Fish Oil Supplements for Cats in 2026: EPA/DHA Guide and Verified Picks

Fish oil can supply EPA and DHA, but labels vary widely. This 2026 guide explains feline dosing uncertainty, safety warnings, recall context and two documented cat-compatible products without inventing an unsupported top-ten ranking.

Fish oil can provide cats with the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, but “omega-3” or “fish oil” on the front of a package does not tell you how much of either fatty acid your cat will receive. Choose a product that declares EPA and DHA separately or together, gives cat-specific directions, and can be fitted into the cat’s complete diet. A veterinarian should set the dose when your cat has a medical condition, takes medication, is pregnant or nursing, or already eats a therapeutic or fish-based food.

This guide does not present a tested or independently ranked list of ten winners. Current label information supports two clearly documented cat-compatible examples; other products should not be called “best” until their current formulations, directions and safety information have been checked. Manufacturer labels can change, so verify the package in hand before use.

What fish oil gives a cat

Fish oil is mainly used as a source of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). VCA describes fish oil as rich in EPA and DHA, while veterinary nutrition guidance recommends checking the actual EPA and DHA declaration rather than relying on a total omega-3 claim.

EPA and DHA are the numbers that matter

A bottle may advertise hundreds of milligrams of “fish oil” while providing much less EPA plus DHA. For comparison, one documented feline pouch contains 480 mg of fish oil but only 150 mg of combined EPA and DHA. Those are different quantities: the 480 mg figure is the total oil, not the amount of the two fatty acids.

When a label lists EPA and DHA separately, add them to find the stated combined amount per serving. If neither amount is disclosed, you cannot make a meaningful potency comparison with a product that provides those numbers. Do not infer potency from capsule size, liquid volume or a generic “omega-3” phrase.

Food can already supply omega-3s

Commercial foods, especially fish-based or therapeutic diets, may contribute EPA and DHA. Adding a supplement without counting those nutrients can push total intake higher than intended. A veterinarian can assess the food, treats and every supplement together rather than calculating from the fish-oil product alone.

Can cats have fish oil?

Many cats can tolerate a veterinarian-selected fish-oil product, but “natural” does not mean risk-free and not every cat needs supplementation. Fish oil is a nutritional supplement, not a proven treatment or prevention for every skin, joint or other disease. The appropriate product and amount depend on the cat’s diet, weight, health history and reason for use.

VCA lists possible mild effects such as gastrointestinal upset, fishy odor, an oily coat, itching or skin flaking, and delayed wound healing. More serious signs include unusual bruising or bleeding, an allergic reaction, pancreatitis, loss of appetite, incoordination or seizures. Stop the product and contact a veterinarian promptly if serious signs appear.

Cats that need veterinary advice before supplementation

  • cats with a clotting disorder or planned surgery;
  • cats receiving anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication;
  • cats with diabetes, a history of pancreatitis or persistent diarrhea;
  • cats that are pregnant or nursing;
  • cats with a known food or fish sensitivity; and
  • cats taking several medicines or supplements at once.

In the United States, the FDA does not review ordinary non-drug pet supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. A product being available for purchase is therefore not the same as an FDA approval.

How much fish oil can you give a cat?

There is no universally accepted feline fish-oil dose. One veterinary nutrition author describes 30–50 mg per kilogram of body weight of combined EPA plus DHA as a typical clinical range, while emphasizing that dose calculations are uncertain and that EPA and DHA in the cat’s food must be included. The range is context from that author, not a universal owner instruction or a safe upper limit.

A separate review notes that feline therapeutic-supplementation data are scarce. Study diets can show what researchers fed in a particular experiment, but they do not establish one dose for every cat or condition. The NRC safe upper limit cited in the veterinary discussion has not been published for cats.

Why a simple online dosing chart can mislead

Two cats with the same body weight may eat different foods, have different medical risks and receive products with very different EPA/DHA concentrations. Measuring “one pump” or “one capsule” also means little unless the label defines the EPA and DHA delivered by that measure. A veterinarian should calculate the total from the complete diet and then choose a product and serving that fit that calculation.

What to ask your veterinarian

  • Is supplementation appropriate for this cat’s diagnosis, age and current diet?
  • How many milligrams of combined EPA plus DHA should come from all sources?
  • What amount of the chosen product equals that target?
  • Should the product be stopped before dental work, surgery or another procedure?
  • Which symptoms require stopping the supplement or an urgent examination?

How to compare a cat fish-oil supplement

Use the label, not the marketing headline, as your comparison tool. Record the following before buying or opening a product.

  • EPA per labeled serving: note the exact milligrams, not just “omega-3.”
  • DHA per labeled serving: record it separately when shown.
  • Combined EPA plus DHA: add the two values when the label does not provide a total.
  • Cat directions: confirm that the manufacturer explicitly includes cats and gives a cat serving or weight instruction.
  • Serving definition: identify whether a serving is a capsule, packet, measured milliliter or pump.
  • Format: liquid, capsule and single-use packet each have different measuring and storage considerations.
  • Whole formula: check whether the product is a joint-support or essential-fatty-acid formula rather than fish oil alone.
  • Cautions: look for warnings about medication, surgery, pregnancy, pancreatitis, bleeding or gastrointestinal effects.
  • Storage and freshness directions: follow the current package instructions after opening; do not assume all oils have the same storage requirements.

Do not rank products by total fish-oil milligrams when EPA and DHA are undisclosed. Purity, contaminant testing, freshness, sustainability and third-party certification should not be assumed unless the current product documentation verifies each claim.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Feline Joint Care

The manufacturer describes this as a cat-only product and recommends veterinary examination before use. Each 75 g pouch lists 480 mg of fish oil and 150 mg of combined EPA and DHA. Because the formula is marketed for joint support and includes more than fish oil, treat the 150 mg figure as the pouch’s declared EPA-plus-DHA amount, not as 150 mg of total fish oil.

The manufacturer supplies size-based feeding instructions on its product page. Use the current package or product page for the cat’s weight category rather than applying a generic capsule or milliliter rule. If the cat eats a food that already contains EPA or DHA, have the veterinarian account for both sources.

Virbac AllerDerm Omegaderm

Virbac describes AllerDerm Omegaderm as an essential-fatty-acid supplement for dogs and cats. The 4 mL packet listed for small dogs and cats provides 179.2 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA, or 299.2 mg combined. The same information lists an 8 mL packet for medium and large dogs; that dog-oriented size should not be assumed to be the correct feline serving.

Because packet sizes and directions can change, check the current carton for cat-specific instructions. A single-use packet can simplify measuring, while a liquid format may be easier to mix into food for a cat that refuses capsules; either way, the veterinarian should confirm the amount.

Why there are not ten verified “best” products here

A genuine top-ten comparison would require current, product-by-product confirmation of cat use, serving size, EPA, DHA, directions and cautions. The available documentation does not establish ten such products, live prices or inventory, and no independent testing or 2026 market ranking was performed. Listing unverified products to reach the number ten would create a more confident-looking list than the evidence supports.

Choosing a liquid, capsule or packet

Liquid

Liquid products can be mixed into food and allow the serving to be adjusted in measured milliliters. The trade-off is that a dropper or pump must deliver a consistent volume, and the cat may reject food with a fishy smell. Use the measuring device supplied with the product and record the EPA/DHA amount for that exact volume.

Capsule

Capsules provide a fixed serving and can reduce handling of an open bottle. They may be difficult for cats that resist pills, and a capsule should not be opened or punctured unless the manufacturer or veterinarian says that is appropriate. The capsule’s total oil weight is not a substitute for its EPA/DHA declaration.

Single-use packet

Packets offer a premeasured quantity and limit repeated exposure of the remaining product to air. They are convenient for travel or for households that do not want to measure liquid, but the entire packet may exceed an individual cat’s calculated daily amount. Confirm whether the label permits partial use and how the remainder should be stored.

How to introduce fish oil safely

  1. Review the diet and medical record. Give your veterinarian the food label, treats, current supplements and medication list. Ask whether EPA and DHA are already present in meaningful amounts.
  2. Select a product with declared EPA and DHA. Prefer a label that identifies the serving, cat directions and cautions. Do not substitute a product simply because its total fish-oil number is larger.
  3. Confirm the calculated serving. Convert the veterinarian’s EPA-plus-DHA target into the product’s capsule, packet or measured-liquid serving. Do not use the 30–50 mg/kg clinical range as a self-prescribed dose.
  4. Start only as directed. Follow the package and veterinary instructions; do not add extra servings because a cat misses a meal or refuses part of a mixed portion.
  5. Monitor tolerance. Watch appetite, stool, vomiting, skin, coat, odor and any bruising or bleeding. Keep a written record of the product, serving and start date.
  6. Reassess with the veterinarian. Report persistent gastrointestinal signs, an oily coat, itching, poor appetite or any change around a procedure. The veterinarian may reduce, stop or replace the supplement.

Medication, illness and procedure cautions

Fish oil may affect bleeding risk, so cats with clotting disorders or cats receiving anticoagulants need professional oversight. Diabetes, pancreatitis history and chronic diarrhea also warrant a veterinary decision before supplementation. Pregnancy and nursing require the same caution because the safety of a particular product and amount may differ from an adult maintenance situation.

Tell the veterinary team about fish oil before surgery, dental work or a biopsy. Delayed wound healing and abnormal bleeding are among the concerns listed by VCA. If a cat develops repeated vomiting, severe diarrhea, marked weakness, loss of appetite, coordination problems, seizures, facial swelling or unusual bleeding, discontinue the product and seek prompt veterinary care.

What the 2023 FDA recall does—and does not—mean

On March 10, 2023, the FDA reported that Stratford Care USA’s recall of specified lots of multiple private-label omega-3 products for cats and dogs involved possible elevated vitamin A. The notice identified lots 31133 and 30837, stated that no other Stratford Care USA products were affected, and records the recall as completed and terminated.

That event is not evidence that every fish-oil supplement is unsafe. If you have a product from that company, compare the exact brand and lot with the FDA notice and follow the manufacturer or veterinarian’s instructions. For any product, retain the lot number and contact the manufacturer if the oil smells rancid, the packaging is damaged or the label differs from the current directions.

Practical checklist before you buy

  • Is the product explicitly labeled for cats?
  • Does the label state EPA and DHA in milligrams per serving?
  • Can you measure the serving accurately for this cat?
  • Have you included EPA and DHA from the cat’s regular food?
  • Does the formula contain ingredients beyond fish oil that matter to your cat’s diet or condition?
  • Are there cautions relevant to medication, bleeding, diabetes, pancreatitis, diarrhea, pregnancy or nursing?
  • Do you have a plan for storage, monitoring and stopping the product if adverse signs appear?

For most owners, the safest “top pick” is not the bottle with the largest fish-oil number. It is the product whose current label makes EPA and DHA clear, whose serving can be measured, and whose use has been reviewed against the cat’s complete diet and health history.
