Why are most orange cats male?
A typical male cat has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. If his X carries the orange variant, he can have an orange coat. A typical female has two X chromosomes and generally needs the orange variant on both to have an entirely orange coat.
When a female has one orange and one non-orange variant, random X-chromosome inactivation during early development can leave different X chromosomes active in different groups of cells. This can create patches of orange and dark fur. Female orange cats exist; the inheritance pattern makes the outcomes more varied, not impossible.

How do tortoiseshell and calico patterns form?

What did researchers discover about orange-cat genetics in 2025?
Two independent teams published studies in Current Biology on May 15, 2025, identifying a deletion in a non-coding region of X-linked ARHGAP36 associated with orange fur. Because the deletion is non-coding, it does not change the ARHGAP36 protein itself.

Kyushu University reports that its team analyzed DNA from 18 cats—10 with orange fur and 8 without—and found the deletion in the orange cats but not the non-orange cats. The team reported the same pattern in 49 additional cats. These are findings from the reported samples, not a population-wide estimate of orange-cat prevalence.
The researchers also examined skin samples from four calico cats. They found more ARHGAP36 activity in melanocytes from orange patches than in sampled black or white patches, and linked higher activity to reduced activity in genes involved in pigment production. Researchers propose that this may shift pigment away from dark eumelanin toward pheomelanin, which can produce orange fur. The full molecular pathway is not yet known.
Can a male cat be tortoiseshell or calico?
Yes, but male tortoiseshell and calico cats are rare. A typical male has one X chromosome, while the patchwork pattern is commonly associated with having different X-linked color variants active in different cell groups. The MSD Veterinary Manual describes rare male cases with an XXY chromosome complement and says that this complement causes sterility.
Do not use coat appearance to diagnose an individual cat’s chromosomes or fertility. If you have questions about a particular cat, ask a veterinarian about appropriate evaluation.

Are orange cats really friendlier or more chaotic?

Does orange fur mean a cat is a particular breed?
