Bringing home a dog is a long-term commitment to daily care, training, preventive medicine and unexpected expenses. The safest start is to confirm that everyone in the household agrees, prepare a confined and hazard-free area, collect the dog’s records, and arrange a veterinary examination soon after arrival. Puppies usually need more supervision and housetraining than adults, but the right choice depends on the individual dog and your household—not age or breed labels alone.
Decide whether your household is ready
A dog needs care every day, including weekends, holidays and periods when plans change. Before accepting a dog, discuss who will provide meals, bathroom breaks, exercise, training, grooming, medication and transport to appointments. Agree on house rules—such as whether the dog may use furniture or which rooms are off-limits—before the dog arrives so that everyone responds consistently.

- Time: Plan for several daily care periods, supervision during adjustment, regular training and companionship. A puppy cannot reliably wait all day for a bathroom break.
- Home and schedule: Check that your housing allows dogs and that your work, school and travel patterns leave a realistic plan for toilet breaks and time alone.
- Money: Budget for food, equipment, routine examinations, vaccines, parasite prevention, grooming and training, plus urgent illness or injury. Veterinary prices differ by location, so ask local practices for estimates rather than relying on a universal first-year total.
- Household fit: Consider children, older adults, allergies, resident pets, stairs, outdoor space and the noise or activity level your household can manage.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends considering whether a puppy or an adult dog is the better match and obtaining available medical history. Expected adult size, activity, temperament, health needs and the amount of supervision you can provide matter more than a breed or age stereotype. No label guarantees how an individual dog will behave.

Puppy or adult dog?
| Factor | Puppy | Adult dog |
|---|---|---|
| Supervision | Usually high: chewing, exploration and frequent bathroom trips require close monitoring. | May require less constant supervision, but the dog still needs an adjustment period and clear boundaries. |
| Training | You establish bathroom habits, alone-time skills and basic cues from the beginning. | May already have useful habits; previous learning can also include behaviors you need to change. |
| Predictability | Adult size, energy and temperament are still developing. | Current size, activity level and behavior are easier to observe, though they can change after settling in. |
| Records | Ask for vaccination, deworming and other available health paperwork. | Request the same information; an adopted dog may have an incomplete or unknown history. |
When meeting a dog, look for clear, bright eyes and a clean, shiny coat, and ask the source to disclose known medical information. Signs of illness or missing records do not automatically rule out adoption, but they should be discussed with a veterinarian and included in your care and budget plan.

Make the home safe before the dog arrives
Set up eating and sleeping areas before bringing the dog through the door. Start with a limited, puppy-proofed zone rather than giving a new dog unrestricted access to the entire home. Use a crate, exercise pen or gates appropriately, and expand access as the dog demonstrates reliable behavior. Guidance from the American Kennel Club’s new-puppy checklist and its preparation guidance supports gradual access and active supervision.
- Secure electrical cords, chargers and dangling cables; block access rather than relying on a puppy not to chew.
- Move medications, cleaning products, chemicals, small objects, children’s toys and foods that are unsafe for dogs out of reach.
- Check plants, trash cans, balconies, stairs, fireplaces and doors for escape or ingestion risks.
- Use gates to separate the dog from rooms that are not ready, resident animals or children who need a break.
- Choose washable bedding and place food and water where spills and traffic will not create hazards.
- Inspect the yard or balcony for gaps, toxic materials and objects a dog could swallow; never assume outdoor space removes the need for supervision.
Keep the first area quiet and predictable. Let the dog investigate at its own pace, provide a place to retreat, and avoid forcing contact with visitors or resident pets.

| Item | Purpose and selection notes |
|---|---|
| Collar or harness and leash | For identification and controlled walks. Fit must be secure without restricting breathing; a growing puppy may need frequent adjustment. |
| ID tag | Include a current phone number and any locally required information. Check that it remains readable and attached. |
| Food and water bowls | Choose stable, easy-to-clean bowls sized for the dog. Ask the source what food the dog is eating before changing it. |
| Appropriate dog food | Use a diet suitable for age, size and health. Discuss a transition or special formula with the veterinarian. |
| Crate or safe confinement | Provides a resting place and helps manage safety and housetraining when introduced positively. It must allow the dog to stand, turn and lie comfortably. |
| Puppy gates or an exercise pen | Limit access while the dog learns the home and create separation from hazards or other pets. |
| Durable, size-appropriate toys | Offer legal chewing and play options; inspect them and remove damaged pieces. |
| Waste bags and cleaning supplies | Make immediate cleanup practical. An enzymatic cleaner can help remove odors that draw a dog back to a soiled spot. |
| Puppy pads (optional) | May suit some housetraining arrangements, but use a consistent plan so pads do not conflict with your intended outdoor routine. |
Plan the first day and first week
- Bring the dog directly to the designated toilet area. Keep the trip calm and allow time to sniff before entering the home.
- Show the prepared zone. Offer water, a meal if appropriate, bedding and a quiet place to rest. Avoid a crowd of visitors.
- Supervise exploration. Use a leash indoors or a gate when needed, and interrupt access to hazards before the dog reaches them.
- Keep a written routine. Record meals, water, urination, bowel movements, sleep and notable behavior. This helps you spot changes and gives the veterinarian useful information.
- Introduce alone time gradually. Begin with brief, calm separations after the dog has toileted and settled; increase duration only while the dog remains comfortable.
- Protect sleep. Puppies sleep often, and overtired dogs can become mouthy or frantic. Schedule quiet periods instead of treating every wakeful moment as play.
Ask the adoption organization, breeder or previous owner what the dog eats, which cues it knows, how it travels and where it has been sleeping. Keeping familiar food and routines initially can reduce change; any diet change should be gradual unless a veterinarian directs otherwise.
Arrange the first veterinary visit promptly
Schedule an examination soon after arrival and take every available record. The AVMA states: “Schedule a veterinary examination to assess the health of your new companion as soon as possible to ensure it receives the appropriate vaccinations and any needed health care.” Read the full guidance at Selecting a pet dog.
Bring vaccination and deworming dates, medication lists, microchip information, diet details and any transport or adoption paperwork. If the history is incomplete or unknown, tell the clinic; do not assume that a dog is fully protected because someone described it as vaccinated.

Questions for the appointment
- Which vaccines are due now, and what follow-up schedule fits this dog’s age, health and local disease risks?
- What parasite prevention is appropriate for intestinal parasites, fleas, ticks and heartworm in your area?
- Is the dog’s current food suitable, how much should it eat, and how should a diet transition be handled?
- What signs require an urgent call, and when should routine rechecks occur?
- When is sterilization appropriate if it has not already been performed?
- When is it safe to attend classes, visit public areas or meet unfamiliar dogs?
The veterinarian can tailor recommendations to the dog’s examination, age, vaccination status, geography and lifestyle. The AKC overview of a puppy’s first vet visit also recommends preparing records and discussing preventive care, nutrition and follow-up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuild a housetraining routine
Expect housetraining to take weeks or months, not a single weekend. Consistency and prevention work better than punishment. Take the dog to the chosen toilet area after waking, eating, drinking, playing and vigorous activity, and at regular intervals appropriate to its age. Stay present, wait quietly, and reward immediately after elimination in the correct place.
- Limit unsupervised freedom with a gate, pen or appropriately introduced crate.
- Watch for sniffing, circling, sudden wandering or leaving play; these can precede elimination.
- When you cannot supervise, use the safe confinement area and provide a suitable chew or resting option.
- If an accident starts, interrupt calmly and take the dog outside; do not yell, rub its nose in the mess or punish after the fact.
- Clean indoor accidents thoroughly so odor does not become a cue to repeat the behavior.
Accidents, diarrhea, straining, unusually frequent urination or a sudden regression can signal a medical problem. Contact the veterinarian instead of assuming every change is disobedience.

Start reward-based training and safe socialization
Teach a name, attention, gentle handling, recall foundation, walking skills and simple cues with small rewards, clear timing and short sessions. Reward the behavior you want to see; avoid methods that frighten or physically hurt the dog. A qualified, reward-based trainer can help you adapt exercises to the dog and household.
The first three months are an important socialization period according to AKC socialization guidance. Socialization means calm, positive exposure to varied people, surfaces, sounds, handling and environments while keeping the puppy below its fear threshold. It is not a requirement to greet every person or dog.
Recommended Free Tools
- Let the puppy observe new situations from a comfortable distance and pair them with treats or play.
- Keep sessions brief; stop while the puppy is still relaxed and curious.
- Never force approach, restrain a frightened puppy for a photo or flood it with unfamiliar stimulation.
- Ask your veterinarian how vaccination status and local disease prevalence should shape puppy classes, parks, sidewalks and contact with unfamiliar dogs.
- Arrange controlled meetings with healthy, appropriately vaccinated dogs and people you trust, following veterinary advice.
Grow the dog’s world gradually. A puppy that hides, freezes, growls, snaps or cannot recover after exposure needs more distance and a slower plan. Seek veterinary guidance and qualified behavior help early, especially when safety is involved.

Prepare for ongoing care and changing needs
Your plan should include daily exercise suited to the dog, mental enrichment, grooming, nail and dental care, identification, parasite prevention and regular veterinary checks. Needs change as the dog grows: collars and harnesses may need new sizes, food portions require adjustment, and an adolescent dog may test boundaries even after an easy puppy period.
Create a written emergency plan with the clinic’s phone number, an after-hours contact, transport arrangements and a trusted caregiver. Keep records of vaccines, medications, microchip details and insurance or savings information in one accessible place. Because no source establishes a universal lifetime or first-year cost, ask nearby veterinary practices for current estimates and reserve funds for unexpected treatment.
When to get extra help
- Veterinary care: Contact the clinic for vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, collapse, severe pain, inability to urinate, suspected poisoning or any rapid deterioration. Puppies and newly adopted dogs can become ill quickly.
- Training support: Hire a qualified trainer when housetraining stalls, leash behavior is unsafe, separation distress develops or you need help teaching handling and cooperative care.
- Behavior and safety: For biting that causes injury, guarding, serious fear or aggression, ask your veterinarian for a behavior referral. Do not attempt risky confrontations or punishment-based “fixes.”
A successful first home is not defined by a perfect first week. It is a prepared environment, a predictable routine, timely medical care and a willingness to adjust the plan to the dog in front of you.
