can suppress parasites in some settings, but current evidence does not establish it as a reliable replacement for chemical parasite prevention or treatment in pets. For dogs and cats, don’t stop or substitute a prescribed parasite-control product based on general claims about biological control; ask your veterinarian whether an approach has evidence for the specific parasite, animal, and location.
What biocontrol means—and what it does not
Biological control, or biocontrol, uses living organisms or their effects to suppress a target pest or parasite. Depending on the system, this may involve predation, parasitism, disease-causing organisms, competition, or changing conditions the target needs to survive. It is not one treatment or product, and the word alone does not say which organism is controlled, how reliably, or whether the method is safe and suitable for a particular pet.
Biocontrol may be classical, by introducing a natural enemy; augmentative, by adding or releasing agents; or conservation-based, by supporting natural enemies already present. These methods are often discussed as part of integrated pest management (IPM), which combines suitable approaches rather than relying on one tool in every circumstance.
It is important to keep evidence populations separate. Crop pests, livestock parasites, and parasites of dogs and cats are not interchangeable. Results against insects that damage crops do not show that the same approach controls worms, fleas, ticks, or other parasites in pets.

What the evidence says for pets
There is no universal pet-parasite result
Kumar and colleagues’ review, “Biological approaches for parasite control as an alternative to chemical methods in animals,” appeared in Journal of Parasitic Diseases 50(1) in March 2026 and was electronically published June 23, 2025. It describes ways biological agents may disrupt parasite life cycles or reduce parasite populations, and discusses integrating biocontrol with other management. It does not provide one current efficacy figure that can be applied across livestock parasites, much less a general effectiveness estimate for household dogs and cats.
The practical question is therefore not simply whether biocontrol works. It is whether a particular agent has demonstrated effectiveness against the named parasite in the relevant host and conditions, and whether it is authorized and suitable where you live. The available evidence summarized here is not enough to recommend a general biological substitute for a pet’s parasite-control plan.

Livestock findings are relevant context, not pet guidance
Some livestock approaches target free-living stages of parasites in pasture rather than treating only parasites on or inside the animal. Reviews discuss nematode-eating fungi, grazing management, selected tanniferous crops, and limited, selective use of antiparasitic drugs as possible elements of integrated control. A 1999 review noted that practical farm efficacy needed further study; a 1990 review found only a small number of biological antagonists with promising qualities in veterinary science. These sources help explain the biological rationale and operational challenges, but they do not establish a current, broadly effective treatment for pets.
Crop-pest results cannot be transferred to pets
A 2022 meta-analysis of 99 studies across 31 crops in sub-Saharan Africa reported substantial benefits from biocontrol in that specific crop-pest setting:

- The authors reported 63% lower pest abundance, over 50% lower crop damage, and over 60% higher yield compared with no biocontrol.
- Compared with synthetic pesticides, they reported comparable pest abundance and yield, and 43% greater natural-enemy abundance.
Those figures are the meta-analysis authors’ results for crop pests and crops in sub-Saharan Africa. They are not estimates for animal parasites, dogs, cats, or household use.
Biocontrol and chemical control are not an either-or choice
In IPM, a biological method can complement other measures rather than replace every chemical treatment. The relevant comparison depends on the target and setting. For a pet owner, a useful discussion with a veterinarian should consider:

- The PetArmor Extend tick and flea collar for dogs (above 18 lbs.) delivers up to 8 months of protection from fleas & ticks, without a prescription; starts working 24 hours after the initial application & formulated for dogs & puppies 7 weeks or older
- Odorless, Non-Greasy & Water-Resistant: Unlike other flea & tick collars, the Extend Collar won’t leave a chemical smell or greasy residue on your dog; a long-lasting, water-resistant dog flea & tick control formula works, even if your dog gets wet
- Vet-Recommended Ingredients: This flea and tick collar for dogs is made with the same active ingredients as Seresto, but without the high price tag; It’s formulated for dogs and puppies seven weeks or older and requires no vet visit or prescription
- 8 Months of Continuous Protection: The PetArmor Extend dog flea treatment collar for large dogs (above 18 lbs.) kills and repels fleas and ticks for up to eight months; Starts working 24 hours after the initial application
- Breaks the Flea Life Cycle: Kills and repels fleas, ticks, and lice through contact, so they don’t have to bite your dog to die; The active ingredients in this dog flea and tick collar also target flea larvae, effectively breaking the flea life cycle
- Target-specific effectiveness: Is the method shown to affect the parasite species or life stage at issue?
- Reliability in real conditions: Does it work consistently in the animal’s environment and under local conditions, or only in limited studies?
- Safety and non-target effects: What could happen to the pet, other animals, people, or beneficial organisms?
- Resistance and residues: What are the relevant concerns for the proposed method and for any chemical treatment being considered?
- Practical demands: Does it require release, special conditions, repeated application, monitoring, or a longer time to effect?
- Fit with the whole plan: Can it be combined with appropriate hygiene, environmental management, or selective treatment without leaving the pet unprotected?
These questions matter because biocontrol is target-specific and its effect can depend on the wider system. Chemical products also differ in target, coverage, duration, and suitability; “chemical” is not a single method, and “natural” does not by itself establish safety or effectiveness.
How to assess a biocontrol claim for your pet
- Name the parasite and the pet. Ask whether the claim is about a parasite affecting dogs or cats, rather than crop pests or livestock, and whether it applies to the relevant species and life stage.
- Ask what evidence supports it. Look for results in the intended host and real-world conditions, not just a plausible mechanism or studies in another species or environment.
- Check local authorization and suitability. Approval and availability vary by place and intended use. USDA APHIS’s Biological Control Program describes screening, development, release, monitoring, and evaluation for U.S. plant pests and weeds; that program is not veterinary guidance or a worldwide approval statement.
- Agree on monitoring and next steps. Ask how success will be judged, how soon to reassess, and what to do if parasite control is inadequate. Do not discontinue a prescribed preventive or treatment without veterinary advice.
What to conclude
Biocontrol is a viable option in particular, well-defined systems, and it may have a role within integrated parasite management. But the evidence summarized here does not support saying it can generally replace chemical parasite control for pets. Until a method is shown to work for the specific parasite, host, and setting—and is appropriate and authorized for that use—treat broad replacement claims cautiously and make changes to a pet’s plan with a veterinarian.
