Provide an ammonia source, keep the filter running, and test ammonia and nitrite; add livestock only after the tank passes a measured completion check, not because a certain number of days has passed.
What a fishless cycle does
Fishless cycling grows microbial populations in the filter and other tank surfaces that process ammonia first into nitrite, then into nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite can harm fish, and neither is visible in the water, so clear-looking water is not evidence that a tank is ready.

The cycle needs an ammonia source even though no fish are present. Testing shows whether ammonia is being processed and whether nitrite has appeared and then declined. Nitrate and pH can help interpret progress, but nitrate alone does not confirm that the filter can handle an ammonia load.
What to prepare
- The aquarium, filter, substrate, and water you intend to use when the fish are added.
- A water conditioner suitable for treating your tap water. Follow its directions to address chlorine or chloramine.
- A test kit that measures ammonia and nitrite; nitrate testing is useful as supporting information. API recommends a master test kit for cycle monitoring, and Seachem identifies ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate kits as useful tools.
- One ammonia source: a purpose-made ammonium-chloride product or fish food.
- A log for test results, doses, and water changes. Record the test kit’s units and the product directions so you do not confuse different ways of reporting nitrogen.
Set up the tank as planned and run the filter throughout cycling so developing microbes have a place to establish. Keep fish and other livestock out while using a fishless-cycle ammonia product.

Choose an ammonia source
| Source | Dose precision | Monitoring and correction | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Measured ammonium chloride | More controlled when the product provides a measured dose. | Test ammonia and nitrite and follow that product’s directions; do not add extra simply to chase a color-card value. | Recipes vary by formulation and reporting units. Use only the current instructions for the product you chose. |
| Fish food | Less precise; it must decompose before it supplies ammonia. | Test regularly and allow time for decomposition before deciding whether more is needed. | Adding more because the test has not changed immediately can create an unnecessarily high load. |
For context, DrTim’s Quick Guide specifies four drops per gallon of its ammonium chloride solution to target about 2 ppm ammonia-nitrogen. Those are instructions for that product and protocol, not a transferable recipe. DrTim’s also advises that ammonia or nitrite above 5 ppm in its method can slow progress and recommends water changes if either exceeds that level. Keep the stated units in view: ammonia-nitrogen, total ammonia, and ion readings are not interchangeable. Fritz Fishless Fuel has its own dosing directions and warns against use in an aquarium containing livestock. Never transfer drops-per-gallon directions between products.
Bacterial supplements are optional aids, not a substitute for providing an ammonia source and verifying conversion with tests. Seachem lists bacterial supplements among possible cycle aids; follow the chosen product’s instructions and continue monitoring.

Run the cycle and read the tests
- Start with treated water. Fill the aquarium, condition the water according to the conditioner label, and start the filter.
- Add ammonia using one method. Dose the selected ammonium-chloride product exactly as its label directs, or add a modest amount of fish food and allow it to break down. Account for any ammonia already present in source water or the tank before dosing again.
- Test ammonia and nitrite regularly. Follow the testing schedule for your chosen method and write down results with units. Test nitrate and observe pH as supporting indicators.
- Keep the filter running and let the pattern develop. Ammonia generally appears first; nitrite may rise as ammonia is processed, then fall as another microbial population converts nitrite to nitrate. The stages can overlap or be difficult to see clearly, so interpret results as a sequence rather than relying on one reading.
- Adjust only according to the method’s instructions. Avoid repeatedly adding ammonia to force a particular test color. If levels are unexpectedly high or progress stalls, check the product’s troubleshooting guidance, your source-water readings, and pH.
How long does fishless cycling take?
There is no dependable calendar deadline for every aquarium. Current manufacturer guidance varies: API Fishcare says a cycle can take 2–6 weeks; Seachem’s guide says 1–3 months; DrTim’s advertises less than one week for a specific protocol combining its live bacteria product and ammonium chloride. These are method-specific manufacturer statements, not independently validated averages or guarantees. Setup, water conditions, and the method used differ, so test results—not elapsed time—should determine readiness.

How to confirm the tank is ready for fish
Use a challenge dose: provide the ammonia amount specified by your chosen fishless-cycle protocol, then test at the interval it requires. DrTim’s method treats the tank as cycled when a full ammonia dose is processed overnight and both ammonia and nitrite are below its stated threshold. Follow that protocol’s units and threshold exactly; do not assume another product or test kit uses the same reporting basis.

API gives a different general indicator—zero ammonia and nitrite with nitrate present—in a guide primarily about cycling with fish in the tank. That observation is not equivalent to passing a fishless challenge-dose test. A nitrate reading by itself is also insufficient: it does not establish that ammonia and nitrite are being processed quickly enough.
After the chosen completion check passes, make any water change needed to bring water conditions in line with the needs of the fish you plan to keep. Add fish gradually and stock in a way appropriate to the aquarium, rather than adding the entire planned population at once.

Common problems that delay progress
Ammonia or nitrite is very high
More ammonia is not always better. Excessive concentrations can slow cycling. DrTim’s warning to keep either reading below 5 ppm applies to its stated protocol; it is not a universal threshold for all products or test formats. Follow the instructions for your method, and use a water change if that method calls for one.
Tests seem unchanged after adding fish food
Food must decompose before it releases ammonia, so a prompt test change is not guaranteed. Wait and test again on the schedule you are following rather than adding more immediately.

The cycle is taking longer than expected
A slow cycle alone does not show that the aquarium is broken. Keep the filter running, continue checking ammonia, nitrite, and pH, and consult the selected method’s troubleshooting directions. Recheck that the water was conditioned as directed and that the ammonia source and test units are being interpreted correctly.
The test result does not match the dose you expected
Check for ammonia already present in the source water or substrate, verify the product’s current directions, and note whether the kit reports nitrogen concentration, total ammonia, or an ion reading. Do not treat those units as equivalent or redose repeatedly to match an exact color-card value.
