Cat bronchitis and feline asthma affect the lower airways and can cause similar coughing and breathing symptoms, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. Asthma involves inflamed, narrowed airways; chronic bronchitis is a persistent inflammatory disease that may occur without the airway constriction associated with asthma. A cough alone cannot distinguish them. If your cat is breathing with its mouth open or visibly struggling to breathe, seek emergency veterinary care now.
What do “cat bronchitis” and feline asthma mean?
Feline asthma is generally understood as an allergic or immune-mediated inflammatory airway syndrome. In response to inhaled particles, the airways can become inflamed and constricted, with mucus that makes it harder for air to move. Merck describes airway hyperresponsiveness and eosinophilic inflammation as features of feline asthma (Merck Veterinary Manual: Feline Bronchial Asthma).

Chronic bronchitis is also a lower-airway disease, but it is not simply another name for asthma. It involves ongoing airway inflammation and can cause persistent coughing; it may lack the bronchoconstriction associated with asthma. The conditions overlap in symptoms and sometimes in diagnostic findings, so distinguishing them requires veterinary assessment (Merck Veterinary Manual: Species Approach to Inflammatory Airway Disease in Animals).

Cornell estimates that 1–5% of cats have asthma, but that figure comes from its page updated in July 2014; it should not be read as a new prevalence study (Cornell Feline Health Center: Feline Asthma).

What causes airway inflammation in cats?
Feline asthma
Cornell describes asthma as an allergic response to inhaled allergens. On exposure, immune activity can lead to swelling, airway narrowing, and mucus accumulation. Possible triggers or irritants to discuss with your veterinarian include tobacco smoke, perfumes, pollen, mold, and dust. Exposure reduction may be a sensible part of management, but avoiding an irritant or using an environmental product has not been established as a cure for an individual cat.
Chronic bronchitis
The underlying cause of chronic bronchitis is not always identified. Irritants, recurrent infection, and dental disease may contribute, and chronic airway changes can persist. A veterinarian must consider these possibilities alongside asthma and other diseases rather than assuming that a coughing cat has one particular condition.

What symptoms should you watch for?
Possible signs of feline asthma or another lower-airway problem include:
- Repeated coughing or hacking
- Wheezing
- Rapid breathing or increased effort to breathe
- Difficulty breathing, including open-mouth breathing
Episodes may be intermittent or mild, but a severe attack can become life-threatening. A cat may crouch and extend its neck during an episode, but posture alone does not identify the cause. Coughing and breathing difficulty can also arise from chronic bronchitis, infection, parasites, heartworm, heart failure, fluid around the lungs, cancer, or other lung disease.

- Feline Aerosol Chamber with Unique Comfort Feeder : Training a cat to accept an aerosol chamber can be challenging. The Neobay spacer features a unique 'Comfort Feeder' spoon attachment that holds treats, helping your cat associate the mask with positive rewards. This design aims to reduce resistance and help transition cats to their daily routine, as most cats are food-motivated.
- Chamber Inhaler with High-Sensitivity Flow Indicator: The ultra-thin (0.1mm) Flow Indicator is designed for high sensitivity. This visual aid flutters(wide-angle) with your cat's respiration, helping you coordinate the MDI actuation with their inhalation. It provides a visual cue to confirm that the aerosol mist is being drawn from the chamber.
- Anti-Static & Latex-Free Materials: The masks are crafted from soft, latex-free liquid silicone for a gentle fit. The main spacer body is made with anti-static polymers to help minimize medication adherence to the inner walls. The universal silicone backpiece is compatible with most standard prescribed Metered Dose Inhalers (MDI). (Medication not included).
- 2 Masks Cat Inhaler Spacer(Small/Med): Two mask sizes are included to accommodate kittens and adult cats. The fully enclosed design creates a secure seal to help direct aerosolized medication toward the lungs. Efficient delivery of physical helps maximize the utility of the prescribed chamber compared to open-air/oral administration. minimizing waste and lowering long-term costs.
- Designed for Feline Respiratory Care: The Neobay spacer is designed to assist cats with a respiratory condition. It acts as an effective bridge between the MDI and your pet, which allows the medication to be released into the chamber first, allowing the cat to inhale it at their own pace. It includes a detailed instruction manual to guide you through the process of helping your cat breathe easier. Ideal for pet owners managing feline respiratory conditions.
When breathing trouble is an emergency
If your cat is open-mouth breathing or visibly struggling to breathe, seek emergency veterinary care now. Do not delay care to try an inhaler, supplement, air-cleaning product, or online diagnosis. Breathing difficulty has multiple possible causes, and treatment depends on identifying the underlying problem (Cornell Feline Health Center: Dyspnea).
How do veterinarians diagnose asthma or bronchitis?
There is no single definitive test for feline asthma. The veterinarian combines the cat’s history, physical examination, and signs with tests that help assess the airways and rule out other causes. Depending on the case, this may include chest radiographs or other imaging, blood or allergy tests, analysis of airway secretions, or bronchoscopy with sampling.

Radiographs may show airway changes or overinflation, but they do not confirm asthma on their own; findings can be absent or overlap with other respiratory disorders. CT may have a role, although Cornell describes its use for this purpose as still somewhat experimental on its asthma page. The veterinarian interprets any results in the context of the full case.
Potential mimics include chronic bronchitis, lungworms and other parasites, infectious pneumonia, heartworm, and cancer. That is why a cough or wheeze should not be treated as proof of asthma or as a reason to start medication without veterinary direction.

How are feline asthma and bronchitis treated?
Treatment is chosen by a veterinarian according to the diagnosis and the cat’s condition. For feline asthma, the main goal is generally to control airway inflammation with corticosteroids. The medication may be given orally, by inhalation, or by injection. The route and schedule depend on the individual cat.
Bronchodilators such as albuterol or terbutaline may be considered alongside anti-inflammatory treatment in some cases. Merck says bronchodilators should not be used alone to treat feline asthma. Do not give a human inhaler or alter a cat’s medication without explicit veterinary instructions.
Medication routes and roles
| Option | Role | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Corticosteroid, oral | Anti-inflammatory | One possible delivery route; the veterinarian sets the treatment plan. |
| Corticosteroid, inhaled | Anti-inflammatory | May be delivered with a metered-dose inhaler and feline aerosol chamber. |
| Corticosteroid, injectable | Anti-inflammatory | Another possible route, selected by the veterinarian for the clinical situation. |
| Bronchodilator | Adjunct to reduce airway constriction | May be used in combination with glucocorticoids; it is not sole therapy for feline asthma according to Merck. |
For inhaled medication, a feline aerosol chamber or spacer helps deliver medication from a metered-dose inhaler; the device itself does not treat asthma. Your veterinary team should select the medication, chamber, mask, and schedule and show you how to use them. A veterinarian may first use oral treatment to help a cat acclimate to inhaler handling (VCA Animal Hospitals: Treatment Instructions for Asthma and Bronchitis in Cats).

What can you do at home to support management?
- Ask the veterinarian whether reducing exposure to smoke, perfumes, dust, pollen, or mold is appropriate for your cat.
- Follow the prescribed medication and device instructions; do not stop, substitute, or change treatment without veterinary guidance.
- Monitor coughing and breathing effort as your veterinarian advises, and contact the clinic about worsening or changing signs.
- Do not rely on supplements or air purifiers as established asthma treatment. Cornell notes that some commonly promoted environmental or supplement approaches have not been rigorously tested or conclusively shown to work in feline asthma.
What is the long-term outlook?
Feline asthma is generally managed over time rather than cured. Cornell characterizes it as often progressive, with flare-ups ranging from mild to life-threatening. It also notes that monitoring coughing and respiratory effort and using medication when needed can allow affected cats to live happily for years. That is general guidance, not a prediction for an individual cat; outlook depends on the cat’s condition and response to veterinary care.
