Feed your West Highland White Terrier (Westie) a complete-and-balanced food suited to its life stage, measure each day’s portion, and adjust it to your dog’s activity and body condition with veterinary guidance. Puppies and adults have different needs; no single food or serving amount is right for every Westie.

What should you feed your Westie?

Choose a complete-and-balanced commercial food labeled for your dog’s life stage: growth for a puppy, adult maintenance for an adult, or an all-life-stages food appropriate to the dog. PetMD identifies AAFCO-labeled commercial kibble or wet food as one way to provide a complete and balanced diet. Follow the product’s current package directions and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure whether it fits your dog.

For example, Royal Canin describes its West Highland White Terrier Adult dry food as intended for Westies over 10 months. The manufacturer says it meets AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance; that statement applies to this named product and life stage, not to every dog or as an independent endorsement. Its label lists 3,730 kcal of metabolizable energy per kilogram, or 339 kcal per cup as fed, with the cup value calculated. Check the current label because product information can change. Royal Canin’s product details and feeding guide

When comparing foods, check life-stage adequacy, calorie density, whether the portion fits your dog’s needs, and whether a diagnosed condition calls for a prescribed diet. A breed-specific name or label alone does not establish that a food is superior for an individual Westie.

ROYAL CANIN West Highland White Terrier Adult Dry Dog Food, 10 lb Bag
  • FORMULATED FOR PUREBRED WEST HIGHLAND TERRIERS: Royal Canin West Highland White Terrier Adult Dog Food is designed to meet the nutritional needs of purebred West Highland White Terriers 10 months and older
  • SPECIALIZED KIBBLE: Unique kibble shape helps White Terriers easily pick up and chew their food
  • SKIN SUPPORT: Helps provide skin care by reinforcing the skin barrier with essential nutrients to support healthy skin and coat
  • COAT HEALTH: Maintains a Westie’s unique double-layer coat with specific amino acids and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids for coat care
  • HIGHLY PALATABLE: Exceptional aromas and flavors satisfy picky eaters

How much should you feed a Westie?

Use the food’s calorie information and feeding chart as a starting point, not a personalized prescription. Calorie needs vary with size, metabolism and activity. Ask your veterinarian to estimate your dog’s needs, then measure the daily ration and adjust it as needed based on weight and body condition.

Royal Canin’s US adult Westie food chart illustrates how portions can vary even at the same weight: for an 8 kg (18 lb) dog, it lists 115 g per day for low activity, 133 g for medium activity and 151 g for high activity. These are manufacturer guide amounts for that product, not universal recommendations. Use the chart on the specific food you feed and consult your veterinarian about an individual ration. Chicken Chips Dog Treats for West Highland White Terrier, 5 oz
  • MADE FOR YOUR WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER: single ingredient chicken chips for a small dog with a big appetite for rewards. Snap a crisp into bite size pieces or give it whole, all at under 10 calories a chip. Start with 5 oz, or grab 8 oz for training weeks.
  • ONE INGREDIENT, NOTHING ADDED: 100% chicken breast, sliced thin, dehydrated until crisp. Limited ingredient, all natural: no grains, no fillers, no additives, no preservatives. 80% crude protein and 6% crude fat, so every chip is lean, protein rich meat.
  • TRAINING REWARD, MEAL TOPPER, EVERYDAY SNACK: give them whole after a walk, break them up for puppy class, or crumble one over kibble for a picky eater or a senior. A healthy treat between meals, not a meal: keep treats under 10% of daily calories.
  • CRISPY, CRUNCHY, BREAKABLE: thin deli style chips with a clean snap, not a hard biscuit and not a chewy jerky strip. Break them by hand, no mess. The resealable clamshell tub protects the chips and keeps them fresh: store tightly closed at room temperature.
  • BREED ESSENTIALS, MADE IN THE USA: made in the USA for West Highland White Terrier parents who read labels. Part of the line made breed by breed, so it pairs with your dog's Breed Essentials multivitamin and shampoo. For intermittent or supplemental feeding only.

Use a kitchen scale or another consistent measuring method rather than estimating by eye. Count treats and extras as part of the day’s food; you can reserve some of the measured kibble to use as rewards. Avoid frequent fatty snacks, and do not leave food available all day unless your veterinarian recommends that approach.

How often should a Westie eat?

Puppies

Feed a puppy food formulated for growth, or an appropriate all-life-stages food. PetMD recommends at least three meals a day for puppies, while Royal Canin’s breed guidance recommends three meals until six months. The right schedule can depend on the puppy’s age and circumstances, so follow your veterinarian’s advice. PetMD’s Westie feeding guidance and Royal Canin’s Westie nutrition guidance.

Adults

Measured meals twice daily are a general adult routine described by PetMD. Set portions according to the chosen food, your dog’s needs and veterinary advice rather than automatically splitting a chart amount that does not suit its condition or activity.

How to keep your Westie at a healthy weight

Track your dog’s weight and body condition over time. Overfeeding and free-feeding can contribute to excess weight; if an adult starts gaining too much, VCA advises restricting calories. Ask your veterinarian how much to reduce and how to monitor progress rather than sharply cutting food on your own.

Soft Dog Treats for West Highland White Terrier, Bacon & Banana, 12 oz
  • MADE FOR YOUR WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER: soft baked bacon and banana hearts for a small dog with a big appetite for rewards. Halve one for training or give it whole, 14 calories each. The weight chart on the tub allows 1 to 4 a day for most small breeds.
  • REAL BACON AND SWEET BANANA: bacon is the third ingredient and banana the fifth, with a hint of peanut butter on a base of sunflower meal, potato and flaxseed meal. Free of grain, corn and soy. A savory sweet combination worth barking about.
  • COAT SUPPORTING OMEGAS IN EVERY BITE: omega 6 (2.5% min) and omega 3 (1.5% min) fatty acids from flaxseed meal and sunflower oil, so a soft, shiny coat comes with treat time. 14% protein, 9% fat, 14 calories per 4 g chew.
  • SOFT, CHEWY, EASY TO GIVE: heart shaped soft chews that break in half by hand, gentle on puppies and senior dogs with sensitive mouths, no hard biscuit, no crumbs. The resealable 12 oz tub holds twice a 6 oz bag; store tightly closed at room temperature.
  • BREED ESSENTIALS, MADE IN THE USA: made in the USA for West Highland White Terrier parents who read labels, with over 40% upcycled bananas and sunflower seeds. Pairs with your dog's Breed Essentials multivitamin and shampoo. For intermittent or supplemental feeding only.

Weight-loss portions should be individualized. A West Highland White Terrier Foundation handout illustrates a veterinarian-directed plan for one obese Westie using a calculated daily allowance and measured foods and treats. That single example is not a general ration for other dogs. West Highland White Terrier Foundation: Digestive System—Obesity

Do Westies need a special diet for skin or other health problems?

Do not choose a special food to prevent or treat a health problem without veterinary advice. Some Westies may need a veterinarian-recommended diet for allergies or liver problems, according to VCA; the appropriate food depends on the individual diagnosis. VCA’s West Highland White Terrier guidance

A UK study of West Highland White Terriers under primary veterinary care in 2016 identified allergic skin disorder and obesity among common health issues in that study population. It does not establish that a particular food prevents or treats either condition, or that the findings describe all Westies everywhere. The VetCompass study and its population context
