Start with nearby animal shelters and rescue groups. If buying a puppy is the right fit for your household, use breeder directories or referrals only to find leads, then assess each breeder yourself. A website, listing, or registration paper is not proof of responsible care.
Where to look for a dog near you
Local shelters and rescue groups
Check local shelters and rescue groups first. The ASPCA says people considering a pet should first consider adoption from a shelter or rescue group: ASPCA’s policy on sources of companion animals. Contact organizations directly to ask what dogs are currently available, what their adoption process involves, and whether they can refer you to other local groups. Availability changes by location and over time, so no directory can promise that a particular breed, age, or puppy is available near you.

Breeder directories and breed-club referrals
If you decide to buy, the AKC Marketplace and a relevant breed club’s referral contact can help you identify breeders to investigate. The AKC states that it does not endorse or recommend individual breeders; a referral is a starting point, not a guarantee. See its breeder referral contacts and evaluate each breeder independently.

Online sales listings and pet stores
Use online listings to research, not as a substitute for seeing where a puppy was raised. The ASPCA warns that online sellers may misrepresent a puppy’s identity, health, age, or living conditions, and that registry papers do not establish animal welfare. Its guidance on online puppy and kitten shopping explains why photos and sales claims alone are not enough. Do not proceed with a purchase if you cannot meet the dogs and see their living conditions in person.

How to screen a breeder
Arrange a visit to the breeder’s home or kennel. Observe the space, cleanliness, and the dogs’ behavior around the breeder and visitors. The ASPCA’s puppy mill guidance recommends seeing where dogs live and meeting parent dogs; a polished website cannot show you those conditions reliably.
- Meet the puppy’s mother when possible. Ask about the other parent, and observe the adult dogs’ health and temperament.
- Ask for records. Request veterinary and vaccination records, plus relevant breed-health screening. Ask what health conditions are important for the breed.
- Read the written agreement. It should use clear language, explain each party’s responsibilities, and state health and return policies.
- Look for continued responsibility. A careful breeder should discuss how puppies are matched to homes and be willing to take a dog back or help rehome it if circumstances change. Prefer direct contact with the breeder over a broker.
- Leave if basic questions are blocked. Refusal to allow a visit, withheld records, pressure to decide immediately, or evasive answers are reasons to walk away.
These steps reflect the ASPCA’s advice on choosing a dog breeder. No single credential, directory, or document can replace checking the breeder and the dogs in person.

Compare an individual dog and the organization or breeder offering that dog, rather than treating breed preference as the only deciding factor. Consider:

- Whether the dog’s needs and temperament fit your household and lifestyle.
- How clearly the source explains the dog’s health, background, and care.
- Whether you can meet the dog and assess its environment.
- How the source screens homes and matches dogs with people.
- What written care, return, or rehoming support is offered.
- What is actually available in your area.
Ask shelters and breeders specific questions, and take time to consider the answers. Check local requirements directly with the relevant organizations and authorities; guidance here does not determine the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
