Famciclovir is an oral antiviral veterinarians use for feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1), which can cause eye, respiratory, and skin disease. There is no safe, universal dose for every cat: published schedules differ, cats process the drug nonlinearly, and a veterinarian must select the dose, interval, duration, and monitoring for the individual patient.
What famciclovir is used for in cats
Famciclovir is a prodrug that the body converts to penciclovir, an antiviral used against FHV-1. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes it as “the prodrug form of penciclovir” (Merck Veterinary Manual: Purine Nucleosides Used in Animals).
Veterinarians may prescribe it when a cat has disease attributed to feline herpesvirus, including ocular, respiratory, or skin signs. It may reduce disease or viral activity, but it does not eliminate latent herpesvirus infection. Signs that look like herpesvirus can have other causes, so treatment depends on veterinary assessment.
Why there is no one-size-fits-all cat dose
Published regimens vary by reference and study setting, and they should not be treated as interchangeable home instructions. Examples summarized by veterinary sources include:

| Source or setting | Reported regimen | Important context |
|---|---|---|
| ABCD systemic treatment table | 90 mg/kg by mouth every 8 hours for 21 days | Listed with support from controlled experimental studies; not an individualized prescription. |
| Shelter study summarized by ABCD | 90 mg/kg by mouth twice daily for 21 days | A shelter protocol; the population and study context differ from an individual pet’s care. |
| Separate seven-day shelter protocol summarized by ABCD | Approximately 30 or 90 mg/kg by mouth twice daily | The study compared the two dose levels; this is not a general treatment recommendation. |
| Merck Veterinary Manual | 90 mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours | Reported as effective in a report; Merck notes that recommendations have varied. |
ABCD also summarizes a 59-cat field series that used three daily doses. These different schedules reflect distinct evidence and clinical circumstances, not a menu from which an owner should choose (ABCD feline herpesvirus guideline; Merck Veterinary Manual).
Do not calculate a dose from a published mg/kg figure, change the interval, or use another cat’s prescription. The prescribing veterinarian needs to choose the regimen and course for your cat and advise whether monitoring is needed.

Why recommendations have changed
In cats, conversion of famciclovir to active penciclovir has complex, nonlinear pharmacokinetics: increasing a dose does not necessarily produce a proportional increase in drug exposure. Merck notes that saturation of a hepatic oxidation step is suspected to contribute.
A 2007 pharmacokinetic and safety study of eight adult cats found that dose-normalized penciclovir concentrations after the tested schedules were notably below the cited in-vitro concentration required for activity against FHV-1. That small study helps explain why regimens have been investigated and revised; it does not establish the right dose for an individual cat (American Journal of Veterinary Research, 2007 study).

- Used to control feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) in cats.
- Helps to control (but not cure) herpesvirus infections, making symptoms less severe and more manageable.
- Use with caution in animals with kidney impairment.
- May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian.
- While this drug does not have an FDA-approved indication for all animal uses, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for use in animals.
What is known about effectiveness
The evidence includes controlled studies in experimentally infected cats, shelter studies that measured viral shedding, and reports involving cats with naturally occurring signs. Those settings answer different questions, and a response in a study does not guarantee that an individual cat will improve.
A 2016 retrospective case series covered 59 cats treated for naturally occurring signs attributed to FHV-1; the cases dated from 2006 to 2013. The report described improvement associated with prescribed famciclovir. In that same series, 29 of 32 owners who responded to a satisfaction survey (91%) said they were satisfied with treatment. These are findings from that particular series, not the likelihood of success for every cat (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2016 case series).

Side effects and precautions
Merck describes adverse effects as mostly gastrointestinal. In the 59-cat retrospective series, potentially famciclovir-attributable adverse effects were reported in 10 cats; the abstract does not enumerate every event. Contact the prescribing veterinarian if your cat vomits, has appetite changes, or develops another concern. Do not stop or alter a prescribed course without veterinary advice.
Kidney function matters: Merck advises caution and dose reduction in cats with renal insufficiency, as well as monitoring routine blood work. Tell the veterinarian about known kidney disease and any other medicines your cat takes.

Merck describes famciclovir as safer for cats than acyclovir and valacyclovir, but that comparison does not mean it is risk-free. Do not substitute another antiviral or give a human medicine unless your veterinarian directs you to do so (Merck Veterinary Manual; 2016 case series).
Giving a prescribed dose and using food
VCA owner guidance suggests trying famciclovir on an empty stomach first. If your cat vomits or seems unwell after a dose, give the next dose with a small amount of food. Ask the prescriber what to do if your cat cannot keep doses down or if food administration is a concern (VCA Animal Hospitals: Famciclovir).
A small amount of food may help with administration when appropriate, but it does not change the prescribed dose. If you use a treat or pill pocket to give the tablet, confirm with the veterinarian that food is suitable for your cat.
