A weak, cold, unusually quiet, non-nursing, or deteriorating newborn puppy needs urgent veterinary care. Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic now and arrange to have the puppy assessed. While you do that, keep the puppy dry, provide gentle controlled warmth, and transport it safely. These steps offer interim support; they cannot diagnose or treat the cause.
1. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately
Do not wait to see whether a newborn puppy improves on its own. Weakness, chilling, low blood sugar, dehydration, infection, and feeding problems can overlap, and a puppy that appears to be fading needs professional assessment. VCA advises: “If you are at all worried that you may have a sick puppy, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian.”

Tell the clinic the puppy’s age, what you have observed, whether it is nursing, and when the change began. Follow the clinic’s directions while preparing to travel. Do not delay the call to try repeated home interventions.
2. Keep the puppy dry and gently warm
Newborn puppies cannot regulate their temperature like older dogs. Merck Veterinary Manual states that puppies and kittens lack thermoregulatory mechanisms until four weeks of age, so environmental warmth matters. If the puppy is wet, gently dry it and keep it in a warm, protected place while arranging care.

Warm the puppy gradually rather than applying intense heat. Merck says chilled neonates must be rewarmed slowly over 30–60 minutes to avoid peripheral vasodilation and dehydration. Heating pads can burn newborns that cannot move away from an excessively hot surface; do not leave a puppy on one unattended. If you use a warming source, keep heat indirect and controlled, and supervise the puppy.
3. Transport safely; don’t force-feed
Take the puppy to the clinic in a dry, secure carrier or box with soft bedding. Keep it gently warm during the trip without placing it against a hot surface. Call ahead so the clinic knows a newborn puppy is coming and can advise you on transport.

When puppy milk replacer is relevant
Commercial puppy milk replacer may be appropriate for an orphaned puppy or when a veterinarian directs supplemental feeding. It does not treat the cause of a fading puppy, and it is not equivalent to the mother’s milk. Merck Veterinary Manual notes: “Commercially manufactured milk replacement formulas are superior to homemade versions, but none is equal to the dam’s milk.” Ask the veterinarian whether a replacer is appropriate and how to use it for this puppy.

What not to do while arranging care
- Do not wait for symptoms to pass before contacting a veterinarian.
- Do not apply direct or excessive heat, or leave a newborn unattended on a heating pad.
- Do not force-feed, tube-feed, or give glucose without veterinary direction.
- Do not treat milk replacer or warming as a cure for the underlying problem.
