First Horse Equipment Checklist: What to Buy, Borrow, and Skip

Get your first horse set up safely without overspending. This adaptable checklist explains essential stable, tack, grooming, rug, feed and first-aid equipment, with fit and management advice.

Your first horse does not require a warehouse of equipment. Start with safe daily essentials—headcollar and leadrope, water and feeding gear, bedding and mucking-out tools, a correctly fitted bridle and saddle if you ride, grooming supplies, and an equine first-aid kit. Then add rugs, training equipment and specialist items only when your horse, facilities and routine justify them.

This checklist adapts Horse & Hound’s UK-focused equipment list (published 4 October 2026) into a buying plan. Confirm what your livery yard supplies, what arrives with the horse, and what a qualified saddle fitter or instructor recommends before spending money.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Plan the equipment before you shop

Ask the seller or loaning organisation for an inventory of tack, rugs and stable equipment that comes with the horse. Ask your yard manager for a list of supplied fixtures and rules: some yards provide water buckets, forks, wheelbarrows, tie rings, feed rooms or haylage nets, while others expect each owner to bring everything. Your management system also changes the list. Full livery, DIY livery, a home stable, deep-litter bedding, straw versus shavings, ad-lib forage, clipping and regular hacking all create different requirements.

Use these five tests for every purchase:

  • Need: Is it required for this horse’s welfare or your agreed routine, or merely convenient?
  • Fit and safety: Does it suit the horse’s size, shape, temperament and the surface or activity?
  • Supply: Is an equivalent item already provided by the yard or included with the horse?
  • Adaptability: Can one adjustable or modular item replace several rarely used products?
  • Condition and cost: Is second-hand acceptable, or does hidden wear make new equipment safer?

Horse & Hound recommends checking local equestrian centres, second-hand marketplaces and seasonal sales. Never compromise on safety-critical fit or on damaged protective equipment just to reduce the price.

Stable and mucking-out essentials

These are the items you use to contain, feed, water and clean the horse’s space every day.

Item Use Buying decision
Headcollar and leadrope Leading, tying where permitted and handling Essential; check that the headcollar fits and has sound stitching and hardware.
Bedding Dry, comfortable stable floor Choose the material and quantity required by your yard and the horse’s management plan.
Haynets or slow feeder Safe forage presentation and slower eating Match mesh size and attachment method to the horse; ask the yard about approved designs.
Water buckets Constant access to clean water Have enough for the stable and spare or travelling use; confirm whether fixed drinkers are installed.
Metal tie ring Secure tying point Only needed if the stable does not provide a sound, approved ring. Ask before installing one.
Wheelbarrow Moving soiled bedding and forage Often supplied at a yard; otherwise choose a stable, easy-to-clean model.
Broom Sweeping the stable and yard area Essential where the yard does not provide communal brooms.
Bedding-appropriate fork Removing manure and wet bedding Choose a fork designed for your bedding; straw and shavings need different tine patterns.
Manure scoop and shovel Picking up droppings and loading the barrow Useful where a fork alone cannot collect cleanly.

Stable extras

Toys and salt licks are optional. A toy should not create a choking, entanglement or splintering hazard, and a salt lick should complement—not replace—fresh water and a balanced ration. Keep aisles clear, store tools with handles secured, and inspect buckets for sharp cracks or broken handles.

Tack for riding and groundwork

Do not buy a complete tack set by appearance alone. A saddle must fit the horse and rider and be checked as the horse’s shape changes. Arrange a qualified saddle fitter, and have an experienced instructor or other qualified professional help with bridle adjustment and bit or bitless choices.

  • Saddle soap: For routine leather care, following the leather manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Lunge line: Only when you have instruction and a safe, suitable area.
  • Hi-vis exercise sheet: A visibility aid for appropriate hacking conditions; it does not replace lights or legal road-safety practices.
  • Exercise boots: Use only when the horse needs the protection and the boots fit without rubbing or trapping grit.

Specialist boots and training aids are use-dependent, not automatic starter purchases. Horse & Hound’s guidance is explicit: “At Horse & Hound, we always recommend seeking qualified professional advice and instruction before using any training aid.” Introduce one change at a time so you can identify rubbing, altered movement or behavioural problems.

The everyday grooming kit

A comprehensive grooming kit is more useful than a drawer of duplicate products. Keep it in a labelled, washable bag or box and clean brushes regularly so dirt and skin organisms are not transferred between horses.

Core tools

  • Body brush for routine grooming.
  • Dandy brush for loosening dried mud and heavier dirt.
  • Metal and rubber curry combs, used according to coat and sensitivity.
  • Plastic stain-removing brush for stubborn marks.
  • Mane and tail brush plus a mane comb.
  • Face brush for delicate areas.
  • Sponges, kept separate for face, dock and general cleaning.
  • Hoof pick for cleaning feet before and after work.
  • Sweat scraper after bathing or exercise.
  • Storage bag or grooming box.

Seasonal and coat-specific products

Fly spray, horse shampoo, mane-and-tail detangler, hoof oil and equine sun cream can be useful, but buy for an identified need. A grey horse may benefit from a whitening shampoo; another horse may never need it. Patch-test topical products, follow label directions and avoid applying anything to broken skin unless your vet advises it.

Rugs: choose for the horse, not the catalogue

Rugging depends on the individual horse’s coat, age, workload, shelter, clipping status, weather tolerance and body condition. Horse & Hound specifically warns against buying one of every type. A well-fitting, washable system may be all you need, and a liner system can provide flexibility without owning many separate rugs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rug category Published fill description When it may be relevant
No-fill rain sheet No insulation Wet-weather protection when warmth is not required.
Lightweight turnout 50–150 g Some cool or wet conditions, depending on the horse and forecast.
Medium-weight turnout 150–250 g Colder conditions for horses that need more insulation.
Heavyweight turnout More than 250 g Very cold conditions or specific horses; not an automatic winter purchase.
Stable rug Indoor use Extra warmth in a stable where the horse needs it; not designed for turnout.
Cooler rug Light, breathable layer Drying after work or bathing under supervision.
Fly sheet Insect protection Fly season where the horse benefits and the fabric fits securely.
Neck cover Additional neck coverage Only when the chosen rug and horse’s needs justify it.

The 50–150 g, 150–250 g and over-250 g bands are product-category descriptions, not guaranteed temperature ratings. Check the horse under the rug: sweating, shivering, dampness or rubbing means the combination, fit or weight needs review. Remove, dry and inspect rugs frequently, and repair broken fasteners before use.

Turnout and travel equipment

  • Fly mask: Fit so it protects without rubbing eyes or restricting vision.
  • Field-safe headcollar: Use the type approved by your yard and suitable for supervised turnout; never assume a standard headcollar is safe to leave on.
  • Travel boots: Select the correct height and fastening, introduce them at home and check for heat or rubbing.
  • Tail guard: Useful for horses that need tail protection during transport; fit it securely and practise before travel.

Transport requirements vary by vehicle, journey and destination. Confirm the transporter’s rules and carry the horse’s documents, water and emergency contacts separately from routine stable gear.

Feed-room supplies and weighing

Feeding equipment should support the ration designed for this horse, not encourage unmeasured extras. Keep feed dry, labelled and inaccessible to horses that could gorge.

  • Feed buckets and bucket covers.
  • Feed bins with secure lids.
  • Scoop and stirrer.
  • Brush for cleaning buckets.
  • Dustpan and brush for spills.
  • Portable luggage scale for weighing haynets.
  • Weigh tape for monitoring body-weight trends.
  • Treats, used sparingly and recorded if the horse has dietary restrictions.

Weigh forage and bucket feeds rather than relying on scoop volume. A weigh tape is a monitoring tool, not a substitute for veterinary assessment or a calibrated weighbridge when accurate weight is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional management equipment

  • Clippers: Buy or borrow only if you plan to clip and can maintain, handle and use them safely.
  • Electric fencing: Relevant to particular grazing layouts; follow the manufacturer’s installation and yard-safety rules.
  • Grazing muzzle: A management option for a good-doer, introduced gradually with professional advice and regular checks.
  • Ice boots: For specific post-exercise or veterinary protocols, not routine treatment without advice.
  • Stable or field camera: Useful for observation where permitted, but it does not replace physical checks.
  • Portable shower: A convenience for yards without suitable washing facilities.

Build a separate equine first-aid kit

Keep first-aid supplies in a clean, labelled container that is easy to reach but protected from damp, heat and horses. The purpose is to manage a minor injury or provide sensible care after a major accident while you wait for veterinary instructions—not to diagnose or treat conditions beyond your competence.

Horse & Hound’s related first-aid guidance notes that ready-made horse-and-rider kits commonly need additions. Check expiry dates, replace opened or contaminated items and keep your vet’s phone number, the yard emergency contact and the horse’s insurance or identification details with the kit.

What to buy first, and what can wait

Before the horse arrives

  1. Confirm the yard’s supplied equipment, bedding rules and storage space.
  2. Obtain a correctly fitted headcollar, leadrope, water and feed containers, and the required mucking-out tools.
  3. Prepare clean bedding, forage presentation equipment and a labelled first-aid kit.
  4. Arrange a qualified saddle-fit assessment before buying or using a saddle.
  5. Assemble the basic grooming kit and check that every item is clean and serviceable.

After you understand the routine

Buy rugs, fly protection, boots, clippers, fencing equipment and other specialist items after observing the horse through its actual turnout, weather, workload and feeding pattern. Borrowing or buying second-hand can be sensible for non-safety-critical items, provided you can clean them, verify their condition and confirm the fit. Do not share grooming tools or protective equipment between horses without cleaning and inspection.

Common first-horse mistakes

  • Buying a complete wardrobe immediately: Weather, clipping and body condition may show that several rugs are unnecessary.
  • Assuming included tack fits: A saddle or bridle supplied with the horse still needs a fit and condition check.
  • Using one brush set for every horse: This can spread skin problems and mud; label and clean equipment.
  • Choosing equipment by colour or brand: Function, fit, durability and yard rules matter more.
  • Leaving repairs until an emergency: Check stitching, buckles, straps, rug fasteners, buckets and forks weekly.
  • Trying training aids without instruction: Incorrect use can cause pain, resistance or injury; seek qualified professional help first.
  • Confusing convenience with welfare: Cameras, toys and portable showers are useful only after water, forage, shelter, safe handling and veterinary access are covered.

A practical final check

Walk through one ordinary day and one unexpected day. Can you catch and lead the horse, provide clean water and forage, muck out, groom, pick out feet, ride or exercise safely if appropriate, turn out, bring the horse in, and respond to a cut while waiting for the vet? If the answer is yes, you have covered the functional essentials. Add equipment only when a real management decision identifies the need.
