Who should get the FeLV vaccine?

Adult cats
For adults, FeLV vaccination is generally a risk-based decision. Regular contact with FeLV-positive or status-unknown cats raises risk. Examples include roaming outdoors or living with cats whose FeLV status is unknown. A small household of cats known to be FeLV-negative, with limited, supervised, or no outdoor access, is a lower-risk situation. What is the FeLV vaccine schedule?
- Establish FeLV antigen status before vaccination. AAHA/AAFP guidance and the U.S. manufacturer recommend diagnostic testing first. Testing and interpretation should be directed by a veterinarian; vaccination is not a substitute for knowing a cat’s status. - Give the primary series. The usual course is two doses 3–4 weeks apart, beginning as early as 8 weeks of age. Follow the interval specified for the product used; the U.S. PUREVAX page specifies three weeks.
- Plan the first booster. A booster is recommended 12 months after the last dose of the primary series.
- Set later boosters according to risk and label. AAHA/AAFP guidance recommends annual boosters for cats at high risk. Some inactivated vaccines may permit 2–3-year intervals for adult cats with less regular exposure, where the product’s local licence allows it. Do not assume that interval applies to every vaccine or cat.

- The appointment or examination fee
- FeLV testing

What side effects can the vaccine cause?
Reported reactions vary by product and territory, so label frequencies should not be generalized to every FeLV vaccine. The U.S. manufacturer describes possible transient pain, lethargy, fever, and inflammatory or hypersensitivity reactions. U.S. PUREVAX FeLV information.
The UK Purevax FeLV leaflet, revised June 2025, lists injection-site nodules as very common and says small nodules regress within 1–4 weeks. It places lethargy, hyperthermia, reduced appetite, vomiting, and hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis in less frequent categories. Rare injection-site sarcoma risk
Feline injection-site sarcoma is a separate, rare concern associated with injectable vaccines. AAHA/AAFP advises using a distal limb or tail injection site and keeping complete records of the site and route, which can help manage a mass if one develops. For an adult cat, focus the discussion on exposure risk, vaccine type, the booster interval allowed by the product label, and whether testing is part of the plan. AAHA/AAFP notes conflicting evidence when comparing the efficacy and safety of recombinant and inactivated vaccines, so the available guidance does not support treating one type as universally superior.
