Squid became a local celebrity because he readily approaches people, and neighbors began recognizing him by name. A profile by Katelynn Sobus, published by Cats.com on Aug. 27, 2026, recounts how the blind cat was adopted and how his owner describes their supervised outdoor outings.
How Squid met his adopter
Squid’s owner had gone to a shelter thinking she might adopt a dog. Instead, she looked at the cats. According to the Cats.com profile, Squid was asleep when she arrived, then perked up and approached her fearlessly. His owner recalled, “He immediately started just climbing all over me like a mountain.” She adopted him the next morning.

Why people in the neighborhood know him

She describes him as patient with children and says meeting him has helped some people who were unfamiliar with, or afraid of, cats feel more comfortable around them. Those are her observations about Squid, not a claim that every cat will respond similarly.

What the profile says about his blindness and navigating
The profile identifies Squid as blind. His owner says she was told to avoid moving furniture much and to keep him in a familiar home environment, but the article does not say who gave that advice or establish it as guidance for every blind cat.
His owner reports that he rarely runs into things, relies strongly on hearing and smell, and bobs his head as he moves around. She likens his navigation to having “radar” or bat-like sonar; that is her colorful description, not a measured account of how Squid navigates or a veterinary finding.

How his owner describes their outdoor outings
According to the profile, Squid’s owner first took him outside on her shoulder. As the outings became longer, she bought his first harness four months later. The article does not identify the harness’s brand or model.
This is an account of what Squid’s owner did, not a general recommendation for taking a blind cat outdoors. The profile warns that cats should not free-roam and that blindness can add danger outside. It does not provide a veterinary assessment of Squid or a step-by-step safety plan for other cats.
