The best online vet service depends on what your pet needs and where you are: use chat or triage for guidance and next steps, and choose a veterinarian-led video consultation when a clinical assessment is appropriate. A virtual visit may not replace an exam, testing, or emergency treatment, and prescriptions depend on state law and the veterinarian’s judgment. Of the providers with usable details here, Vetster publishes the clearest current plan information; that is not proof it delivers better care than the others.
What kind of online veterinary help do you need?
“Telehealth” is an umbrella term, not a promise that every online service can diagnose or treat a pet. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) describes telehealth as technology-supported veterinary care. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) distinguishes among advice, teletriage, and telemedicine in its 2025 model regulations. Those model regulations are not the law in every state.

| Service type | What it can help with | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Technician chat | Basic guidance and help deciding what to do next. | A technician is not a veterinarian and cannot provide a veterinarian’s diagnosis or treatment plan. |
| General advice | Questions about routine care or a concern that may not require a clinical assessment. | Advice is not a substitute for an examination when one is needed. |
| Teletriage | A timely virtual assessment of whether the pet needs referral for treatment or urgent in-person care. | Triage helps direct care; it does not guarantee that the problem can be treated remotely. |
| Veterinarian-led telemedicine | A veterinarian assesses the pet remotely and, where legally and clinically appropriate, may recommend treatment. | Veterinary medical care requires a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). Whether one can be established remotely depends on applicable state rules and the clinical circumstances. |
The AVMA says electronic delivery does not lower the professional standard of care. A virtual veterinarian should refer you to in-person care if the pet needs a hands-on examination, diagnostic tests, or treatment that cannot be provided remotely.
Which online vet services are worth considering?
The available provider details do not establish an independent test or a defensible overall winner. The options below are best treated as starting points: compare the service available in your location, the professional you will speak with, the cost, and the route to in-person care.
#1 Best Overall
- Live Stream from Anywhere with Pan/Tilt: Sharp and clear 1080p Full HD provides high quality video right in the palm of your hand. Camera is operated with the Tapo or Kasa App. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required.
- Real-Time Motion/Sound Detection: Get alerts on your smart phone whenever motion or sound is detected even at night (30ft). Enable patrol mode on your home security camera system, to make most use of cameras for home security as pet camera or nanny cam
- No Subscription Storage Option: EC70 mini camera continuously records and stores footage or video clips on a local MicroSD card up to 256 GB (sold separately), with no monthly fees. Or subscribe to Kasa Care Plan where you can view up to 30 days of video history and enjoy more advanced features.
- Smart Actions: As one of the most user-friendly security cameras, EC70 provides you a way to set your lights to turn on when your camera detects motion with Smart Actions, which allow you to create interactions between your camera and other Kasa devices
- For best performance: keep firmware updated by checking the Tapo or Kasa App.
| Service | What the available provider information says | What to verify before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Vetster | Its US site advertises video appointments starting at $102 and follow-up messaging. Its help center lists Vetster Plus at $120 per year as of August 7, 2026, with four appointments and live chat with a veterinary technician. These are provider-published terms, not independent evidence of clinical outcomes. | Confirm the current displayed price, what counts as an included appointment, and whether the service is available for your pet’s location and concern. Prescriptions and medications may involve additional conditions or costs; prescription availability varies by state or province and remains at the veterinarian’s discretion. |
| Chewy Connect with a Vet | Chewy describes technician chat and video visits with licensed veterinarians. The available information does not establish current hours, price, or geographic availability. | Check current eligibility, service hours, cost, and whether a veterinarian-led visit is available where your pet is located. |
| Dutch | Dutch publishes a comparison that discusses its own service and other providers. Current Dutch plan details were not independently verified, so that comparison is not a neutral basis for ranking services. | Confirm current plan terms, which appointments or messages are included, geographic coverage, and what happens if your pet needs in-person care. |
| Pawp and TelaVets | These services appear in Dutch’s comparison, but current first-party service terms were not verified. | Check each provider’s own current information for price, service type, location coverage, and follow-up before relying on a comparison page. |
How should you choose for your pet?
Start with the problem, not the provider’s “best” label. A service that is convenient for a non-urgent question may not be appropriate for a pet that needs testing or immediate treatment.
- Decide whether the concern is urgent. If your pet may need immediate treatment, contact an emergency veterinary clinic or your in-person veterinarian rather than waiting for an online appointment. If you are unsure whether the situation is urgent, a teletriage service can help assess whether referral is needed, but it cannot deliver emergency intervention remotely.
- Check what kind of professional and service you are booking. Confirm whether you will speak with a veterinary technician or a licensed veterinarian, and whether the appointment is advice, triage, or a veterinarian’s telemedicine consultation. A service offering chat does not necessarily include a veterinarian visit.
- Check availability for the pet’s location and concern. Veterinary practice rules are jurisdiction-specific, and a provider may offer different services in different places. Ask whether the specific clinical service is available in the state where your pet is physically located—not just whether the company operates nationally.
- Ask about continuity. Find out whether the appointment includes follow-up messaging, who will respond, and whether an ongoing treatment plan is available. If your pet already has a veterinarian, ask how records or recommendations can be shared.
- Understand the full payment model. Compare the price of a single appointment with any recurring membership, the number of appointments included, and extra charges for medication, prescriptions, or follow-up. Confirm current terms before paying; provider prices and plans can change.
- Know the escalation plan. Before booking, ask what the clinician will do if the pet needs a physical exam, imaging, laboratory testing, or emergency care. A useful service should be clear about when it cannot safely manage the concern online.
Can an online vet prescribe medication?
Sometimes, but not automatically and not everywhere. The AVMA says veterinary medical care requires a VCPR. AAVSB’s 2025 model regulations say prescriptions through telemedicine require a VCPR, while general advice and teletriage do not. These are professional guidance and model rules, not a complete statement of current law in every state.

The FDA explains VCPR elements in the context of veterinary drug rules and directs readers to state authorities for current information. Its state table is specific to veterinary feed directives and was last updated in 2021; it should not be treated as a complete, current guide to state telemedicine rules. In practice, the state where the pet is located, any existing relationship with a veterinarian, the condition, and the clinician’s judgment can all affect whether a prescription is appropriate. Ask the provider about your specific situation; no online service can promise a prescription after a video call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen should you skip telemedicine?
Choose an in-person veterinarian or emergency clinic when your pet may need a physical examination, diagnostic testing, or urgent intervention. A remote clinician cannot examine the animal by touch or perform procedures, and a video image may not provide enough information to assess a problem safely. If the clinician recommends an in-person visit, treat that as a care referral—not a failure of the online service.
