If a mother cat is nursing and caring for her kittens, her milk is the preferred food. If a kitten is orphaned or cannot nurse, use commercial kitten milk replacer and bottle-feed only when the kitten can suckle safely. Keep the kitten warm, feed it belly-down with a slow-flow nipple, and seek veterinary help promptly for weakness, breathing trouble, or poor weight gain.
Before feeding: decide whether the kitten needs help
1. Check whether the mother is caring for the kitten
If you find kittens outdoors and none is in immediate danger, observe from a distance before intervening. The mother may be nearby, and her milk is the preferred nutrition when she can nurse. ASPCA guidance explains what to do when you find kittens outside: I Found Kittens Outside, What Do I Do?

2. Get help for a kitten that looks ill or injured
Contact a veterinarian, shelter, or rescue promptly if a kitten appears ill or injured. A cold, weak, unresponsive kitten, one that is not suckling, or one with abnormal breathing needs professional assessment—not an improvised feeding attempt.
3. Confirm that replacement feeding is necessary
Hand-rearing may be needed if the mother is absent, has died, is ill, or cannot raise the litter. A kitten too weak to suckle needs veterinary guidance; do not try to force-feed it or attempt tube feeding yourself. A veterinarian can demonstrate and assist with alternative feeding methods when they are appropriate.

Choose formula and work out how much to offer
4. Use commercial kitten milk replacer
Choose a commercial kitten milk replacer and prepare it according to its label. In its guide last updated February 4, 2025, VCA’s veterinary authors state: “Commercial kitten milk replacers are recommended as they are superior to cow’s milk and homemade mixtures.” Do not substitute cow’s milk or a homemade mixture for kitten formula. See VCA’s guide to feeding orphaned kittens.
5. Follow the product directions rather than guessing a feed volume
The amount a kitten needs depends on its weight, age, the formula’s concentration, and its condition. VCA’s guide gives general energy requirements of 15 kcal per 100 g of body weight per day on days 1–3, 20 kcal per 100 g per day on days 4–6, and up to 25 kcal per 100 g per day after day 6. These are energy estimates, not bottle volumes: use the replacer’s feeding directions and ask a veterinarian about the individual kitten.
Maddie’s Fund gives 4 ml per 100 g of body weight as a comfortable stomach-capacity reference, citing Lawler’s 2008 veterinary reference. It is not a prescribed amount for every feeding and should not override the product label or veterinary advice. Its resource is Practical Tips for Orphaned Kitten Care.

Prepare the kitten, formula, and bottle
6. Warm the kitten before feeding
A chilled kitten does not feed or digest well. Hypothermia also raises the risk of aspiration, so a cold kitten should be slowly rewarmed before feeding. Do not feed a chilled or unresponsive kitten without veterinary direction; the veterinary review Playing Mum: Successful management of orphaned kittens discusses these risks.
7. Warm the prepared formula carefully
VCA recommends warming prepared replacer to about 100°F (38°C); Maddie’s Fund materials give a target range of 97–100°F (36–38°C). Follow the product’s handling directions and mix or warm it carefully to avoid hot spots from uneven heating.
8. Use a nursing bottle with a slow-flow nipple
A small pet nursing bottle is the usual choice for a kitten able to suckle. The nipple should release a slow drip, not a stream. Milk flowing too quickly can enter the lungs and cause aspiration, pneumonia, or death. Do not enlarge the nipple opening to make feeding faster.

Bottle-feed safely
9. Hold the kitten belly-down and level
Place the kitten horizontally on its belly, with its head in a neutral position. Do not cradle it on its back like a human baby. A belly-down position helps reduce the risk of formula entering the lungs.

Allow the kitten to draw formula from the nipple at its own pace. Do not squeeze the bottle to push milk into its mouth. Stop if the kitten struggles. Coughing, formula coming from the nose, or difficulty breathing calls for veterinary attention; a kitten too weak to suckle needs professional help with another feeding method.
11. Keep to an age-appropriate feeding schedule
Orphaned kittens generally need feeding every 2–4 hours during the first week. After that, VCA’s guide says intervals can extend to every 4–6 hours until weaning; it also notes that kittens under two weeks need feeds every 2–4 hours. Follow the replacer label and your veterinarian’s directions for the specific kitten, rather than relying on a schedule alone.

Monitor daily and provide basic care
12. Record weight and other changes every day
Weigh each kitten daily during its first four weeks, preferably on a digital scale, and keep a simple log of weight, formula intake, urination, stool, activity, and notable changes. VCA’s guide says kittens should gain at least 7 g per day. Poor gain or failure to thrive warrants veterinary attention.
13. Help an orphaned kitten eliminate
Kittens generally cannot urinate or defecate on their own until about three weeks old. After feeding, gently stimulate the genital area with a warm, moist cotton ball or soft cloth, as described in VCA’s orphaned-kitten guide.

Plan for weaning and know when to call the vet
15. Transition to weaning at the right stage
Kitten milk replacer is the sole nutrition source until about 3–4 weeks of age, when weaning may begin. Ask a veterinarian how to manage the transition for a kitten with health or feeding concerns.
Get veterinary help if the kitten will not feed, becomes cold or lethargic, develops diarrhea, coughs or has difficulty breathing, or is not gaining weight. A newborn can worsen quickly, and hands-on assessment may be needed.
