FDA has authorized additional animal drugs for New World screwworm (NWS), including a prevention indication for nitenpyram tablets in specified dogs and cats. But there is no one-size-fits-all product: authorization depends on the animal species, whether the use is prevention or treatment, and the product’s specific conditions. An Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) is not FDA approval for NWS. Owners should check the current FDA product documents with a veterinarian before using any medication.
What changed in FDA’s screwworm drug options?
FDA’s veterinarian information page reported 15 EUAs and three conditional approvals as of September 3, 2026. That is a dated count of different regulatory pathways—not 18 full FDA approvals, and not a promise that every product is available or appropriate for every animal.

The options include companion-animal medications, injectable products and topical wound products. FDA says no drug has full FDA approval for NWS myiasis. Some products have an EUA for particular NWS uses; others have conditional approval with their own species and indication limits. Those authorizations are not interchangeable.
The change most relevant to pet owners is the September 3, 2026 revision to the EUA for nitenpyram tablets. It added prevention to the existing treatment indication for specified dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. The current product fact sheet—not a general description of nitenpyram—sets the exact eligibility and directions.

Does an EUA mean a drug is FDA-approved?
No. An EUA permits emergency use under specified conditions; it does not mean the drug is FDA-approved for treating or preventing NWS. FDA’s June 5, 2026 Dear Veterinarian Letter says veterinarians prescribing an EUA product must explain its emergency-use status, discuss potential risks and benefits and available alternatives, and explain any applicable food-animal withdrawal times.
Conditional approval is a separate pathway, not the same as an EUA or full approval. FDA’s NWS veterinarian page explains that drugs may be used legally for NWS when used according to their labels or authorizations. A product with only an EUA or conditional approval generally cannot be used extralabel. Certain drugs fully approved for other indications may be used extralabel under applicable rules, but an NWS EUA does not itself authorize broader use.

The federal declaration that enabled FDA to issue animal-drug EUAs addressed the threat to warm-blooded animals and the food supply. HHS’s announcement said the risk to people in the United States was very low at that time; that was a dated statement, not a current human-risk assessment.

FDA’s veterinarian page also lists conditionally approved examples such as Dectomax-CA1 for cattle, Exzolt Cattle-CA1 for specified cattle, and Credelio Quattro-CA1 for dogs. Their authorizations and indications differ from one another and from the EUA examples above; check each product’s current documents rather than inferring a use from its species or drug class.
Can I use a screwworm preventive on my dog or cat?
There is a prevention option for certain dogs and cats under the revised nitenpyram EUA, but eligibility and directions come from its current fact sheet. Do not assume every nitenpyram product, dose, animal, or use is covered by that authorization. Simparica TRIO, by contrast, is authorized for NWS treatment in dogs and puppies, not prevention, and is prescription-only.

For an individual pet, ask a veterinarian to identify the specific product and confirm that the animal meets its authorized conditions. Do not substitute a livestock product, another pet medication, or a product’s use for a different indication.
Why do food-animal restrictions matter?
For animals that may enter the food supply, authorization conditions can affect when meat may be used and whether an animal may be treated at all. Negasunt’s 28-day slaughter withdrawal is specific to that product and its authorization; it must not be applied to another drug. Its restriction on use in animals producing milk for human consumption and its calf and veal restrictions also apply specifically to Negasunt.

Veterinarians must explain applicable withdrawal times when prescribing EUA products. Follow the product-specific FDA authorization and veterinary directions for use, storage and disposal; do not extrapolate from another product’s terms.
How should owners and veterinarians check a product?
- Start with FDA’s current veterinarian information page. It is the central source for the current authorization list, product fact sheets, letters of authorization and Freedom of Information summaries.
- Open the specific product’s current documents. Confirm species, age or weight eligibility, prevention versus treatment, route, warnings, access conditions and any food-animal restrictions.
- Discuss the choice with a veterinarian. For an EUA product, the veterinarian should explain the EUA status, potential risks and benefits, alternatives, and applicable withdrawal times.
- Follow only the authorized terms and directions. A product’s availability, species, or general active ingredient does not establish that it is authorized for a particular animal or purpose.
The roster and authorization terms can change. Use FDA’s live materials and the relevant product documents rather than relying on an older list or announcement.
